During today's Autoline Detroit Auto (TV) Show, three top journalists who have been exposed to a lot of new GM product were stating how amazing the next generation CTS looks. They said the same thing about the Malibu (2-3 years away currently) and certain Saturn products (not the Aura and Sky). They sounded extremely impressed with how much better new GM product looks from an exterior design standpoint.

I hope that the journalists opininons were on point. The rendering of the CTS in the pics above are not good, IMO. It's also good to hear that the Malibu might turn out good looking, seeing as how it's one of THE most critical products in GM's entire portfolio. Not surprised to hear about Saturn. All of their product will be bangin' in 5 years.

Road and Track mag is reporting that for 06 the CTSV will still be rated at 400 HP and 400 lb-ft but it will be equipped with the LS2 engine (from the C6). Apparently it's claimed that rear axle hop has been addressed and there are improvements with the 6 speed manual tranny.

A little work on the interior would help. I test drove a CTS this weekend and apart from the good quality leather the rest of the interior was junk for a $40K car. Honestly, a TSX has a better interior. The plastic Cadillac used for the doors looked like it came from an S10 pickup. :shakehead

I had one for a loaner for a month, and i thought that the caddy while different was a great interior. It fit the driver well, the layout was great materials were decent and it had a much NICER interior than the G35.

The CTS handles Great and is a very fun car to drive. It also is a great HWY cruiser

The 2.8 V6 6MT I test drove had one of the best tranny actions I've ever tested. What was wrong with it?

I like the STS. They should try to make it look more like the STS.

Considering what a hit the current CTS-V is it makes no sense to go to less horsepower and doing away with the MT.

And doesn't the 2006 (maybe 05 as well) CTS-V use the 6.0L LS2? You think R&T would have noticed.

The CTS-V actually hasn't been selling all that great, after the initial buzz........they sell but nothing to write home about.

Am I missing something? Where does it say that there will be no manual. As for the next gen CTS-V, I would think it will use the S/Ced Northstar or possibly the LS7.

Look at the caption to the right of the photo. "Tap shift auto in lieu of 6 speed manual"

Didn't catch that. I will believe it when the car comes into production. I don't think that Caddy would product the CTS-V without a manual option. Also, I think that this article's hp rating are wrong.

As long as the M3 and M5 come with manuals, the CTSV will also be coming with that option.

I like the rear end, as well as the side profile. Just hope they didn't mess the front up.

Wide-body Cadillac CTS-V could debut for 2007

By Ed Hellwig

Date posted: 02-16-2006

The current Cadillac CTS-V isn't the BMW M5 killer General Motors hoped it would be. With the introduction of the more powerful 2006 M5, the CTS-V is 100 hp off the mark. Add in its lame interior and its vague steering and the Caddy's $50,000 price doesn't look like such a bargain.

We know a full-blown redesign of the CTS is already a done deal, but our latest spy photos show a prototype that hints at the possibility of a midcycle upgrade for the CTS-V. Caught testing at GM's Milford proving grounds, this prototype wears extended bodywork from nose to tail similar to Cadillac's CTS-V racecars. We've seen CTS prototypes like this before circling the Nürburgring, but they rarely had the level of fit and finish visible on this test car. This prototype also has a standard set of rear exhaust pipes. On the racecar the pipes poke through the bodywork ahead of the rear wheels.

And it's not just the bodywork that looks suitable for production. Check out the wheels and tires. Instead of ultralightweight O-Z racing wheels and low-profile slicks, this prototype is riding on wheels with the same design as the current CTS-V. They're not exactly the same, however, as you can clearly see that these wheels have lots of offset to accommodate wider tires. The change isn't just functional, it emphasizes the car's rear-wheel-drive setup. It's a styling trick BMW has used for decades now; it's about time Cadillac caught up.

If this car does turn out to be an actual production model, there will be more than just wider bodywork and a new set of wheels and tires to talk about. We would expect nothing less than a serious suspension upgrade along with the installation of the 505-horsepower, 7.0-liter LS7 V8 from the latest Z06 Corvette. This would put the CTS-V right back into the same league as the 500-hp 2006 BMW M5 in terms of power and at least a little closer when it comes to handling and steering feel. Throw in an upgraded interior and the CTS-V would start looking like a bargain again.

The same interior and it's STILL a bargain.

It will have a 505hp LS7 in it and cost, what, $40k less than an M5?

It's still hard to rationalize buying one of these over a GTO which cost ~ 1/3 less.

Well, one's a sedan so that in and of itself makes it a different decision.

But in terms of performance, I can understand why you'd think that.

The GTO is basically being dumped at this point while the CTS-V is still going for close to MSRP. I would not want to buy a GTO knowing that it's so poorly received by the buying public that Pontiac has to cut the price by $10k to get them to sell.

I'm interested in bargains up to a point. The GTO is not a bargain at this point. I think it's a mess.

I think nostalgia is more important than practicality when it comes to cars like the GTO. The GTO lacks the nostalgic link to the past that people want and it will probably die a slow death once the Dodge Challenger and later the Chevrolet Camaro appear on the market.

^ Yeah. I saw the show, and I've seen the pics on another forum. The front totally blew me away... it looks awesome, IMO. Enough to almost reconsider the next G being a sure thing. When does the next CTS debut?

Interior looks vastly improved, though the pixelated pics don't show much detail. It looks like it has an Audi-ish flair to it, with a good mic of metal work here and there, wood and plastic. Now I do hope the quality of materials match Audi as well.

Front looks nice too. This might be the best interpretation of Caddy's Art & Science theme.

Cool. That's not far away at all. If the car is smiliar to the pics above (especially the interior), then it may be a car worth waitng for.
