ZURICH, Switzerland - Daewoo models in western Europe will be branded as Chevrolets starting in 2005, General Motors sources say.
GM Europe will announce the change at the Paris auto show in September.
"We cannot confirm this but cannot deny it either," says GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz.
Models produced by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. in Korea are branded Daewoo or Chevrolet in Europe, depending on the country.
In Croatia, Poland, Romania, Turkey and seven other countries, Daewoo models are sold as Chevrolets.
But in 16 other markets, including Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, they are branded Daewoo.
GM owns 44.6 percent of GM Daewoo.
In North America, models produced by GM Daewoo are branded as Chevrolets or Suzukis.
The Chevrolet Aveo is assembled by GM Daewoo.
The Daewoo automobile brand will survive only in Asia.
Large investments were made when the brand was introduced in Europe in 1995.
Insiders estimate that the German publicity campaign, for instance, cost about $62 million.
Last year GM Daewoo sold 113,386 vehicles in western Europe, up 20.0 percent from 2002.

This is very interesting news. The reason I find this interesting is because my first though after reading it was: so does that mean that GM is interested in bringing more Chevy's to be sold in Europe? If yes, that would be very, very interesting. That means we will see more global Chevys sold here and there, which is usually a good thing for us.
My second thought was: If GM wants to push more Chevys in Europe, what about Opel cars? It gets complicated there.
I am sure they have a plan though. No matter what it is, it's good.

A couple of Indian users have verified this on http://www.subaruforester.com
Strange, especially since Subaru has a world presence.
