100,000 Camaros a Year - - Lutz says GM must reach sales goal if concept is built - - By JAMIE LAREAU | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek

DETROIT -- Product chief Robert Lutz thinks General Motors can sell more than 100,000 units of the Chevrolet Camaro -- and says that's the number required for GM to build a production version of the concept unveiled at the Detroit auto show.

GM is doing "intense work" on engineering for a production version and analyzing the business case, Lutz, GM's vice chairman and global vice president of product development, said in an interview with Automotive News.

He added: "Is it an approved program? No."

In January, Lutz said he expected a decision on building the sporty coupe within six months. GM executives have strongly hinted they will build the Camaro.

Lutz says GM wouldn't consider building the car unless it could sell more than 100,000 a year. He says the Camaro, a car he describes as "a little bit off to the side" of mainstream segments, would draw new customers and promote GM's product quality.

The Camaro would be aimed at the Ford Mustang, which sold 160,975 units in the United States last year. In the peak years of muscle-car coupes, the Camaro sold 200,000-plus units.

The Camaro would be part of GM's coming lineup of midpriced to premium-priced cars on a new rear-drive architecture developed by Holden. North American production of those vehicles is expected in 2008 or 2009.

With cars like the Solstice and Sky out I think it's unlikely that GM can sell more than 100k of these a year. Just look at the problem they are having selling GTO's. The GTO isn't a bad car by any measure and its a bargain in the high performance, near luxury category. Even when these cars were discounted dramatically (down to the price point where they would hope to sell Camaros) they could scarcely sell any of them.

I love GTO's. It seems that people don't like the subtle look though. They want 400hp and everyone knowing it. I think what might hurt these guys is gas even though hwy in 6th is awesome but most think of V8 as gas guzzler no matter waht. The public isn't very edumacated.

SUVs still sell like crazy and they're horrible on gas. A Camaro buyer probably won't care as much as someone else might since they've got performance in mind.

But SUV's cater to wayyyy more people including women and are way more practical in utility to lug around kids and crap. Supersized SUV's like Excursions and Burbans have gone down on sales. Most need their car to do everything from picking up kids at soccer practice to getting giant things at Home Depot. Can't do either in a coupe.

Could they sell 100K cars a year??? How many Mustangs is Ford selling? I just can't see them selling this many.

To have a shot at this GM would have to:
1. Sell base models for under $17K and with a V8 for under $23K
2. Have plenty on hand to sell when they first come out so dealers won't drive up prices above MSRP
3. Have a quality product to sell

Even with all 3 I just don't know if they can pull it off.

160K last year... They actually can't make 'em fast enough. I think 2006 is sold out (and has been for about a month), and you have to wait on a 2007 model if you want to order one (and not buy what's on the lot). There's already talk of a redesigned mustang for 2009 to compete with the Challenger and Camaro...

The mustang's success is what is driving GM to put out a rwd v8 coupe... GM realizes they could have had similiar success, but now they are playing catchup...

There are alot of F-body fans out there that would buy a new Camaro, and alot of fat secretaries who will buy a v6 Camaro (which helps the bottom line). If it's retro enough, the babyboomers might buy into a new camaro deal too..

It's got to be priced right... Somewhere around where the Mustang (and soon to be discontinued) GTO...

If Ford sold 160K Mustangs last year than 100K Camaros is possible. 100K sounds like a lot - guess not.

I disagree.
You’d be surprised what I’ve gotten it the back of my Vette.
I drive it to work whenever the weather is nice and make regular trips to Sam’s Club, Home Depot & Lowes.
As long as it isn’t dirty or something that can spill, if it fits I put it in there.

One time at Sam’s Club there was one guy was loading his SUV nearby and he was amazed as I emptied my cart into the back.
He didn’t think all of it would fit, but it did with room to spare.

Camaro: More Than Meets The Eye

LeftLaneNews: "The Chevrolet Camaro Concept will star in the forthcoming “Transformers” movie, which is due for release on July 4th, 2007 (07-04-07). The film — which was first announced last year — is a collaboration between Paramount, DreamWorks, and Hasbro. Apparently, “Bumblebee” is going to start out as a 1970s Camaro, and then be rebuilt as a 2008/2009 Camaro. Meanwhile, “Starscream” is going to be an F-22 Raptor, and “Optimus Prime” is going to be a fire truck. Judging by the license plate on the new Camaro, tuner Saleen also has involvement with the project. A Saleen Mustang police car will also appear in the film. Full image gallery after the jump…"

I wonder why Bumblebee will start out as a 70's Camaro when the current design is so clearly more evocative of the original 1st gen-Camaro that came out in the late 60's.

Chevy Camaro a go, report says - - Source: Autoweek

Shortly after the Chevrolet Camaro concept hit the Detroit show floor to rave reviews, there was little doubt GM would eventually build the car. According to a newspaper report, the official announcement is now finally only days away.

The Detroit Free Press has reported that GM CEO Rick Wagoner will announce later this week at a conference in Traverse City, MI, that the Camaro concept will be built.

The Camaro concept is built the company’s Zeta rear-drive platform, which goes into production this summer in Australia.

This platform, with independent suspension all around (technically, the Camaro’s parts came from a Cadillac CTS) and robust parts for large and high-performance cars, was shelved for a while to save costs as GM struggled to bring its bottom line under control, but it is ready to go now.

With hardware in hand, the next phase of making a real-world Camaro happen has to do with finalizing a production design, developing a specification list that will generate the requisite sales numbers, setting up to stamp out body parts from sheetmetal. Vice chairman Bob Lutz says the magic number is 100,000 units, and others say that means a range of affordable pony cars.

The report goes on to say that the car will be built as early as 2008 and that a V6 will join two V8s as the powertrain offerings.

I would think they are going to use the LS2 and the smaller V8 from the Impala SS/Grand Prix even though it is gear through FWD currently.

I was thinking that as well. Maybe a 300-325ish hp V8 and then the LS2 for the Z28. Great news for American muscle car fans!

I think that Chevy will go all out with respect to power with the next Camaro and what we'll see will be slightly detuned versions of the LS2 and LS7 in it. Unless if next year, the C6 gets a slight bump in power from the LS2 and the year after that from the LS7, which is certainly possible.

Here is more rumored proof of the LS7:

News: Chevy Camaro a Go for 2008 - - Source: car and driver

GM’s Chevrolet division can’t sit idle as the retro Ford Mustang gobbles up sales, so it’s frantically readying its own muscle car with vintage styling cues.
BY JARED GALL
August 2006

We knew it all along, but now the news has leaked from within General Motors: Chevrolet’s answer to the original pony-car salvo is being reloaded and aimed at production as early as 2008, the Detroit Free Press has reported. The official announcement is expected to come from GM Chairman Rick Wagoner this Thursday in Traverse City, Michigan.

Sources report the car will be built on GM’s revived Zeta platform, originally intended for a series of full-size rear-wheel-drive cars but shelved last year after being deemed too expensive. Power for the resurrected Camaro will come from a base V-6 and two V-8’s, hopefully one of which will be bear the letters LS and a whole number greater than 6; Chevy’s current top production engine is the 505-hp LS7 found in the Corvette Z06.

No word yet on where the car might be built—indeed, official word that it is being built at all is still a few days away — but speculation is that GM’s plants in Oshawa, Ontario or Wilmington, Delaware, are strong possibilities.

The LS7 is too expensive IMO and I would think that Chevy would learn from the GTO that price is a huge factor in this segment.

^ Yeah but I dont think they will go cheap with this next Camaro. It will be more of a quality product than ever before. A 42K Camaro with an LS7 is possibly IMO.

Anything is possible after they get the volume V6 model right.

A 3.6LV6 CTS with a Camaro body for 25K (inflated for MY09) would be a pretty nice car.

Very true... as with most of their recent offerings, the quality of this car's gonna be solid. I can easily see an LS7 Camaro at that price.

With the mustang, the V6 is probably the biggest volume seller.....

GM better watch the pricing tho'... 25K for a v6 camaro is gonna be a hard sell when the v8 mustang is just a little more money...

A $42K Camaro would match up well with the Shelby, but the lesser v8 option is going to have to compete w/ a $27K Mustang GT...

With the Challenger coming out soon, it looks like Muscle Car Wars have started again... It's a good thing for the consumer, but with alot of competition, the car companies are going to have to price these things competively...

I'm sure some diehard bowtie fans will buy a new Camaro regardless of the price...

I don't know. I just hope GM knows that they priced the GTO out of the market and not make the same mistake twice. I think an LS7 equiped Camaro would be closer to 50K.

I wonder how much better the GTO is vs the Camaro or vice versa depending on which is priced more. I guess it'll be moot if they don't bring the GTO back.

I'm excited about the muscle car wars but with that BP Alaska news, gas is going up even more.

That's why I said this will be MY09 pricing - inflation will bring prices to that level - an 09 Mustang with V8 will be 30K by then. And of course in typical GM style the car will start out at something like 21K with nothing included that most people want.

Well, since we know that some Pontiac's will be getting this engine, then it is possible to see it in the Camaro, however I doubt we will see the DI version of this engine coming up. So we will have at least two different versions of the 3.6L DOHC throughout the GM lineup. Maybe more for cost reasons.

I dont think GM is expecting to make money off of an LS7ed Camaro. It will be a limited edition, like the Z06. They are not making money off of the Z06.
