I don't know if using the same powertrain/platform would make the ELR a Volt clone - from the looks, no one would confuse the two. GM alreasy said they're cutting the number of platforms in half so platform whoring will just increase with each model change.

^ that's a bit unfair - that's like saying I won't buy a CR-V cuz it has a Civic platform. Platform whoring and parts bin engineering will be more common in the years ahead.

2011 Cadillac Converj ELR Concept
Press release...
The innovative Cadillac Converj Concept, a dramatic luxury coupe with extended-range electric vehicle technology, is moving forward as a production car that will be called the Cadillac ELR.
Development of the ELR is just underway, so details on performance, price and timing will be announced later.
The Cadillac ELR will feature an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It uses electricity as its primary source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the battery’s energy is low, the ELR seamlessly switches to extended-range mode to enable driving for hundreds of additional miles.
“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, vice president-Cadillac Marketing. “Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present – the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”
Cadillac selected the name ELR to indicate the car’s electric propulsion technology, in keeping with the brand’s 3-letter international model naming convention.
The Converj Concept sparked the idea of combining the desirability of a grand touring coupe with electrification, said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, Global Design.
“There’s no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive, forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2,” Welburn said.
Cadillac will reveal another new concept car on Thursday, Aug. 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Cadillac also recently announced it will add two new vehicles to its product lineup in 2012, the XTS large luxury sedan and an all-new luxury compact sedan codenamed ATS.

I agree it is gorgeous inside and outside.
But it is a status car and not in any way performance oriented.
But as EVs go, it is worth the money IMO because it doesn't loom like a futuristic Homer Simpson mobile.

Is this the "cool kids" Volt?

I'm really liking the Cadillac design. Love this car, but it'll probably be way too expensive to recoup any "plug-in" costs, but you can always say you are saving the world in luxury. lol.

looks great, when manufacturers can start offering cars that are styled this well with a similar drivetrain at or close to 25k... electric revolution

It will probably be closer to $60k now that details are out.
That would put it up against a Z4 3.5 and a Porsche Boxster S.
But it is not that kind of car. And I would rather have it than an IPL G37 convertible.

IndyCar driver Simona De Silvestro christened the first 2014 Cadillac ELR to roll off the line at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Michigan on Wednesday. The Volt-based electric-gas hybrid will go on sale next year. We assume De Silvestro is in town for the Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit, two races at Belle Isle scheduled for this weekend.
The ELR uses a 16.5-kilowatt-hour battery that offers electric travel for up to 35 miles. The 1.4-liter gasoline generator can power the battery to extend the range to 300 miles. Cadillac says total system output is 207 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The battery pack in the ELR weighs about 435 pounds, and charges in 4.5 hours on a 240-volt outlet, or 12 hours on a standard plug.
It has four modes: sport, touring, mountain and hold. Hold allows drivers to use the generator to save power for driving more conducive to electric power.
Pricing hasn't been announced, but the ELR is rumored to fall into the $60,000-$70,000 range.

The poblem for Cadillac and everyone else competing in the $60K+ EV or PHEV market is that folks will start to lean toward the front runner in the category - Tesla.

Cadillac has priced its new ELR extended-range electric coupe at more than twice the price of Chevrolet Volt sedan which uses the same basic powertrain. ELR will start at $75,995, including delivery fees.
ELR is General Motor's first vehicle to use the plug-in technology of its breakthrough Volt. Volt starts at $34,995 after a $5,000 price reduction earlier this year. ELR is even priced higher than the cheapest all-electric Tesla Model S, at $69,900.
"With the electric vehicle space growing ever more competitive, the $75,000 price point of the Cadillac ELR will be out of reach for most," says Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, in a statement. "Although mainstream buyers will likely shy away from the ELR, Tesla has established that there are buyers willing to shell out top dollar for an electric vehicle."
Like the Volt, it will be able to travel about 35 miles on battery power alone before its 1.4-liter, four-cylinder backup gas engine kicks in. For many drivers using the car for daily commuting, they will barely ever need to fill the car with gasoline.
Unlike Volt, ELR will come swaddled inside in wood and leather and equipped with a full suite of high-tech features, including Cadillac's advanced CUE infotainment system with a eight-inch, full-color touch screen; LED headlights and taillights; lane departure warning; forward collision alert; and the seat that vibrates if you're in danger of backing into another car.
"The ELR is a unique blend of dramatic design with electric vehicle technology capable of total range in excess of 300 miles," says Bob Ferguson, senior vice president for Cadillac, in a statement.
Cadillac points out that ELR's price will be mitigated by federal tax credits. The credits, up to $7,500, could potentially lower the price to $68,495.

This is some Aston Martin Cygnet-type of shit. That price is silly.

I'm the Firestarter
Ok so it's Tesla-priced but the Tesla goes 0-60 a lot faster and has WAY more space, 5 doors, and seats up to 7. We're talking a compact 4-seat hatchback here.

Just when you thought Acura was poorly managed...

*Looks at price*
But seriously, it's a nice looking car, but if Cadillac thinks that they can throw a new body style and some leather on a Volt and double the price, I want some of what they're smoking.
Cadillac had been on such a good streak lately too...

General Motors is offering Cadillac dealers a $5,000 incentive to offer test drives of its ELR plug-in hybrid, which has gotten off to a slow start since its launch 5 months ago.
GM is calling the offer the Demonstrator Allowance Program, and it is designed as a tactical move to help register more test drives, said Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell. He also said it probably will take awhile for widespread consumer awareness about the ELR.
“We want to do it because of the newness of the ELR,” Caldwell said. “It’s a different brand.”
GM also is offering up to $3,000 in customer discounts toward the lease or purchase price of an ELR, The Wall Street Journal reported last week.
The moves come as ELR inventories continue to grow. At the end of April, GM had 1,700 ELR coupe models in stock, which is a 725-day supply, according to the Automotive News Data Center.
Caldwell said GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which assembles the ELR, has had heavier production since the beginning of the year than it will in the summer or fall, which could be the explanation for the inventory backup.
Industry analysts have a different opinion. The ELR went on sale in late December starting at $75,995, including shipping. Analysts and dealers have criticized that price -- twice that of the Chevrolet Volt, which shares its powertrain with the ELR.
The ELR is the 2nd vehicle to get GM’s Voltec technology, which uses a 435-pound battery pack and 2 electric motors for an estimated electric range of about 35 miles. Once the charge is depleted, a gasoline-powered, 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder generator kicks on to power the drivetrain.
The Volt’s U.S. sales fell 7% through April compared with the year-earlier period, to 5,154 units.
The Demonstrator Allowance Program is part of a nationwide effort to get more dealers to back and support test drives, Caldwell said. He said Cadillac has had a lot of success with similar programs on the West Coast.
Dealers have until June 2 to designate ELRs as test vehicles. The program will pay $5,000 for each ELR assigned to the test fleet. Dealers with fewer than seven unused ELR models in stock may designate one for the demonstrator program, and those with more than seven ELRs in their inventory can designate two as test vehicles to qualify for $10,000 in payouts. Each vehicle must accumulate a minimum of 750 logged test drive miles.
On top of that, dealers can collect an additional $2,000 for every ELR sold in July and an extra $1,000 for every 1 sold in August.

The sizzle in the Steak
In the land of the crazy religious zealot green environmentalists where Tesla cars are a dime a dozen on the roads next to their Prius counterparts, I have yet to see an ELR in the wild.
