263hp Equinox Sport coming for 2008
Chevrolet adds a little edge to its smallest SUV
Made-over compact will become more aggressive, could give brand an image boost.
Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News
General Motors Corp. on Wednesday showed off a sport version of its compact Equinox sport utility vehicle, expected to hit showrooms next summer.
The made-over Equinox will come equipped with a more powerful engine and six-speed automatic transmission, larger wheels and some cosmetic features designed to give the plucky vehicle a more aggressive look.
The original Equinox went on sale in mid-2004 with little fanfare and has been a solid seller for GM. But the SUV could use a boost with consumers. Sales this year are down 13 percent from year-ago levels, with 105,000 vehicles sold through November, according to Autodata Corp., a New Jersey company that tracks car and truck sales.
Giving car buyers a sport option, which Chevy has also done with vehicles such as the Impala, Cobalt and Malibu sedans, should help set the Equinox apart in the increasingly competitive market, Chevrolet Marketing Director Cheryl Catton said. About 1.6 million compact SUVs have been sold this year, she said, and the Equinox goes up against 23 other models.
"There's still a huge volume opportunity with the Equinox," Catton said.
She said the Equinox will compete with the Honda RAV4 and Mazda CX7 compact SUVs and also stacks up well against BMW's X3 luxury compact crossover in terms of engine power and options. Other U.S.-made compact SUVs include the Ford Escape and Jeep Liberty, both of which are outselling the Equinox so far this year.
The Equinox is gaining on Chevy's top-selling Trailblazer SUV. GM sold 58,000 more Trailblazers than Equinoxes through November of this year, down form 100,000 more during the same time last year
The sport features aren't likely to drive high-volume sales, but might help give the Equinox an image boost, said Brian Moody, road test editor with Edmunds.com. Compact SUVs have become sportier as the segment evolves, he said.
"This may just be more of an image building thing," Moody said. "This is something that looks different -- less like a family hauler and more like something a single person would drive. Everybody wants a minivan, but nobody wants to drive a minivan."
The 2008 Equinox will be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. GM is eliminating the roof rack to create a more streamlined appearance.
Buyers can still get the rack as an added option. Also unique to the sport will be 18-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, standard all-ebony trim and dual trapezoidal-shaped exhaust outlets in the rear.
GM says the Equinox sport will deliver 263-horsepower performance, compared with the 185-horsepower of the traditional Equinox, and hit the 0-60 mph benchmark in seven seconds.
Pricing has not been set, though Catton said the Equinox sport will likely go for about $10,000 less than the $38,000 BMW X3.

The Equinox with a powerful engine isn't enough to convince me. It's a so-so vehicle to begin with, having a superb engine isn't going to make up for it. And I really hate the huge headlights.

Do they really think would-be RX buyers are going to start flocking to Chevy dealers looking to save $11K? What's next? "Chevy Aveo, over $51,000 less than Lexus LS."

The sizzle in the Steak
2010 Chevrolet Equinox posts 32 mpg highway rating
General Motors has a rather lengthy history of making thirsty SUVs, but the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox promises to nudge the Detroit automaker onto a new path. Early estimates suggest the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox would achieve an EPA rating of 30 mpg highway, but GM’s newest crossover has shattered all expectations.
According to the EPA’s 2010 rating, the front-wheel drive Chevrolet Equinox is capable of 32 miles per gallon on the highway. That rating not only puts the Equinox on par with some compact cars, but exceeds the greenest SUV of the market – the Ford Escape Hybrid – by 1 mpg.
The Equinox is also good for 22 mpg in the city, averaging out to a very respectable 26 mpg combined. Adding all-wheel drive takes down the Equinox’s ratings to 20/29 mpg city/highway.
Those better-than-expected fuel economy ratings can be attributed to the Equinox’s economical drivetrain. Thanks to a six-speed transmission and 2.4L four-cylinder engine featuring direct-injection, the 2010 Equinox can return highway mileage on par with much smaller cars. The EPA has yet to rate the six-cylinder version of the Equinox, but early estimates suggest it will return 18/25 mpg city/highway.

It will be interesting to see what the numbers will be in the real world and then to see what this same drivetrain can do in a smaller/lighter sedan. DI+6AT is not a cheap drivetrain - so I'm not sure how far down the lineup they can afford to offer it.

The sizzle in the Steak
Plenty of cars have the window controls in the center console area.

Why?! I hate that in any car. It just makes so much more sense to have the window switch on the window armrest.

The 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel four in the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is officially rated at 39 mpg on the highway -- we're still waiting on city numbers. That puts it ahead of its next closest competitors: the 2017 Toyota RAV4 hybrid (30 mpg highway) and the Nissan Rogue hybrid (35 mpg highway).
Chevy threatened a diesel model back in 2016, and despite the bad taste consumers might have in their collective mouths from the VW diesel crisis, the Bowtie brand did it. The 2018 diesel Equinox delivers 137 hp and a stout 240 lb-ft of torque with the oil burner.
The 1.6-liter turbodiesel joins two other boosted engines for the Equinox SUV. A 1.5-liter puts down 170 hp, and the 2.0-liter makes 252 hp. Both of those engines hit about 30 mpg on the highway.
“It is very fun to drive, with torque on demand at all speeds,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president of Global Propulsion Systems. “In fact, the engine delivers 90 percent of peak torque between 1,500 and 3,250 rpm."

Interesting, wasn't aware GM was still doing the small diesels. Can't say that I've noticed any Cruze diesels rolling around.
#32
I have seen a couple. But personally I can't say I would be buying one. Something feels wrong about a GM diesel to me. On the other hand I would still purchase a VW diesel.

^ Maybe in wagon form, but I've heard/read that the sedan here loses a lot of trunk space for the DEF tank.
I don't necessarily have any problem with a GM diesel, but only have any experience with a Duramax in a 3/4 ton & up truck. Curious to see how the Colorado Duramax fares. Good to see some diesels coming along in non HD applications (Dodge EcoDiesel Ram, Ford diesel F150, Duramax Colorado)

The Cruze is trash. The thing drips with cheap.

The 1G Cruze wasn't bad with a 6MT, and was a massive improvement over the Cobalt, but it was really heavy for its size. Haven't been in the 2G or MMC, whichever it is currently.
