Veyron has issues...?

Well, looks like the car that's trying to set the new standard in the supercar class has some problems. Supposedly, the Bugatti Veyron has downforce issues for the speed it boasts about being able to reach (400km/h)...It is reported that if it's going to reach that speed, the car has to be rebuilt completely because the the vehicle's aerodynamics are not good enough...OUCH.

For those German speakers, this is the link with the story I think:

But, hey...I'd still take the defective car...I don't need it to go up to 400km/h!

Well, I wouldn't count Bugatti out for too long...I think they'll get their act together...what, with Volkswagen as the big bro watching and all...

I still think the Veyron will be able to set the benchmark...

No, I have not read or heard that before. It would be very interesting though.

VW's ownership of the Bugatti brand is not running as smoothly as it should. The will-they, won't-they? gestation of the Veyron took another turn at Frankfurt when it was revealed in - what should be - its final production form.

The main changes have been around the front wheelarches, where air-extraction ducts have been squeezed in, somewhat spoiling the overall shape. The car was due to have been launched to the press in August. Mysteriously, the reveal was cancelled. Bugatti boss K-H Neumann is soldiering on.

Only one Veyron

Contrary to reports in the European press and elsewhere, Bugatti officials insist there will be only one version of the EB Veyron 16.4—the one with the 987-hp, 8.0-liter W16 engine. Word was that tires for such a supercar, tires that could withstand a run of 252 mph until the tank ran dry, meant Bugatti would have to dial back the power. Not true, say company officials. “We are recommending that if you want to make a sustained run at top speed that you do it with a set of new tires,” said Bugatti president Karl-Heinz Neumann. That 252-mph top speed is still theoretical, however. The fastest anyone has driven a Veyron is 236 mph, during tests. One car crashed, because of “driver failure” at 217 mph. While that top-speed figure is as yet unproved, the horsepower figure is conservative—Neumann said the Veyron’s engine has hit 1200 hp on the dyno.

I mean think about it. 8 liters and 4 turbos (that's not to suggest that more turbos = more power - on the contrary actually - it has more to do with refined power...no lag, etc.). Here there are DSMs running 9s, even 4 years ago, making 650HP from 2 liters. Of course the Bugatti will make 1000 refined horses which is the real trick. But then again, that why it will sell for a million each or whatever the price will be. But 1200 HP from 8 well turbocharged liters is really not a huge accomplishement from an absolute numbers perspective.

Bugatti limiting top speed of delayed 16.4 Veyron

Bugatti limiting top speed of delayed 16.4 Veyron - - - By AUTOWEEK

Bugatti is planning to limit the top speed of its delayed 16.4 Veyron to 218 mph, according to sources close to the Volkswagen-owned company. The move follows long-standing rumors suggesting road-going prototypes of the 8.0-liter W16-powered two-seater had experienced stability problems at high speed.

The decision to knock 34 mph off the Bugatti’s top speed is said to be among a series of crucial changes instigated by new chairman Thomas Bscher. Despite reining in the top end, AutoWeek has learned that Bugatti will try for a world record for production cars later this year by pushing the Veyron to the 252-mph maximum originally quoted by former Bugatti boss Karl-Heinz Neumann back in 2000.

Car News briefs: Bugatti's Veyron delayed again; Bentley bidding - - - By AUTOWEEK

Veyron slower, and now later

On the heels of news that Bugatti plans to rein in the top speed of its 16.4 Veyron supercar to 218 mph (down from 252 mph) due to high-speed stability problems (AW, March 1), now comes word that we’ll have to wait even longer for the launch of the troubled two-seater. Originally planned for production in July 2003 and due to customers by this April, the 8.0-liter W16-powered car is now delayed for at least another 15 months before the first cars are in customer hands. Citing “demanding quality standards” imposed on the car by parent company Volkswagen, Bugatti officials confirmed at the Geneva motor show that the first example of the 987-hp car is not scheduled to roll from its assembly line in France until the second half of 2005.

well this cars been what, like 5 years in the making now and its still being delayed? it seems like the only thing going for this car is its speed, and theyre taking some of that away... not that anybodys gonna drive these things anyway, theyre just going to be garage queens. the interior is beautiful though, all supercars in this range should look like that inside.

"The most pointless excercise on the planet has got to be this four-wheel-drive 1000 horsepower Bugatti. I think it is incredibly childish this thing people have about just one element - top speed or standing kilometer 0-60. It's about as narrow minded as you can get as a car designer to pick on one element...That just reeks of a company who are paranoid." Gordon Murray (lead designer of the McLaren project)

In EVO, they tested the McLaren vs the new supercars and well, it was wiping the floor with them. This is a year ago maybe? Maybe 2 years ago. They intervied Gordan Murray about the SLR which was not out. He was bitching about how Mercedes was fucking the project up making it, well a Mercedes

He went into how the F-1 was a no compromised all around best drivers car bar-none. No turbos, no traction gizmos, no weight. He said, yeah, if you slap 20 turbos on something it will be faster but not BETTER. It was all about the driving experience. He then dissed the Bugatti.

He is right. No car can still surpass the F-1, a 10 year old car!

Well, in the recent CAR magazine, the comment was that it is even to be seen if the Veyron will ever go into production...

Another funny blurb written was how Bugatti would actually supply the owner with another set of tires if the latter was ever going to attempt the top speed...
