Firepower Corvette fighter is still on Chrysler's agenda -- Source: Automotive News / January 16, 2006
The Chrysler group will decide the fate of its Corvette fighter in the second quarter of 2006, says CEO Tom LaSorda.
The sleek, two-passenger Chrysler Firepower concept was a star at the 2005 Detroit auto show.
"Firepower is on our agenda," LaSorda said. "It is something that will come to me, probably sometime in the second quarter. We're looking at a lot of business cases, and that is one of them."

Chrysler won't build Firepower
From Leftlanenews...
Chrysler will not build a production version of its 2005 Firepower concept, despite a positive reaction from enthusiasts. "We're not doing Firepower," Trevor Creed, senior vice president-design, told Ward's Auto. "We just couldn't find a viable way to do it."
One obstacle to the production was the fact that the Firepower was not designed to be built on an existing architecture, but instead was made from the ground up. Many fans had hoped the Firepower would become a less expensive counterpart to the Dodge Viper. In August, the U.K.'s Car Magazine claimed the Firepower was near approval. In May, the Canadian Auto Press reported the Firepower Concept was among Chrysler's top considerations.
Ward's also asked Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda if the automaker had decided on production of the Chrysler Imperial Concept. In November, product development chief Frank Klegon said a decision would come by the end of the year. LaSorda says the company won't make that deadline, but he made it clear production was still a serious consideration. "I like it," he said.

Eh... lame... honestly Chrysler could use it. It would bring more attention back to the American luxury brands. Road and Track would compare it to the Caddi XLR. Lincoln could jump in on the mix using... uh... uh... Road and Track would compare it to the Caddi XLR.
Besides I don't see why they can't just use the MB SL platform for this........ That car has been so whored out that it wouldn't hurt to just rebadge it and sell another 400,000 of them.

Lasorda can't give it a green light because he has until Valentine's Day 2007 to make the company profitable (or significantly reduce the US$1.5 billion loss from last quarter) or be pushed aside as CEO of North American production. Since the Firepower project doesn't guarantee profitability right now ... he can't approve it. Simple economics.
Ironic to see the only 'darling' of the domestics last year is now struggling not to lose any more money. They were way too ambitious with sales forecast last year and now they are struggling with too much inventory.
