No, I'm not offended. I have no alliance to any one brand. I just like cars and I'm always looking around...I just like to give credit to where I see that it's merited. I think GM is headed in the right direction...finally.

I was sad to see the Pontiac G8 go bye bye too.

I really look forward to seeing this car... It's a major step in Caddy getting the lineup it needs to compete with the majors.

Cadillac has announced today that it will launch two brand new models next year starting with the XTS full-size sedan in the spring of 2012 and the ATS compact sedan in the summer of that same year.

Along with that exciting announcement, the upmarket GM division also released this teaser image previewing the new ATS. Importantly, GM states that “ATS” is only a codename for the new car so we could see something else used by the time it arrives in showrooms.

However, for now, Cadillac states that its ATS will be rear-wheel drive and targeted at the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Eventually, coupe and convertible models could be launched to better align the ATS range with its intended rivals. A high-performance ATS-V model is a given, also.

Production of the ATS, which is likely to come onto the market as a 2013 model, will take place at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan, creating some 600 jobs in the process.

In terms of styling, the prototype confirms Cadillac’s designers are sticking with the brand’s ‘Art and Science’ design language, with plenty of influences from the CTS evident in this teaser. Under the sheet metal is believed to be GM’s brand new ‘Alpha’ platform, a compact rear-wheel drive design that’s expected to be used for the next-generation CTS and even the Chevrolet Camaro.

GM is also slated to reveal a new Cadillac concept, either a preview of the ATS or XTS at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, which kicks off later this month.

Following months of rumors and spy shots, General Motors has released the first teaser image of its upcoming Cadillac ATS sedan. The new ATS sedan will slot beneath the CTS in the Cadillac lineup, taking on vehicles like the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The ATS’ design is clearly inspired by the CTS sedan, highlighted by crisp lines and bulging wheel arches. An up-swept character line is visible near the car’s rocker panel with large wheels giving the car a planted look.

Up front, though, it appears as though the ATS was influenced by the XTS Concept. Unlike the CTS’ headlights, the ATS’s appear to flow more into the car’s fenders, giving a more swept-back look. XTS-like fog light opens also look to be a part of the ATS’s front-end treatment.

The ATS’ will ride on an all-new RWD-AWD architecture dubbed Alpha. Although GM CEO Dan Akerson labeled the architecture as Cadillac-specific, it is believed the Alpha platform will underpin the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro as well as a sporty sedan wearing the Bow Tie badge.

Like the larger CTS, the ATS will be available in sedan, coupe and wagon body styles, although the Euro-rival will also be available as a convertible.

The big news powertrain-wise is that the ATS will get a turbocharged four-cylinder. The entry-level ATS is slated to come equipped with a 270 horsepower version of GM’s turbocharged 2.0L engine, backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to those eight cogs, the 2.0 ATS should return 22/32mpg.

An up-level 3.6L model will also be available, boasting 330 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It too will be mated with an eight-speed gearbox, returning economy of 20/30mpg.

An ATS-V model is certainly possible, but it remains to be seen what engine what stuff between its fenders.

Currently, production of the ATS sedan is slated to start in July of 2012, followed by the coupe in July of 2013. All ATS models will be assembled at the automaker’s Lansing, Michigan, assembly plant. Expect pricing to start in the mid-$20,000 range.

The drivetrain sounds like the one in the Regal GS but with an 8 AT. Sounds promissing - just hope they can keep the weight down.

Yup it does ... And honestly as much as I like the Regal GS's body lines if the ATS has the same engine and RWD it's a no brainer (unless I can't get a 6MT in it).

^ hopefully, GM will allow for factory orders - that's the way to get a 6MT CTS since very few come that way on dealer lots.

2013 ATS confirmed for 2012 Detroit Auto Show

The ATS line should feature two engine options: a 3.6-liter V-6 with 330 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque on tap, as well as a 2.0-liter turbocharged mill with 270 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque on tap. Understandably, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder model should be the most fuel efficient of the bunch with an expected gas mileage of 22/32 mpg city/highway.
Can't get here soon enough!

I'm happy to see Caddy keep with the RWD platform for its sedan line up and not go the easy route (BLS FWD) at the low end.

Cadi naturally-aspirated 3.6L-V6 @ 330hp.

Wow, just wish that the Acura 3.7L-V6 (even 100cc larger) could have that many horsepowers.

The RWD powertrain alone makes this a compelling car. Plus look for a coupe and a V variant as well.

The new gen 3.5l V6 with DI will likely get close to that.

Autoblog says ATS will have a 270hp Turbo-4.

My guess is it's the Regal GS engine. The silhouette looks fantastic, I have a feeling it's going to end up being the car I wished the Regal GS was (as the Opel Insignia GTC).

^ some of that will depend on the weight of it - the Regal is already too heavy for the drivetrain.

Yup. The performance isn't terrible (mid-6s to 60) but the car is a heavy f'er.

That will be the base engine. The 3.6 will be 330 hp. Plus it will be RWD. Remember - Caddy is aiming for a 3 series competitor, so the chassis should be very good.

Let's hope not. If Caddy is copying the MB AMG way of things, I hope they stick in the 6.2L Supercharged ''detuned'' to 500-525HP, as the E63 and C63 shared the 6.2L V8. It seems that the ATS is already sharing a CTS engine.

That was not my understanding.
The 270 HP Turbo 4 = 328 competitor.
The 330 HP 3.6 v6 = 335 competitor.
The V variant should be in the 400HP range to compete with the M3.

Again....

Known and expected powertrain details
GM confirmed a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the base powerplant, an engine that will be shared with the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu . It is expected that the final power figures will fall in the 190 to 200 realm. This engine will give the ATS a low entry price point, along with optimal fuel economy, but be short on power compared to its German and Japanese rivals.

Next up will be the 2.0T, as Cadillac refers to it, loaded with technology such as: a direct-injection twin-cam, four valves per cylinder, continuously variable valve timing, twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler, forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system and a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling.

Worth noting, the 2.0T produces 90 percent of its peak 260 lb-ft of torque anywhere between 1,500 and 5,800 rpms – meaning the ATS will have torque on-demand, any time. Horsepower comes in at an aforementioned 270 ponies.

Third in the hierarchical tree will be the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 confirmed in the article above, which will deliver 330 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.

The final engine is not officially confirmed, but you can count on a V8 for the range-topping ATS-V. The leaked spec sheet suggested 470 horsepower and 438 lb-ft of torque.

The ATS’ will ride on an all-new RWD-AWD architecture dubbed Alpha.....

Like the larger CTS, the ATS will be available in sedan, coupe and wagon body styles...

Assuming that spec sheet is correct, I have to wonder what engine is in the ATS-V. Maybe a shorter stroke LS7 or something. Sounds enticing

I'm gonna seriously look very closely at this one. I hope the coupe isn't too far behind the release of the sedan. I think I like the smaller size of this compared to the CTS.

Lets go Caddy! Bring it on!

^ I like a mid-size car due to my size. But if I fit in this ATS, I may have found a G replacement in 2016ish.
