Poor FX indeed, thanks for the link! Anyway this thing will sell pretty well, and it looks better than any other BMW crossover to date.

I think the 2nd gen FX lost some of the styling... It's too bulbous. The first one had simple but aggressive styling, it's still one of my faves.

Yea?

I love the new FX. I just think Infiniti did a poor job on marketing it.

Plus its pretty pricey.

^ But, wow...what a dayum drive. Especially, the V8.

Those who're passing it up for other CUVs are missing out.

So cute. omg.

The BMW X1 and the Mini Countryman are similar in several physical dimensions, as well as its intended owner demographic. Here is a size and photo comparison between the two BMW made SAVs. The X1 is longer and has a longer wheelbase while also having a larger cargo capacity.

BMW X1

Height - 60.8 inches (1545 mm)
Width - 70.8 inches (1798 mm)
Wheelbase - 108.6 inches (2760 mm)
Cargo capacity - 420 liters

Mini Countryman

Length - 161.3 inches (4097 mm)
Height - 61.5 inches (1561 mm)
Width - 70.4 inches (1789 mm)

That X1 is about the size of previous gen RAV4 - tho it won't cost anywhere near that, even with a cloth interior.

I hope it tops out at $40k, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

^ for the entry price of one, they really should. And HIDs too. it's not like you're getting it for cheap to not get leather. Don't they have fake leather for other base models, we're talking the seating surfaces too? You don't even get the real stuff.

The X1 is one of the ugliest car of the last 5 years.
Only the BMW GT is worse, maybe.

Official: US Gets BMW X1 - sDrive28i and xDrive35i Start at $31,545 and $39,345

Summary:

- X1 arrives in Fall, in LCI updated form
- sDrive28i (240hp, RWD, starts at $31,545)
- xDrive28i (240hp, AWD, starts at $33,245)
- xDrive35i (300hp, AWD, starts at $39,345)
- Will debut at 2012 NYIAS this week

The BMW X1: The U.S. Now Gets its First Sub-Compact Premium SAV.

The Globally Successful BMW X1 comes to the US in the Fall 2012.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 4th 2012.
Having demonstrated that it is the perfect blend sports sedan-like driving dynamics and SUV utility in markets around the world, the BMW X1 is setting out to conquer the US. The talented Sport Activity Vehicle of the premium compact segment will make its US market debut armed with state-of-the-art powertrain technology, innovative features, selective design modifications and extensive interior refinements. The new 2013 BMW X1 celebrates its US premiere at the New York International Auto Show and will arrive in authorized BMW Centers in the fall of 2012 starting at an MSRP of $31,545 (including $895 Destination and Handling).

The smallest BMW X model – produced at BMW Plant Leipzig – will take the leap across the pond with a renewed spring in its step, the result of a carefully judged honing of its core qualities. The design of the BMW X1 body now provides an even more intense expression of the vehicle’s muscular presence, contemporary allure and versatile sporting capability. Its interior includes newly designed surfaces, more polished controls and high-quality touches exuding the exclusive premium ambience of a compact BMW X model.

The BMW X1 has adopted a pioneering role among its premium class rivals in its current markets – and a repeat performance in the US is expected. Blending the versatility and robustness of a BMW X model with a high level of agility and compact exterior dimensions, the X1 has set new standards from the word go. Powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a broad spectrum of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies fitted as standard worldwide give the new BMW X1 the tools to further increase its lead over the competition in terms of sporting ability and efficiency.

Design: new touches to sharpen its contemporary looks and enhance its versatility and sporting flair.
Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW X1. A sweeping hood, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasize the vehicle’s dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and robustness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black edging at the lower edge of the body and wide wheel arches.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater intensity. A larger number of surfaces painted in body color highlight the vehicle’s enhanced elegance. The path of the vehicle’s lines, which converge on the license plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney and forge outwards in the lower section of the bumper, is borrowed from BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The newly designed headlights allow a detailed view of the advanced light technology within. And a chrome-coated accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights. Meanwhile, an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights – provides the classic BMW focused look.

The distinctive profile of the X1 is defined by a main character line that rises steadily to the rear of the vehicle while another line visually extends the contours of the side window surrounds as it flows towards the rear. The pronounced side skirts – that are a signature feature of BMW X models and the powerfully bulging wheel arches add sporting flair. Finally, the turn signal indicators are now integrated into the newly designed exterior mirrors.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of fascia, bumper and undertray, with the repositioned reflectors now also bordered by surfaces painted in body color. As a result, the black elements are slimmer, while the silver-colored undertray has a more striking surface structure.

Interior: precise lines, high-quality materials, sophisticated color scheme.
The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure, cutting-edge versatility and premium feel this vehicle provides. The side of the center console angled towards the driver is now shallower, spotlighting the driver-focused nature of the cockpit design.

High-quality electroplated trim surrounding for the gearshift lever and center console cupholders, a chrome strip for the headlight switch and chrome touches for the side edging of the Control Display – when the optional navigation system is specified – all add the finishing touches to the interior’s premium feel. Plus, the air vent surrounds are given a high-gloss black surface.

The BMW X1: more sporting and efficient than ever.
The variants of the BMW X1 offered in the US market will be powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo gas engines. This package of technology consists of twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. In both the award-winning 6-cylinder inline engine under the hood of the BMW X1 xDrive35i – developing 300 hp – and the 240 hp 4-cylinder engine powering the BMW X1 sDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i ensure instantaneous power delivery, impressive acceleration and exceptional efficiency.

Both engines are paired with an automatic gearbox and extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology. Features including the Auto Start-Stop function (28i only), Brake Energy Regeneration and demand-based operation of ancillary units all help to achieve a blend of performance and fuel economy unique in the market.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the US market. The intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW X1 xDrive35i and BMW X1 xDrive28i varies the distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels, as required. This electronically controlled power distribution ensures optimum traction and unbeatable directional stability in all weather and road conditions, as well as noticeably sportier responses through dynamically taken corners.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i, the X1 xDrive28i and the X1 xDrive35i will retail for $31,545, $33,245 and $39,345 respectively (including $895 Destination and Handling).

Yeah, drove the X1 a couple of times while we were shopping for the wife. Nice car...but, ultimately, she liked the "quirkiness" of the Countryman and the overall look.

2016 BMW X1 (F48) Rendering and Early Info

2016 BMW X1 (F48) Rendering and Early Info

Autobild get closer with new BMW X1 rendering.

In some markets, including the North American market. The F48 X1 is going to be xDrive only.

This rendering is very close indeed. The front is very similar, with a dynamic sweep of the headlights. A feature on the next generation 7er, 5er and new X7.

And although it is shown as the M Sport in this render. The front fascia aligns with the new X family signature but looks more sporty to appeal to younger customers. The rear incorporates typical BMW L-shaped units that wrap around the exterior X3-like.

The shape and character sculpture on the render conforms to what is hidden underneath camouflage and vacuumed plastic paneling on the current prototype.

The kicked-up hofmeister kick and rising glasshouse is carried over , highlight more by the dynamic sweep downwards of the roofline to highlight a more sportier profile than before.

The new X1 launches next Summer and will premiere at the 2015 IAA and launches early 2016. The X1 will be built in Leipzig , Shengyang and a new facility in Brazil. As a first for the Chinese market there will be an X1L a long wheelbase model for greater passenger comfort.

Engines will range from a three cylinder to a 300+PS four cylinder. Both petrol and diesel will be offered. A plug-in hybrid eDrive model will also be available.

The interior will offer greater leg room especially for rear passengers and a new dash that fits between the new X5 and Active Tourer with surfaces and layers.

One year later will be the next X family member - The BMW X2 available for the first time as a 3dr and 5dr.

Have you had the chance to look at one up close? I presume, if you purchased one, it wouldn't be a base model. But, that being said, the loaner one I had was terrible. There wasn't one option box checked on the thing, but that's no excuse (IMO) for being just a bad vehicle...it felt incredibly cheap. I was talking to my service adviser about the thing when I went to pick up my car. I stated, unless you care about RWD or the Roundel, there is no compelling reason to buy that car. You could get a loaded CRV for the same price and be better off. His response - They're terrible. They are a $30,000 Roundel that comes with a free car. His observation was that most of them are being purchased by people who just want to have a BMW, but don't really know they are getting ripped off.

I have driven one and would probably load it up with all the options.

I did drive a base model and was completely underwhelmed. Added a few options to another and it felt better.

Also considering a 328. I'll be honest, haven't thought much about leaving BMW for another brand. Suppose I could be persuaded...

I must admit, one of my biggest problems with where BMW is right now on some of its models is the harshness of that turbo 4 they are putting in the "28i" models. If that doesn't bother you, then you may be more open to certain models than I am...so take what I say with a grain of salt.

If you are considering the X1, I would also suggest you consider the MINI Countryman...just so that you can see what this platform is like in a different "body".

Just food for thought.

Oh yeah. Very much so. It is almost cosmetic. I would argue the MINI is slightly more agile but maybe that's a placebo effect...?

But, as we priced out both cars when shopping for my wife, they were remarkably close...so, it came down to the cosmetics and well, we felt the MINI looked better and given how the interior is laid out, more "fun".

I do think the X1 has a bit more space in the trunk though.

My problem is I still have a level of frugality when it comes to cars. To get into a 328, the way I want it, I'm looking at 50K. So to go to a 335, I'm well north of that.

Selfishly, I want to be lower than 50K. There's just something about spending that much on a car that isn't all that appealing to me.

Also been looking for "slightly" used, too...

So is it over to Lexis and an IS? Infiniti. TL???

I hear you. BMWs are grossly overpriced; that's why I've only bought them used.
