Cadillac: XT6 News

Cadillac’s future might be electric because the people at General Motors are seemingly out of ideas on what else to do with it, but it has to pay for that future somehow. For now, that means doubling down on the big crossovers and SUVs people are buying in droves. Key to that is this—the all-new 2020 Cadillac XT6, the biggest Cadillac luxury people-mover that isn’t an Escalade.

The XT6 was revealed on the internet late last night and will be Cadillac’s big debut of the Detroit Auto Show, which begins in earnest tomorrow. It joins the smaller XT4 and XT5 in rounding out Cadillac’s all-important crossover lineup—the brand suffered greatly as of late for being heavy on sedans at a time when nobody is buying those.

At 198.8 inches long, the XT6 is comparable to the Lexus RX350L and other large three-row crossovers. Visually it reminds me quite a bit of the Volvo XC90, although that’s not a bad place to be.

It’s powered by the familiar 3.6-liter V6 engine rated at 310 horsepower, comes with a nine-speed automatic and is available in front- or all-wheel drive. Underneath it’s on the same platform as the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave, but presumably with more luxury appointments and safety tech. Options here include adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, night vision and more.

Curiously, as Motor 1 pointed out, GM’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise system—as of yet seen only on the recently cancelled CT6—is not even mentioned in the initial release. Perhaps it’s coming later, or GM’s being extra conservative in its rollout of those technologies as people get wise to the fact that robot cars aren’t just two years away.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but I’d guess it will start in the mid- to upper- $40,000 range given the segment it’s in. We generally like the XT5 but found the XT4 to be quite wanting, and distinctly un-Cadillac-like, so hopefully the same missteps won’t be made here. Then again, if it makes money, who cares?

A handsome design up front, but the overall design is safe and underwhelming. I'm sure they'll sell plenty of them, but it's not nearly as striking as the Aviator. I had high hopes for this crossover.

Design is definitely very safe. My only real issue with it though is the headlights. They are not Cadillac style headlights to me. The used to much of the underlying Traverse platform on this.

This thing will print money for GM.

This car would be more appropriate if it said "GMC" on the front.

just like the traverse... i wish it was more escalade esque with a bolder front... but then who would buy an escalade...

They already have that, it says "Acadia" on the back.

I'm sure it's basically the same car. Remember when they got caught with their pants down doing badge engineering? Yeah...

I agree that the Aviator is the much nicer looking option, but I think I like this design language a bit more than the other Cadillac designs.

Actually, I really love the headlights. I know it may seem sacrilegious, but it's time for a clean, updated break. I think the vertical led daytime running lamps are a good compromise. The convoluted look of the CT6's headlamps wears me down.
