Edmunds: Malibu Maxx gets axed
Edmunds: Malibu Maxx Is History
The five-door Malibu Maxx will be dropped when the new Epsilon models are redesigned beginning in 2008
DETROIT — Financially troubled General Motors will be relying heavily on its front-wheel-drive cars in the future, Inside Line has learned.
The bulk of GM's car sales volume in the future will come from front-wheel-drive platforms: the compact Delta (e.g., Saturn Ion); the midsize Epsilon (Chevrolet Malibu); and the new full-size Chi.
The Saturn Ion was the first North American car derived from Delta. It was followed by the Chevrolet Cobalt. The 2006 Chevrolet HHR, just now being introduced, is the third. A fourth, the Pontiac Pursuit, is for Canada only. The Delta cars will receive a face-lift in model-year 2008, with a full redesign not slated until after 2010, supplier sources told Inside Line.
The midsize Epsilon is GM's workhorse platform. In North America, it will underpin vehicles from six different brands by 2010, including replacements for the Buick LaCrosse, the Chevrolet Malibu, the Pontiac G6 and the Saab 9-3, as well as the new Cadillac BLS and the Saturn Aura, sources told Inside Line. When the Malibu sedan is redesigned, the five-door Maxx will be dropped.
GM also is developing a new full-size front-wheel-drive platform called Chi, though it has not yet been fully approved and funded. It would be the basis for proposed replacements for the Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS and Chevrolet Impala. The first models would not arrive until 2011 at the earliest.
What it means to you: GM will offer buyers a long menu of front-wheel-drive cars in the future. Whether it will have any customers at that point remains to be seen.

Just when they start making a few good rear-wheel platforms, they wind up scrapping them?
I was hoping they'd stick with the rear drive & eventually update the horrible exteriors...

But I've actually seen more (fugly!!) Malibu Maxx than regular Malibu sedans. Kinda surprised they'd drop the Maxx prior to the 2010 full model change.
GM usually drags things on and on and on and on -!

Think this 'RWD revolution' is absolutely overated. Think GM is doing the right thing by not trying to compete with Chrysler and instead competing with the best.

The sizzle in the Steak
I think it looks better.
It is still a poor design, but a better version of a poor design.

the malibu maxx is one of the highest rating in consumer guide
they praised the car's room and power and convinience, but just the styling is a little off thou, but it is a fair daily transport for a family

This facelift shows the huge crisis within GM's design centers. The vertical bar was a signature Chevy design for a couple of years now. They even put it in certain Opels. That's how global they wanted it to be. Now just a couple of years later we see them take it from one of the most mass produced vehicles they make. What does that tell you?
It's the same thing they just did with the employee discount program. The say or do one thing only to retract it soon after, no matter how much of a signature item they're talking about.
I mean, we're talking about obvious signs of mismanagement, zero coherence and anything negative one can think of on the lines of corporate misstep.

2013
An image of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu has been leaked ahead of the car’s official Web reveal pegged for the night of Monday the 18th by--believe it or not--GM’s own media website. The single image, showing the complete vehicle from the front, has since been removed so we’ll have to wait until next week's special online reveal for more details.
Nevertheless, we can ascertain from this single image, plus 2 previous official teasers, that the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will be quite the looker. A more streamlined body, sharper lines and a purposeful stance give the car a more premium look, which should bode well for its new global status.
That’s right. The new Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 countries on 6 continents.
There’s no word on whether the previous generation’s V-6 or hybrid powertrains will return but GM has stated in the past that its latest Malibu will feature a global family of fuel-efficient and powerful 4-cylinder engines, along with 6-speed transmissions.
Given the 2013 model-year designation, we don't expect to see the new Malibu on sale until sometime next year, with the current model filling in the gap until then. Expect full details via the live reveal on Monday, with the first public showings scheduled to take place at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show on April 19 and then at the 2011 New York Auto Show just a couple of days later.
Chevrolet fans on Facebook can watch the global premiere of the all-new Malibu live in the Malibu tab, while iPad and iPhone owners can watch the online reveal via a custom broadcast optimized for the personal mobile devices.

Chevy stylizing really has come back. And a four and six cylinder with a six-speed tranny.

Looks good but I don't get the point of a full reveal a year before its available. GM should take a page from Honda's playbook in this regard. Why risk hurting sales of what you currently have on the lot.

That's the GM way. see: Camaro concept shown 5 years before it's actually produced, relatively unchanged compared to how most concept cars turn out

i like it, the current one looks good except for the rear taillights which were such an afterthought.
this one seems to have everything looked at and redone.

Yup, add the Volt to that as well. But at least those cars had nothing in the showroom to hurt. The Cruze was the same story. We heard about these cars so far before they were actually available I was confused as to when they actually went on sale.
