"Cadillac sent us an early-production 2005 CTS-V because its engineers have refined the rear end to lessen the wheel-hop problem. The situation is better but not yet solved."

Hmmm...

"Our test car cost $50,470 and it had manual, unheated cloth seats, an upgraded stereo that sounded like hell, and no navigation system. M3s equipped like the other two cars in this test cost between $55,000 and $57,000."

The ultimate CTS-V challenger is the BMW M5 sedan, but since the previous version of that car is gone and the new one won't be available for another year, we'll save that comparison for another day.

ok so they're comparing based on $$$ alone.... that makes a lot of sense.

Car and Driver had a comparison of the CTS-V, M3 and an M5. It beat out the M3 and came close but lost to the M5. I can't find the article though.

Interesting note " The lighter BMW managed a winning 12.8 mpg, but that could be because it got a bit raucous at high rpm, so we operated the engine more slowly overall than the other cars'."

If the M3 got so raucous when revved you would have thought that the Cadillac's engine was just as refined.

This actually made me laugh "If Cadillac engineers refine the next CTS-V with a (much) nicer interior, a Northstar engine, and a less truck-like transmission, they may have a true world beater on their hands. They're that close."

Automobile mag is the WORST.
I think they based the CTS-V vs the S4 and M3 as the regular CTS is against the 330 and A4 more so the 5 and A6 class. It's kind of a tweener, between the 2 sets of cars.

It says, the new car is not available yet. So there is a gap in the M5 department right now. Or a lag if you prefer. Makes total sense.

Last time I checked, the M3 had TWO DOORS.
Why are they comparing these cars ???

Because a 545i would be about 62k and a 330i ZHP would get smacked around.

We can guess that the next CTSV engine will be the one from the C6 Z06. And we know that, that engine will be about 427 cubic inches large and make about 500 HP. So what will that make a CTSV go like?

I think this example is the closest we have right now.

I didn't notice anything about wheel hop ... does that mean it's fixed by Caddy; that Mallet/Lingenfelter fixed it; or C&D just didn't mention it?

Hope cadillac understands that there should be more to this car than just power, should refine every little detail.

Definitely an improvement. It looks larger than the current model.

I hope the interior was improved.

Looks awesome! I love the design because it's cleaner than the current model yet unique. Unique is key because many cars these days are starting to look very similar

The interior design/materials will be the real test. I can't see the current exterior looks getting old any time soon.

Looking Bolder But Familiar

In our January issue, we caught a glimpse of the rear end of Cadillac's entry model for 2007, the CTS. Now we get to see its nose. While there is no doubt that this is the CTS, the egg-crate grille has wider spacing between bars to convey the idea of less refinement, and more substance. Headlights not only wrap up into the fenders, but sweep around to the sides for a more massive look. That macho stance is complemented by the seriously flared fenders. From this angle, the CTS, with its very short rear deck, almost looks more like a hatchback than a sedan. That rocker panel appliqué is new to the CTS as well.

Extremely shitty rendering job. Everything looks out of proportion... unless the next CTS comes in "toy car" trim only.

Somehow Caddy seems to be disconnected from the rest of GM. They put out good stuff while the rest of the GM line up is meh.

I don't like the looks of it. Instead of lining up with the STS and SRX in softening the edges and refining the Art & Science look, it remains too edgy with lines to severe, IMO. To close to the "old school" look of the XLR instead of the lasted models like the STS.

Looks like amateur night at PM.com, they should have just posted the caddy bls as the future direction of the CTS. The interior is what needs work at this point.

Cadillac CTS - - 3.6 V6 Sport Luxury Saloon 4 dr, £29850 - - Source: Autoexpress

Cadillac is back, and determined to start with a bang this time. No more mediocre American luxury barges, but a debut car that fires straight at the BMW 5-Series. The CTS was one of the first Cadillacs designed under the 'Art & Science' influence, and it shows with an extremely bold look packed with razor-edge lines and extreme profiles. It works best in lighter metallics, but may still be too extreme for some. The interior is far better built than most American cars, if still some way of Audi, and space is not as generous as you'd expect. Most rivals are roomier in the back and a Mondeo has a bigger boot. Equipment levels are lavish though, especially considering headline-grabbing pricing.

Two rather vocal V6 engines launch the range, a 2.8-litre and a 3.6-litre. The latter is preferable as it's torquier, has a real turn of pace and is nicer to listen to than the anodyne 2.8. Neither will crack 25mpg though. As for handling, Cadillac proudly boasts that the CTS was developed with European customers in mind. That's why it corners tidily, with the stiff structure giving it a sharp, agile feel considering its size. It's no 5-Series, and the ride is at times unsettled, but it's a fair effort and there's little cause for complaint. In all, a characterful car that is surprisingly competent to drive. But will it sell? Not in vast numbers until the brand is re-established, a dealer network is set up and diesel powerplants arrive. Rest assured though, Cadillac is working on all three.

+ Character, equipment, decent handling, bold styling

- Space, economy, styling too bold for some

The first CTS I ever saw looked so out of place chasing a BMW on the Autobahn.
