BTW - the reason why the 300C gets such good mileage is due to its cylinder cutoff. When the car doesn't need all 8, it shuts down 4 of them to be more efficient. C&D said they couldn't tell if it ever kicked in or not because it was seemless.

Chrysler Considering Scion-Alike? - - - Source: The Car Connection
The Detroit News reports that DaimlerChrysler is looking at adding a Scion- or Smart-like brand to the Chrysler Group lineup, spinning it off of the Dodge, and/or Jeep brands. Possibly looking to the Far East for a partner to develop inexpensive vehicles in the sub-$15,000 range, Chrysler may decide by year's end whether to go along with the concept. Chrysler, according to the report, may already have three vehicles under development for the new brand, which could go to Jeep and Dodge if the separate distribution channel does not happen.

Preview: Chrysler 300C SRT-8 - - How much power is too much? - - By Paul A. Eisenstein - -Source: The Car Connection
The carmaker hoped to eke out a modest increase when it decided to bore out the Hemi to 6.1 liters. The results took even the most optimistic powertrain engineers by surprise, confides Dan Knott, director of SRT, the automaker's high-performance operations.
To get there, the new engine's block was strengthened, its bore increased 3.5 millimeters per cylinder. A new intake manifold and exhaust headers with individual tubes encased in a stainless steel shell helped improve breathing. Sodium-filled exhaust valves help improve heat dissipation. Compression was boosted from 9.6:1 to 10.3:1. The camshaft was tweaked, while peak engine speed was boosted 15 percent, to 6200 rpm. And the regular, 2.5-inch diameter exhaust system was increased to 2.75 inches.
The upgraded engine, which is being previewed in Pebble Beach this weekend, pumps the numbers up to 425 hp - 25 more than the new, sixth-generation Corvette, incidentally - and 420 lb-ft. "When we first went down the 6.1-liter path," admits Knott, "our targets were a lot lower." Not that he's complaining. The 6.1-liter version of the Hemi will help Chrysler dramatically differentiate the new 300C SRT-8 from the 5.7-liter version of the car.

So, it's that that honda isn't doing it. They are. I'd say they are better at it but they are just going about it in a different way. Easy to extract power from big engines more difficult from smaller engines.

Chrysler To Build New Mid-Sizers in Mich. - - Source: The Car Connection
The Chrysler Group is preparing to retool its Sterling Heights, Mich., plant to build a new generation of mid-size vehicles, per a report in Automotive News this week. The industry weekly says Chrysler will revamp the plant to allow flexible production of many different models, which will enable it to build a range of new vehicles to emerge over the next couple of years, including the production version of the Dodge Caliber concept from recent auto shows. The plant's chief duty, however, will be to build the replacements for the Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring sedans as well as the Chrysler Sebring convertible, beginning in time for the 2007 model year. The weekly says Chrysler will be able to build all the models at both Sterling Heights and in Belvidere, Ill., the plant where the Dodge Neon replacement is to be built for the 2006 model year.

2006 HEMI badges: Chrysler says "Super-size" them!
2006 HEMI badges: Chrysler says "Super-size" them!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the nearsighted, or those simply eying a Chrysler Group vehicle and uttering the classic question, “That thing got a HEMI®?” the company’s got some help coming: The Hemi badge is getting bigger.
The 2006 Dodge Magnum and Dodge Charger vehicles powered by the popular V-8 engine will wear a prominent new “HEMI” exterior badge roughly twice the size of the current emblem, Burke Brown, Chief Engineer for the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Dodge Charger, said.
The HEMI badges, Brown added, will be enlarged at the request of customers who say they’d like to make it a little easier for the world to know their vehicle is powered by the "hottest engine" in the business.

Chrysler Puts HEMI Badge On Steroids
Chrysler Puts HEMI Badge On Steroids - - Source: The Car Connection
Chrysler says the HEMI badge on its new vehicles is getting a boost. The company, riding a wave of booming HEMI sales-the HEMI engine accounts for 40 percent of the engines in many models, like the Chrysler 300C, says the size of the badge denoting the engine will grow by more than 100 percent. On sedans, it's getting 145 percent larger; on the Dodge Ram and Durango, it's growing by 136 percent. Chrysler says it's sold more than 500,000 HEMI engines since it was first introduced in the Dodge Ram pickup in 2003.
