Bugatti caught testing dressed as Lambo

This dramatic-looking Lamborghini Diablo is being used by Bugatti to complete development of the quad turbocharged eight-litre W16 engine earmarked for the Veyron out next year.

The battle-scarred prototype, carrying registration plates from Bugatti’s engineering base in Braunschweig, Germany, has been extensively modified to carry the new quad-cam, 64-valve powerplant along with the seven-speed gearbox and four-wheel-drive hardware of the £693,000 Veyron supercar.

Substantial changes tothe Lamborghini’s bodywork are designed to replicate the airflow and ducting of the svelte new Bugatti, which is said to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2.9sec and hit 252mph flat out – figures which mean it would leapfrog the seminal McLaren F1 to make it the fastest road car in history.

Sources close to incoming Bugatti president Thomas Bscher say recent work on the Veyron has concentrated on an advanced new engine management system supplied by German specialist Bosch.

It is said to include unique programming designed to ensure the engine’s enormous 987bhp and 922lb ft of torque are ‘delivered in a way that will not scare the driver witless’.

Secrecy surrounds the new system, though it is thought to use algorithms that effectively quell any judicious use of the throttle by operating in tandem with the car’s stability control system. It instantly retards the ignition when the driver applies big jabs of the throttle that could unsettle the car.

‘The delivery is very important. It must be cultured and progressive, otherwise the torque could play havoc with the driveline,’ said our well-placed source.

Eyewitness reports say the massive Bugatti engine, which erupts though four oversized exhausts on this Diablo prototype, operates with all the aural intensity of a full-blown Le Mans racer.

J/P! I am in love with this car. Maybey they are planning on changing the look of it?

CLUofI 11-20-2003 10:42 AM

i hope they will allow people to disable the electronic controls on that. If i bought a car with almost 1000hp, i would want my awd burn outs and power slides.

NOVAwhiteTypeS 11-20-2003 11:00 AM

i think it looks better as a lambo body

Ashburner 11-20-2003 01:18 PM

Baby Bugatti planned

Mid-engine Baby Bugatti planned - - - By AUTOWEEK

And baby makes two
Bugatti is planning to sell a second model alongside its 987-hp, 8.0-liter W16-powered Veyron by 2008. In a move aimed at providing financial strength for the Volkswagen-owned company, the new car will be produced in far greater numbers and sold at a much lower price than the 50-a-year, $1.2 million Veyron. News reports indicate the secret new model is a mid-engine sports car that will sell for as little as $125,000 and would be produced in volumes of up to 2000 per year. Unlike the unique Veyron—whose launch has now been put back until mid-2005—the baby Bugatti shares a large percentage of its mechanicals with other VW Group models, including those from Lamborghini, Bentley and Audi.

They say it will be out by 2008....at this rate i doubt the veyron is gonna be out in 2008, so this is definitly one i have to see to beleve.

Baby Bugatti revealed by Autocar

Baby Bugatti revealed by Autocar -- - Source: Autocar

Bugatti has plans for a second model to sit below its forthcoming £800,000 Veyron hypercar... and you can ready about it exclusively in this week's Autocar. The £120,000 Ferrari 612-rival should appear by 2008, Richard Bremner reveals. It will be a practical car useable every day, in the mould of Porsche's 911, and could look like the car our artist's impression points to.

Specifically, its layout will be that of a mid-engined two-plus-two, reviving a breed of supercar that hasn't been around since the Ferrari Mondial finished production in 1994. Running on a unique platform, but with access to VW's extensive parts bin, it could ultimately end up with a twin-clutch DSG gearbox, a drivetrain borrowed from Lamborghini, and 500bhp - either from Audi's 4.2-litre V8 in turbocharged guise, or VW's W12 unit best known for its employment in Bentley's Continental GT.

gdubb 06-18-2004 02:30 PM

I understand why they are doing this?? They cant even get there flagship car together why are they starting new projects when they cant even finish another.

Baby Bugatti gets go-ahead - - Source: Autoexpress

Congratulations are in order, because there's a baby Bugatti on the way! The model doesn't have a name yet, but the famous horseshoe grille is set to feature on a new 'cut-price' supercar.

The distinctive emblem already adorns the world's fastest production model, the 252mph Veyron. However, it has an £830,000 price tag, while the new machine is expected to sell for £90,000.

Sources say it'll be named after a 17th century painter - so Vermeer, Caravaggio and Rembrandt are all possible. However, fans who are hoping for a junior version of the 16-cylinder Veyron monster look set to be disappointed. Unlike the 987bhp two-seater, the baby model is set to follow more traditional lines.

The entry-level Bugatti is expected to be a front-engined 2+2 using either a VW VR6 or V8 motor. And, as with the Veyron, it could boast all-wheel drive. It'll go head-to-head with Aston Mar-tin's DB9 and the Bentley Continental GT - and as Bugatti, like Bentley, is owned by the VW Group, it could even use the latter's platform to cut costs.

Engineers have already started work on the project. The final design is expec-ted to be signed off early next year, paving the way for a 2008 launch. However, development of the Veyron was plagued by problems, and bosses will be keen to avoid a repeat of that situation.

When production does eventually get underway, the car will be built at the brand's Molsheim factory in Alsace, France. Founder Ettore Bugatti established the firm in the town in 1909.

From Leftlanenews...

Considering the Bugatti Veyron costs seven figures — around $1.3 million in the United States — most folks have suspected the much-rumored ‘Baby Bugatti’ would probably cost between $100,000 and $200,000. However, AutoBild magazine is reporting that Volkswagen has much different plans for its second supercar brand. The new Bugatti will cost just 50,000 euros and have a four-cylinder turbo engine putting out between 280 and 320 horsepower. Most importantly, it will weigh just 2,444 pounds. That means it will spring to 62 mph in somewhere between four and five seconds. It will also have a top speed of 188 mph, according to the report. Clearly, the roadster will target the Porsche Boxster/Cayman and BMW Z4M. But with substantially less weight than those vehicles, it would be much quicker. The car is said to have development numbers BG913 (coupe) and BG914 (roadster). Between 5,000 and 6,000 units are to be made each year, with an introduction toward the end of the decade. Since the 2010 model year is a long ways off, we’d take these artist renderings with a grain of salt.

What's even more spectacular about this latest revelation is not the specs or the price. It's the projected output of only 5 or 6 thousand units. That's nothing, especially considering this supercar brand will have global appeal. If the numbers hold true, it'll be extremely exlclusive, depite the price. Will the "everyday" people who might be able to buy one still be squeezed out by the rich who make more than the car is worth in a day?

Who cares? Could you ever afford a true Bugatti?

I suppose if I was a Bugatti owner I'd be choked...but, since I'm not and will never be one, I'm all wooting it up for this. :2cents:

Well, in the event I'm ever able to afford a Veyron ( :wish: ), I'd be pissed if I was asked what I drove and said "A Bugatti" and someone overhears and says "Oh, my brother drives on of those to work everyday" or something similar. It cheapens the brand. Hence my dislike of the Gayardo.
