It looks great.
Problem is, rumors are swirling that won't exactly be an entry level car. Prices are said to be higher than the Cobalt (which will remain on sale alongside the Cruze, at least for a year or so) and could approach 30K fully loaded. So there may be a reason it looks so damn good.

Although there is widespread speculation that the Cruze will eventually replace the Cobalt, it still remains possible that both cars could coexist within GM’s lineup. In fact, Chevrolet’s North American head, Ed Peper, says the Cruze is actually intended to create a new segment that slots above the Cobalt but below the Malibu. Seeing the car in person confirms the Cruze could fill that hole in Chevy’s lineup as it is actually bigger than it looks in pictures.

This looks like a true competitor from GM, for once. Now people won't necessarily be settling for a GM as opposed to actually wanting to get one.
Looks like there may be hope for the American auto industry after all. Now if only they can make it through the sales slump that is being induced by the current state of the US economy...

The sizzle in the Steak
Production version revealed
To say that Chevrolet’s Cruze has been a long time coming is certainly an understatement. Unveiled in world market form over a year ago, the North American model is just finally set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.
The new Cruze is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with a choice of six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. The turbocharged engine puts out 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque and should be capable of up to 40 mpg on the highway, GM says. The 1.8-liter puts out 136 horsepower and 123 lb-ft. of torque.
The Cruze will be offered in three trim levels, LS, LT and LTZ, the latter two of which will come standard with the turbo motor.
Safety will be a priority in the new Cruze, GM says. Ten airbags will come as standard, including the rear seat side airbags and knee airbags. Stability control and ABS will be standard across the lineup, although rear disc brakes remain an option. The Cruze will come standard with 16-inch wheels, although 17 and 18 inchers will also be available.
Outside, the Cruze takes styling cues from the new Malibu, and promises to be a much sharper car than the current Cobalt. Chief designer Taewan Kim says that the new Cruze’s design is meant to be “bold, not evolutionary. We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world.”
The car hit the European market in March, but U.S. production at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, where the Cobalt is currently made will begin in June 2010.

Based on what was once called the Delta 2 platform, the all-new Cruze rides on GM’s Global Compact Vehicle Architecture. The primary engineering and development will come from GMDAT — General Motor’s Korean partner (although there has been strong input from the North American and European planning groups).

Nice to see small displacement turbo engines coming to NA.

I don't think I'd go that far. Still looks pretty nice to me inside and out for a lower level econo-sedan. The red one looks like a low/boring trim level. Some better wheels and a 6m/t would sure help.

Chevy Cruze Hatchback version coming soon
via http://www.cruzefest.com/forums
GM HOLDEN’S massive influence over the new generation of global small cars for General Motors will be demonstrated at the Paris motor show next month with the world premiere of the Cruze hatchback, Aveo compact car and Orlando people-mover – all of which Holden’s Melbourne design studio has had a significant, if not the leading, role in creating.
In the US and Europe overnight, General Motors issued photographs of the production version of the Chevrolet Orlando seven-seat compact people-mover, which will be unveiled in Paris exactly two years after the vehicle over which Australia had a major design influence was first presented as a concept at the Mondial de l’Automobile.
GM also revealed that the Orlando will be one of four world premieres to be presented in the French capital, and went on to confirm that in 2011 Chevrolet will launch the Australian-designed Cruze hatchback – which will be built here and sold as a Holden for our market – along with the Orlando, Aveo and an updated Captiva SUV complete with four new engines.
Holden would only say this week that it was too early to confirm the presence of the Cruze five-door at the Paris show, preferring to leave official announcements to Chevrolet.
However, overseas reports have said a Cruze hatchback will be a certain starter at the event and Holden director of external communications Emily Perry has also told GoAuto: “There will be some exciting news coming out of the Paris motor show and the Chevy reveals for the Australian market.”
The Orlando and the Cruze are built off the same Delta II platform, with the Cruze five-door entering production in Australia in the second half of next year as the local production source of the Cruze sedan also switches – in the first quarter – from South Korea to Adelaide. -- http://www.cruzefest.com/forums/show...aris-Auto-Show!

MotorTrend:
Last week, we told you GM was reportedly eying a hatchback version of its Chevrolet Cruze. Today, we finally have official photos of the show car, which will make its public debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show later this month.
In typical GM fashion, the Cruze hatchback shown in Paris is technically a show car, but is really little more than a gussied-up version of the upcoming production model. It's a safe bet that styling will remain unchanged, with the only likely styling changes applied to the blue headlights, LED fog lamps, and blue-painted brake calipers.
Chevrolet designed the Cruze hatchback to retain the same stance as its sedan sibling. To make that task simpler, it looks as though each body panel forward of the B-pillar is identical to the sedan -- and that's not a bad thing.
Aft of the B-pillar, the roofline mimics that of the sedan, but it subtly transforms into a rakish hatch. From the side, the Cruze hatchback looks extremely similar to its cousin, the Opel Astra four-door hatchback, also based on GM's Delta platform. The Cruze hatchback even carries over the roof spoiler-mounted, high-center brake light of the four-door Astra hatchback.
GM doesn't give any indication of what lies under the hood of the Cruze hatchback, but the sedan's European powertrains will likely carry over. This means buyers will have a selection of fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engines mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Although it's not the production car, the Cruze hatchback show car is an extremely good indication of what we can expect to see launch in Europe early in 2011. GM hopes to capitalize on the Cruze sedan's success across the continent with the hatch -- a safe bet, seeing as roughly 65 percent of all compacts sold in the market are hatchbacks.

Eco model rated at 28/42mpg!! Wow GM!!
http://www.autoblog.com/2010/11/11/2...2-mpg-highway/
General Motors has released official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, and the automaker's original target of 40 miles per gallon (highway) has been surpassed. The Cruze Eco is officially rated at 28/42 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission, making it the segment-leader in terms of efficiency.
To achieve this, the Eco uses GM's latest 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, rated at 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. On its own, the engine is efficient enough to deliver 24/36 mpg, but a host of aerodynamic changes and weight reductions on the Eco account for the extra bump in fuel economy. In addition to a lower front air dam extension, rear spoiler, lowered ride height and revised underbody panels, the Cruze Eco rides on lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-rolling-resistance tires. What's more, a front grille shutter has been developed to improve airflow at higher speeds, thus accounting for a 10 percent coefficient of drag over standard Cruze models.
The Cruze Eco is priced from $18,895 and hits dealerships in January of next year. For the full details, hit the jump for GM's press blast.

The drivetrain engineers at GM have been doing some good work - the mileage on this and the Equinox show that there's some good numbers to squeeze out of good ole gas engine. What's the rating with the AT?

God damn you SSFTSX, when I was reading about the lowered ride height and the improved drag coefficient, I couldn't help but be reminded of your ridiculous posts. You've poisoned my thoughts, you heathen!!!
Quite an impressive job they've done with the engine though.

Base 1.8l w auto = 22/35
1.4 t w/manual = 28/42 *requires Eco gearset
1.4t w/auto = 24/36
The poor old antiquated Civic with all the inferior Honda technology does:
1.8l w/manual = 26/34
1.8l w/auto = 25/36

Oh boy. Here we go.... the pot has been stirred, I guess I'll take the ladle now.
I don't think anyone is complaining about the Civic's fuel economy. At least I haven't found it by doing a quick scan of this and the Civic thread. The main rebuttal to "oh yeah, if Honda/Acura is so inferior then how come they're still competitive with [this]" is "if they can do more with less, imagine what they can do with more, and why don't they do more?"
The idea here is progress. I think GM still uses 4-speed autos and OHV V6s in the Impala. I'm all for their pushrod V8s but the V6 they have is just lacking as is the 4AT. But then you see them make the leap towards putting 6ATs in most, if not all of their new models. A small, turbocharged 4-cylinder to milk the most MPGs. A host of other huge improvements to their lineups. It's obvious that they're trying very hard to improve, whether or not their cars were mediocre before.
Not to say there was much inherently wrong with Honda's lineup, technical specs aside. I'm sure Honda has made hundreds or even thousands of changes to the Civic to improve it. But here in Auto News we're all about acronyms and abbreviations, like 1.4T, DCT/DSG, 6AT, RWD, V8, etc.
Still, I'd venture that its safe to say that the next Civic will probably get 40 MPG on the highway.

But the numbers don't lie, and I'm not impressed. I think its pretty obvious that the new Civic, with a guesstimated 15% improvement will probably be rated at about 28/41 or so ??? Not a whole lot better, but it will achieve those figures without having to resort to an eco model. As far as Americans have seemed to come with economy cars, its not quite far enough IMO.
But it looks great. And the new Focus looks even better.

That was uncalled for...
General Manager here at work just picked up a top of the line Cruze... I must admit it's MUCH nicer than I expected it to be. If you don't like the way the car looks in pictures, you have to see it in person to make your final judgement. Interior is pretty damn nice too.

+2 mpg
Good news for Chevrolet’s Cruze: the company’s compact car grows increasingly fuel efficient for 2012, even without the optional Eco package. General Motors’ online order guide reveals turbocharged models will inch ever closer to the big 4-0 mpg mark on the highway, thanks to a few small revisions.
As was the case for 2011, non-Eco-spec 2012 Cruze models (with the exception of the entry-level LS trim) are fitted with GM’s turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is mated only to a 6-speed automatic transmission. 2011 models are rated by the EPA at 24/36 mpg (city/highway), but thanks to new taller gearing in the transmission, Chevy was able to bump that last figure up by 2 MPG.
2 miles per gallon may not seem much, but it’s enough to change how the turbocharged Cruze ranks amongst its peers. When looking at compact cars without specialized fuel economy package, the Cruze’s highway ranking now rests within the top 4 spots, besting the Ford Focus but falling short of the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra.
Pricing for the 2012 Cruze has yet to be announced, but expect pricing to remain similar to the 2011 model. Pricing starts at $17,275 (destination included), but the 1LT model — the least expensive trim to receive the aforementioned turbocharged engine and the aforementioned economy bump — presently stickers for $19,175. Expect finalized figures to emerge later this year when 2012 models begin to roll into Chevy showrooms nationwide.
