BMW: X7 News

According to Automotive News, the BMW X7 will be one of the significant announcements at the Spartanburg press event scheduled for March 28.

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported late yesterday that BMW will spend several hundred million dollars to expand the plant to build the three-row seven-seat X7.

Construction at the plant would boost production levels to 400,000 vehicles annually, says Automotive News. It is currently being expanded to build 350,000 a year.

After the X4 goes into production, the X7 will represent the fifth vehicle to be built at Spartanburg (joining the X3, X4, X5 ad X6). Roughly half of the X models currently built are exported to more than 130 countries.

I know they will, and they'll use it as justification for making a larger version of the X6 on the same platform.

Don't get me wrong, of BMW's most recent project announcements, this one makes the most logical sense by far, but they don't have to have a car to fill every niche they can think of.

Well they'll have more X models than the entire X-Men series.

Not surprised at all and about time.

The GL is a big seller for MB and has fat profit margins.

Yes, the Germans are going a bit crazy with all the body-styles but that, in the scheme of things, doesn't cost that much (compared to platforms and powertrains).

BMW Group Expands its Commitment in the USA

Commits US $1 Billion investment by 2016; Extends X family with new BMW X7; Increases plant capacity 50% up to 450,000 vehicles; Creates 800 new jobs; Starts production of the new BMW X4; Celebrates 20 years of production in the USA.

Spartanburg, South Carolina – March 28, 2014 1:00pm EDT/10:00am PDT…Celebrating 20 years of production in the USA, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW Group, today announced plans to invest US$ 1 billion in the company’s South Carolina plant: “We will expand the plant’s annual production capacity by 50% up to 450,000 vehicles by the end of 2016. Today’s capacity is around 300,000 vehicles. This investment will also create an additional 800 jobs, increasing the total workforce to 8,800 on site.”

At the event held at the plant, Dr. Reithofer was joined by U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker; South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley; BMW Group Board member for Production, Harald Krüger; and President of BMW Manufacturing, Plant Spartanburg, Manfred Erlacher.

BMW X7 to be built at Plant Spartanburg

The additional investment will be used to increase capacity, which is necessary to meet strong global demand for BMW X models. “Plant Spartanburg was built to enhance and expand the BMW line-up, underscoring the BMW Group commitment to the United States” said Dr. Norbert Reithofer. “In addition to the X3, X5, X6, and the new X4, we are today announcing another all-new, larger X model to be manufactured exclusively at this plant for our world markets: the X7.”

Harald Krüger, Board of Management member for Production explained the important role of the US for the BMW Group production strategy: “The BMW Group strives for a good balance of growth among all markets and continents. The Spartanburg plant is an important building block in our international network of 28 production and assembly facilities in 13 countries today and makes a vital contribution to profitable, globally-balanced growth.”

He continued: “Our US plant is the best example of our successful strategy of ‘production follows the market’. The state of South Carolina has supported us as a valuable and reliable partner throughout our 20-year involvement in the region – making the United States our second home.”

BMW Group in Spartanburg: largest U.S. automobile exporter

Norbert Reithofer: “We are expanding BMW Plant Spartanburg as our center of competence for production of BMW X models and broadening our product portfolio. This expansion means Spartanburg will have the largest production capacity of any plant in our global production network. This plant already exports, on average, 70% of its annual production with a 2013 value of more than US$ 7.5 billion which, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, makes BMW the largest U.S. vehicle exporter to non-NAFTA countries.”

Since production began 20 years ago, in 1994, the Spartanburg plant has produced over 2.6 million vehicles for BMW customers around the world. Currently the BMW X3, X5, X5 M, X6 and X6 M are all produced at the plant. The event also celebrated the start of production of the all-new BMW X4. In the near future, a plug-in hybrid version of the BMW X5 will also be produced here.

BMW Group economic impact on South Carolina

In addition to its large-scale capital investments, a new study just released by the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, reports that the BMW Group has a US$ 16.6 billion annual impact on the state economy. Its presence in South Carolina supports more than 30,000 jobs throughout the state.

The study found that for every job created at the BMW plant, an additional three jobs are created elsewhere in South Carolina through the economic multiplier effect.

“This is the fifth expansion since production began 20 years ago and represents another major investment,” said Manfred Erlacher, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing. “The increase in annual capacity, the number of models produced, and the number of jobs on site, reinforce the major role BMW is playing in the region’s economic vitality through technological innovation, environmental stewardship, and development of a highly skilled workforce.”

In 2013, a total of 297,326 vehicles were manufactured in Spartanburg, with 1,100 vehicles currently produced per working day. Total employment at the site reached 8,000 in March 2014.

They both look so mini-vanny. I don't have a prob with full size SUVs but I like the more upright stance of something like the Land Cruiser or Tahoe.

Never cared for the GL, especially the 1st gen , but if that's close to the production model, the X7 looks like a winner.

Yeah, and there are a lot of larger families who want size but don't want a minivan or station wagon. This is the land of GL, Q, Sequoia, Armada/QX, Yukon, etc. This is BMW's entry into that market - long-overdue, I would say -

BMW X7 Prototype Finally Emerges!

It's been nearly 3 years since the BMW X7 (G07) was officially announced to be coming, and although mules using other models have been spotted, no actual full body prototype has been spotted until now!

The X7 will be BMW's first true 3-row 7-passenger SUV. BMW has said that it will not just be an extended wheelbase X5 and will have its own identity. As for size, the prototype seen here is clearly much larger than the X5, with a longer rear door and roofline. The large glass moonroof looks to be panoramic and the huge front grille takes on a vertically stretched orientation like that seen recently on the next gen X5 prototype.

As the flagship SUV in BMW's lineup, the X7 will also be offered in an even higher luxury version. "We will make a higher luxury version of it as well. So in the same way as you take a 7 Series and you bring in the Individual bespoke service as with Rolls Royce," said Ian Robertson previously. This ultra luxurious version is expected to debut after the standard X7.

The BMW X7 will be revealed in 2018 and compete directly with the Mercedes GLS Class, Audi Q7 and Range Rover. When it comes to market in 2019, the U.S. will get x40i, x40d, and x50i models, while the rest of the world will also get the x30i and x30d (source).

Because nothing screams more "The Ultimate Driving Machine" than a Minivan

Kidding aside, as much sense as it makes to produce a Minivan, it would be a hard decision to make for both BMW and its buyers.

Does BMW really want to make a Minivan?
Do the buyers really want to spend $70k on a Minivan?

Is there much difference between this SUV and Minivan? Mind you the Odyssey looks more like a crossover than a minivan. BTW...the Odyssey is bigger than the M-B GL.

https://www.topgear.com/car-news/fra...ce-concept-suv

It's big. And it'll have the biggest interior of any BMW ever

Next year BMW promises to add to its crossover lineup not just with the small X2, but with the big X7.

And. We. Mean. Big. This thumping great concept car is its precursor. The Concept X7 iPerformance will be revealed from under several acres of silk cover at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. “It gives you a good idea of what the X7 will look like,” BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk tells TopGear.com.

The firm says it’s bigger inside than any BMW in the history of ever. Top Gear has spent time with it and it sure feels that way. It has three rows of two seats, though for production, says van Hooydonk, it will be had with other layouts including a more conventional two-row setup.

He emphasises that it’s not about the numbers of people, but their comfort. This is part of BMW’s serious effort to expand its luxury lineup. “It sits alongside the 7 Series,” he says.

Like a sumo wrestler in an orange overcoat, the exterior design does absolutely nothing to hide the bulk. Reckons van Hooydonk: “It has a luxurious and sophisticated feel to it, thanks to its understated use of forms and incredibly precise details.” Because the lines are so sparse, the distances between them are vast.

There’s a return to some design details from high-end BMWs of the past, including the upright grille and a set of slim headlights not unlike the 3000 Coupe’s. These combine to make the tall front end look even more brutally vertiginous. “It’s all about presence,” says AvH.

Vertical air breathers at the corners, says van Hooydonk, are meant to convey the aero cleverness and efficiency of this plug-in hybrid. They also happen to add to the lantern-jawed pugilistic visage. Along the sides, it’s the first X model to have round wheel-arch cuts. At the back, a metal strip between the lights is a visual link to the 7 Series.

The contouring of those surfaces as well as the reduction of linework are part of a subtly revised BMW design language. You can see it in BMW’s other 2017 design-for-production exercises too, the Z4 concept and 8 Series concept.

But those three concepts taken together also reinforce another point van Hooydonk makes, which is that in future individual BMW models will be easier to tell apart from each other.

As it’s a concept, you expect some sort of unfeasible pillar arrangement, and sure enough in this case it’s a Y-shaped truss structure bracing the perimeter of the glass roof aft of the row-two seats. It affords those passengers a sweeping panorama forwards and up.

The cabin design is all about visual reduction combined with lush materials. Pliable olive-bronze leather contains gold pigment. Open-pore ash and real aluminium accents, plus crystal glass switches, all up the material ante, but again remember this is a concept before you get too excited. Shell-backed lounge seats sit on slender rails, improving everyone’s foot space.

The wraparound driver post consists of two 12.3 inch displays, running almost together as in recent Mercedes. These two screens, and the ones for the rear passengers, integrate with BMW’s cloud-enabled Connected services. It’s all supposed to tightly integrate everyone on board’s digital life right into the car.

No details yet on the exact powertrain, other than that it’s said by BMW to have both a petrol engine and plug-in hybrid augmentation. The iPerformance name is also used on several other BMWs with the same idea. The 740e iPerformance can be had with four-wheel drive too, so that’s vey likely what’s going on here. But it will be interesting to see if this huge SUV gets by with the 740e’s four-cylinder engine, or if it needs a six.

The X7 is a major sign BMW wants a bigger slice of the world’s luxury-car pie. It must be distressing for BMW to see how well Mercedes does in shifting S-Class coupes and cabriolets, plus the SL and GLS enormo-SUV.

So the 8 Series Coupe will also fit that strategy, and the i8 Roadster will joining the existing i8 and 7 Series as the sort of aristo branch of the BMW family. They’ll get different marketing and positioning from the lower orders, and even their very own badge – a black-and-white version of the roundel, with the full wording of Bayerische Motoren Werke.
