Citroën C5 - - Source: The Car Connection

The big Citroen sedan for 2005 is laden with safety equipment and diesel options, two things that make French consumers snap to attention. The C5's safety gear includes a lane-departure system, which alerts drivers with a mild vibration in the seat frames if they drift out of their traffic lane above 80 km/h; a second-generation stability control system and a new kneebag for the driver. Front park assist, a speed limiter and xenon directional headlights make the C5 as fault-free as possible. When it comes to engines, the big C gets a lot of them: a pair of four-cylinders, 1.8 and 2.0 liters; a 210-hp 3.0-liter V-6; and three common-rail diesels with up to 138 hp. Six-speed automatic and manual gearboxes are offered as well.

Looks good. The front is very Benz CLS-esq, but it's done nicely here. The rear is scary though. Wonder what the interior's like...

From Edmunds...

Citroën will unveil a convertible concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show in September called the C5 Airscape. The drop top provides a hint about what the second-generation C5 sedan will look like.

Pronounced Citroën chevrons at the front, deep air intakes and a curvaceous roof line are notable features of the open-top prototype. The concept's front-end treatment and parts of the rear will appear on the next C5 sedan, which had originally been scheduled for a Frankfurt preview. The automatically folding top has a sunroof; the automaker has not announced any plans for a convertible C5 production model.

The C5 Airscape is powered by a direct-injection, particulate-filter-equipped 2.7-liter V6 diesel engine, capable of 208 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. Environmental consciousness gets a nod with the concept's UrbanHybrid system, which uses regenerative energy to power the air-conditioning and sound systems. The automaker says an advanced traction system provides four-wheel-drive-like handling.

There are no interior shots yet, but the company says Citroën 's hallmark steering wheel with fixed-center controls will be in there. Dark-brown leather upholstery will be joined by chrome accents.

S'more info from Top Gear...

Hair-raising Airscape

Another 'Air' concept from Citroen is to be unleashed upon the world at the forthcoming Frankfurt motor show, and this time it doesn't look so mental.

Following on from previous concepts like the Airdream and the Airlounge, the C5 Airscape is a big, luxury four-seat convertible.

It has a C6-aping concave rear screen, some neat styling touches and a carbon-fibre folding hard top that's supposed to look like a canvas cover. Interesting - you spend all that time making a hard top that folds, then try to make it look like a soft top.

There are also buttons covered in a thin 'membrane-like' covering (sounds like a condom to us), a new 'Urbanhybrid', um, hybrid system that regenerates power from the brakes to run the aircon and stop/start capability for the 208bhp 2.7HDi V6 running on biodiesel.

Keeping with the wordplay, there's also a new traction control system that Citroen is calling 'Snow Motion' (ahem) that apparently allows the Airscape to deliver performance levels equal to those of a four-wheel-drive car.

More to the point, this car isn't as crazy as it looks - Citroen's confidence is growing, and it shows.

Press release from Citroen...

Object of all desires

Citroën is unveiling C5 Airscape at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. This exceptional concept car is a new take on the most beautiful of vehicles, the cabriolet. C5 Airscape features powerful, dynamic exterior styling and an interior of exclusive design, made for driving pleasure and the comfort of three passengers. The original mechanism of the folding roof underlines the overall sophistication of design. Styled for maximum appeal, C5 Airscape also delivers maximum performance. New-generation Snow Motion traction control provides a level of traction close to that of a four-wheel drive. Other useful features are provided by the UrbanHybrid system. This unit prevents noise and vibration when the engine stops and boosts engine torque when needed. At the same time, it shows real respect for the environment.

An expression of power and elegance

C5 Airscape is a car to turn heads. Its elegant proportions and sleek bodywork convey a sense of performance with a promise of power. The innovative folding top is an invitation to climb on board and take to the road. The interior layout, with its premium materials, delivers the highest standards of on-board comfort for the driver and all the passengers

Power and sophistication

A car of elegant lines, C5 Airscape conveys an impression of strength and sophistication, with its cleanly drawn body lines and ribbing at the top. The powerful look of the body is brought out by the raw, intense grey of the bodywork. This colour, whose intensity varies according to the light, gives C5 Airscape an elegant and precious look, consolidating its status as an executive vehicle.

Through its assertive front end, featuring large air intakes and long incisive headlamps, C5 Airscape makes a statement of performance. The headlamps – positioned on the bonnet with its two pronounced ribs – flank the large chrome chevrons stating Citroën's identity.

The profile of C5 Airscape reflects efforts to achieve optimal aerodynamic design. The roof line, particularly large windows and tapering chrome-plated door handles underline the flowing lines of the body, while the high waistline, clearly marked wheel arches and 19-inch wheels clearly identify C5 Airscape as a vehicle of status.

The powerful design of the front and rear ends highlight the on-road stance of C5 Airscape. The high-positioned rear lights extend the waistline and optimise the vehicle's dynamic looks. At the same time, a double chrome tail pipe underlines the car's luxurious design as does the concave rear window, which clearly identifies C5 Airscape as belonging to the family of large Citroën saloons.

The sophistication of C5 Airscape can also be seen in the original design of the folding roof, whose glazed upper part lets light flood into the cabin. Made entirely of carbon, this roof opens and folds away simply, without detracting from the looks of the concept car. It folds away automatically, without assistance, and without the driver having to open the upper part of the roof storage area in the boot. C5 Airscape reflects the purest traditions in vehicle design in that the metal-look roof with its textile lining resembles a roof made of canvas – the emblematic signature of executive cabriolets.

Leisure and sophistication

Fully upholstered in dark brown leather, the cabin of C5 Airscape conveys an appealing impression of sophistication. The particularly well designed seats suggest luxury and precision. The central section of the seats brings to mind the links of a watch strap, while the decorative stitching on the edges of the seats reinforces the taut, well-muscled look of the whole. To add the finishing touch to the executive design of the interior, the gear lever knob is set with leather and chrome. The chrome echoes the metal strip underlining the air conditioning controls and central console.

The design of the driving position on C5 Airscape was also dictated by the pursuit of driving pleasure.
Refinement is the key word for the driver's surroundings, as reflected in the specific design of the
instruments and their layout.

The driving position features a fixed-centred controls steering wheel that brings the main comfort functions and driving aids (navigation, radio, cruise control and speed limiter, on-board computer) within easy reach. Considered as points of contact, the pushbuttons feature an original covering resembling the texture of skin. They create a strong, fast-reacting sensory interface between the vehicle and the driver.

The sophisticated design of the instrument cluster on C5 Airscape reflects the requirements of optimised ergonomics and ensures that information is laid out legibly. The three dials feature annular needles, symbolising an advanced level of technology. The needles run around rather than across the dial for greater legibility and a more attractive design. The air vents next to the dials underline this cabriolet's powerful character, as does the upper part of the instrument cluster, which takes the form of an air intake as on a competition car. The overall effect is enhanced by the clean, sculpted design of the dashboard. Its straight lines symbolise precision, while the soft curves symbolise dynamic performance.

This configuration contributes to full driver control and exceptional driveability.

Driving sensations and improved respect for the environment

Styled for maximum appeal, C5 Airscape also delivers maximum performance. This concept vehicle is equipped with a V6 HDi engine associated with a particulate filter and able to run on biodiesel, along with an innovative Snow Motion traction control system for a performance close to that of a four-wheel drive, and UrbanHybrid technology for low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. As a result, C5 Airscape boasts remarkable levels of performance that show real respect for the environment.

Technology serving the environment

Through its powerful engine, particulate filter and UrbanHybrid system, C5 Airscape illustrates Citroën's ability to reconcile vehicle performance with respect for the environment.

With its reversible alternator-starter and super-capacitors able to temporarily store large amounts of energy, the UrbanHybrid system delivers real benefits in terms of environmental protection, driving pleasure, acoustic comfort and vibration control.

In Drive mode, when this concept vehicle is travelling at under 6 kph and the driver's foot is on the brake pedal, the engine cuts out. For maximum driveability, it starts again instantly and automatically as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal. When the car is at a standstill, fuel consumption is zero and CO2 emissions are around 24 g over a combined cycle. Further, the onboard network (air conditioning, radio etc.) is powered by energy recovered during the deceleration and braking phases. This brings savings in fuel consumption and eliminates additional pollutant emissions. Engine torque can be temporarily boosted, when overtaking for example, for a high-speed take-off.

When the car is at a standstill, the UrbanHybrid system prevents noise and vibration in the cabin, for the comfort of both passengers and passers-by.

Driveability and performance in all circumstances

The executive positioning of C5 Airscape is reflected by the presence of the 208 bhp 2.7 V6 HDi engine and particulate filter.

Combining power and fuel economy, this engine develops 150 kW EEC (208 bhp DIN) at 4,000 rpm for torque of 440 Nm at 1,900 rpm. Right from the lowest speeds, it delivers smooth, gradual power with exceptional operating comfort. Driveability is further increased by a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

To deliver a high level of performance and improve active safety, C5 Airscape features Snow Motion, an innovative traction control system with extended functions. This system offers remarkable performance in terms of vehicle traction and "take-off" on surfaces with low grip, such as snow for example. The benefits, already significant with conventional tyres, are further increased when the concept car is shod with winter tyres. In this configuration, the performance of C5 Airscape is close to that of a four-wheel drive.

Taking the wheel of C5 Airscape is a total and continuous experience in driving pleasure. This is a car that brings leisure within easy reach.

Thumbs up Citroen C5 Released

Citroen C5 Sedan and Wagon Revealed
-----
Citroen has officially unveiled its C5 sedan at a press event held today. As expected, the C5 takes some of its design cues from the C5 Airscape Concept shown at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite being unveiled today, the car won't hit the market until its world debut at January's Brussels Motor Show.

When the C5 does go on sale next year, it will be available in sedan and wagon body styles. It still remains unclear if a convertible version will be available, but inside sources say Citroen is conducting market research for the viability of an up-scale drop top. If given the green light, the convertible could make it to market 12 months after the sedan and wagon.
Citroen debuted some of its newest technologies in the C5, such as a new traction control system, an engine start/stop feature and brake-energy regeneration.
Customers will be able to chose from a wide range of powertrains that includes three gasoline engines — two four-cylinders and a 3.0L V6 — and four diesels.

BTW, for those that haven't sat in a Peugeot before, their interiors are FIRST RATE.

Really, really nice for their respective classes.

I'd definitely look at a Peugeot if they were sold here.

I love profile of both the car and wagon. I also really like the rear's of both. The front fascia needs a slight tweek, though, IMO.

Citroen I think is the only company that has a steering wheel that has a fixed center hub - only the outer ring (the part your hands are on) turns. It's a bit weird till you get used to it. Only a couple of their models (like the C3) have it but this one doesn't look like it has that.

Citroen = French

Peugeot = French

Citroen & Peugeot = Cars

Both cars, both French...both vehicles we don't get to experience here in the states. I wouldn't say it's too random.

I think the French have the best designs outside of the luxury brands. The vehicles they have been releasing within the last few years have been beautiful. They need to get into the market here...

When Peugeot was sold here in the 80's, they were junk. But that was 20 years ago.

My buddy has been to Germany many times this year, he has driven the current equivalent to the C5. He says it is a very nice ride.

Though, we had a Peugeot wagon in England in '86 and I thought it was decent.

Peugeot and Citroen are part of sister company PSA.

About the C5, it takes queues from BMW's 3 series IMO.

Post 2014 Citroen C5 CrossTourer

Press release...

CITROËN is presenting an all-road version of the CITROËN C5, the C5 CrossTourer, at the Geneva Motor Show. The new model features all the strengths of the CITROËN C5, which has sold in over 530,000 units worldwide. With its assertive personality, Hydractive III+ suspension and Intelligent Traction Control, the CITROËN C5 CrossTourer scores high on wellbeing and cultivates the driving spirit.

The CITROËN C5 is known for its class-leading roadholding. That quality is further enhanced with a new version, the CITROËN C5 CrossTourer, readier than ever for what the road has to offer with its:

> All-road design, lending the new version an assertive personality with specially designed wing extensions, lengthwise matte grey roof bars and matching 18-inch diamond-effect alloy wheels in matte grey, along with chrome-finished wing mirror housings and brushed aluminium protective fairing on the front and rear bumpers. These style attributes are combined with 15-mm higher ground clearance (at up to 70 km/h for Hydractive III+ versions). The fresh and innovative styling makes taking to the road that much more enticing.

> Optimal comfort, adapting to all road types, in particular thanks to Hydractive III+ suspension. This automotive world-exclusive CITROËN technology manages body height in real time, keeping a constant ground clearance whatever the load. The system adapts the flexibility and damping settings in line with driver input and road surface for optimum comfort and handling under all circumstances. The body height is lowered at high speeds to reduce drag. At lower speeds, the C5 CrossTourer rides at two body heights – 6 cm up to 10 km/h and 4 cm up to 40 km/h – for improved clearance. The variable body height also makes loading easier by raising or lowering the load sill. Hydractive III+ suspension is available with all engine versions apart from the HDi 115 manual and the e-HDi 115 Airdream EGS6. Again for comfort, the CITROËN C5 CrossTourer is fit with a massaging driver’s seat with electric lumbar adjustment and full leather upholstery.

> Useful technologies for all circumstances, including Intelligent Traction Control, which improves traction on snow- or mud-covered roads, and the eMyWay navigation system combined with a reversing camera for easier manoeuvres.

The CITROËN C5 CrossTourer is available in two trim levels, Millenium and Exclusive, and powered by diesel engines ranging from 115 bhp to 200 bhp. The CITROËN C5 CrossTourer is available now starting at €31,950.
