The new Camaro SS runs the Nurburgring in 8:20? at first I was like WTF, that's slow... until I checked out other lap times in the same range.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordsch...test_lap_times

Beats out a Cayman S, E46 M3 and R32 GTR and is 7 seconds behind the V10 M5. Not bad after all! I've just been so used to hearing 7:29, 7:42 and 7:26 being thrown around so often.

I'd say thats pretty impressive for how much it weighs.

That's alot of hard plastic on the door panels

I'd like to see a little more chrome, or some other accent color.
It's a little monolithic with the color.

...but not a bad interior at all.

Jalopnik has an article comparing the production car to the original concept, with commentary by the designer. As I had suspected, the majority of the changes was to make the car more realistic with regulations and guidelines.

Post 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS

From Supercars...

Chevrolet have officially announced the specifications of their 2010 Chevrolet Camaro models. Two engines are on offer initially, a 3.6 litre V6 with direct petrol injection and a pushrod overhead valve 6.2 litre V8. A six speed manual or six speed automatic gearbox are available for both engine variants.

The retro-styled Camaro body measures 4836 mm in overall length, and sits on a 2852 mm wheelbase. This is slightly bigger overall than the original Camaro, which had an overall length of 4689 mm and a wheelbase measuring 2746 mm. A conventional front engine, rear drive platform is used.

The 3.6 litre V6 has a 94.0 mm bore and a 85.6 mm stroke for a displacement of 3564 cc. The 24 valves are operated by a dual overhead camshaft per bank, and fuel is delivered via a high pressure direct injection setup. Variable valve timing helps keep emissions lower and improve power. The engine features an 11.3 compression ratio. Power and torque for the 3.6 litre is said to be 300 bhp (224 kW) at 6000 rpm and 273 ftlb (370 Nm) at 5200 rpm. This engine is standard on the Camaro LS and LT models.

The 6.2 litre V8 has a bore of 103.25 mm and a stroke of 92.0 mm. Multiport indirect injection and a 10.7 compression ratio endows the Camaro SS with 422 bhp (315 kW) at 5000 rpm and 408 ftlb (553 Nm) of torque at 4500 rpm, for the manual version. The automatic makes do with Active Fuel Management, which allows the engine to run on just four cylinders in suitably undemanding circumstances, reducing consumption and emissions. This engine is known as the L99 and produces 400 bhp (298 kW) at 5000 rpm and 395 ftlb (535 Nm) at 4500 rpm.

A convertible Camaro is slated to join the lineup at some stage.

Something is wrong with the Jalopnik's statement of power figures. It says that the engine makes 422HP at 5000 rpm and 408 lb/ft of torque at 4500 rpm. That sounds off.

If this engine makes 408 lb/ft at 4500 rpm, that means it makes 349.6 HP at 4500 rpm. So that means it makes 72 HP more in just 500 rpm? Sounds off.

Your wrong. There is nothing wrong with the Jalopnik's power figures. It is very accurate.

I am guessing that when the LS3 is dynoed, we will see very different numbers than what's claimed. At least with respect to the rpm these peak hp and torque numbers appear.

Though at first glance the concept and production cars look very similar, I can't help but feel that something has been lost in translation. Maybe its the huge wheels on the concept but the production car just doesn't look as impressive to me...

IDK...car has great styling and performance, but i cannot overlook the fit/finish quality of GM interiors.

It is like a supermodel with STDs. I want it so badly, but i just cant bring myself to come to fruition.

I don't know if I've had a change of heart or what, but I think the interior looks dreadful. The exterior has also been compromised compared to the concept car, I give it 2.25 out of 4 stars lol.

Hold judgement until you see them in person. I think the Challenger looks really good in person and I wasn't impressed in the photos.

Still not overly impressed with the exterior; interior is as crappy as before.

Here's how I see the market:

Camaro: performance
Mustang: exterior
Challenger: exterior

Pretty sad that none of them can bring two plusses to the table.

the problem is, the Challenger stayed quite true to its concept origins. and I saw one the other day and was quite happy with how it looked. I can tell from these pics that the Camaro is not going to have "the look" the concept had. The concept had this mean aura about it that screamed "new retro Camaro". It was just right. I didn't expect the production model to look exactly the same, but I did expect it to look close. It does not.

Irregardless if close to the roots or not, the car might look great in person. I hear your concern of keeping it real. Sometimes we gotta move forward.

Its odd, when looking at them sid by side I can't really pinpoint any major differences, yet on the whole the production car is just missing that certain something that the concept had. I know they narrowed the production car considerably, maybe its the dimensions that are throwing it off??

yeap I feel the same way. It's not a huge difference, but it's enough of a difference to make it different.

I was thinking the same thing, the gauge cluster seems too cheesy. I don't like the angles of the gauges or the trim used around them.

Maybe it'll look better in person from the drivers seat, either way I had the same thoughts looking at the pictures.

To other comments; the Challenger is a nice looking car, but it's way too heavy. 425hp and it's still pretty slow. Not to mention the premium price to go with it.

Lets hope the new Camaro takes off where the other one left off.

Me too

Aside from the small vents in the corners of the front bumper, the headlights and fogs..... they look nearly the same. I think the problem is that GM put out the concept YEARS ago and finally here is the final product after tons of media (over)exposure, and now its as if the Camaro's actually been out for 5 years, thus it already looks aged.

Well, that's just how I feel... it still wows me, but it doesn't seem like a new car to me anymore.

I'm surprised it looks as close to the concept car as it does, I was expecting them to pull a Buick Envicta on us.

Latest Motor Trend drove one and even though it was still a test mule, they loved it. Nothing but praises. They said "Mustang? Nah. The new Camaro feels more akin to an American G37. And remember thus far our driving has been limited to the base V-6 version".

Car sounds promising. great ride and handling.

C&D loves it as well and praises the handling.

The V6 should be enough for most buyers. Unlike the Mustang and Challenger.

I'm not disappointed about the performance, but I am with how much it weighs. And it looks like 245/275 is looking pretty wide already for stock tire width. I saw an SS, same gen as mine, 315s in the back with a good looking Mexican chick driving it (and it was stick)

315s would look ridiculous on the new Camaro.

2010 Camaro options leaked

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is still several months away from showing up in dealer showrooms, but prospective buyers have something to tide them over before they take delivery. An enthusiast website leaked what is believed to be an accurate list of standard and optional equipment for each of the new Camaro’s trim levels.

Leaked by Camaro5.com, the options list reveals few surprises, though it does confirm that the V8 engine - expected to make up just a small portion of overall sales - will apparently only be available on the SS trim levels. GM has long been downplaying the V8’s power and the automaker is expected to heavily market the more efficient V6 versions. The RS appearance package will be available on all but the base LS variant.

the world is coming to an end

parking assist, auto dimming mirrors, HUD, heated leather seats, and remote start on a Camaro?!

The 09 TL doesn't even have some of the latter options available

Wow, nice standards/options. Pricing will be reasonable, I'm sure. Too bad it isn't the greatest looking car out there. Maybe it will grow on me.
