Mercedes-Benz: Recall News

Mercedes Recall Brakes the Bank - - Sensotronic issue to prompt massive worldwide recall of several models. - - by Mac Gordon - - Source: The Car Connection

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to conduct the biggest product recall in its history - a development compounding its recent rash of quality problems. The recall is particularly sensitive for the revered automaker because it involves the Sensotronic advanced braking system that the German automaker introduced three years ago on E-Class and SL cars as a failsafe advancement "nothing short of a revolution." A total of 680,000 Mercedes cars are being recalled worldwide, of which about 180,000 are in the U.S., according to the Wall Street Journal last week. The system's hydraulic tank can develop bubbles that cause braking failure, says the automaker, however no complaints have come from the U.S.

Developed by Robert Bosch GmbH at a cost of $150 million over a six-year period, the electronic brakes system relies on microchips to determine when emergency stopping is underway. The high-pressure hydraulic reservoir that backs up the electronic devices applies maximum braking instantaneously. In the Sensotronic technology, electronics vary the braking force on each wheel. Microchips note the car's speed and direction when the driver's foot leaves the accelerator. As soon as the driver's foot hits the brake pedal, braking force is applied most forcefully to the front outer wheel and then to the rear inner wheel.

A spokesman for Mercedes-Benz, Johannes Reifenrath, said that while the automaker plans to keep Sensotronic on E-Class, SL-Class, Maybach, and SLR McLaren cars, the system is very costly and other systems may be studied as possible replacements. Mercedes said that most complaints came from drivers of high-use vehicles, such as taxis. Mercedes has encountered a number of quality setbacks in recent years. Its reliability score on J.D. Power surveys rose to 318 problems per 100 vehicles last year for 2000-model-year vehicles and early in May stood at 108 problems in the first 90 days of ownership of 2004 vehicles. The brake recall could cost Mercedes about $30 million, Reifenrath said.

Mercedes-Benz Recalls 1.3 Million Cars

Mercedes-Benz Recalls 1.3 Million Cars - - Source: The Car Connection

The largest single recall in its history will be launched soon by Mercedes-Benz, just as the company is trying to right quality problems that have dragged down its performance. DaimlerChrysler says it will recall about 1.3 million vehicles because of problems with voltage regulators, battery-control software, and braking systems. The recall includes Benz vehicles outfitted with gas V-6 and V-8 engines, manufactured between June 2001 and November 2004, according to wire reports, as well as some E-Class and CLS-Class cars built between January 2002 and January of this year, and E-Class, CLS-Class, and SL-Class cars built from June 2001 through January 2005. Several hundred thousand vehicles sold in the U.S. are included in the recall; a spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that no accidents, nor any injuries, had resulted from the problems.

Mercedes-Benz recalls 1.3 million cars to fix power supply - - Source: Automotive News

FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz is recalling 1.3 million cars of several model ranges worldwide to fix problems with alternators and batteries, it said in a statement on Thursday.

On vehicles with six and eight-cylinder gasoline engines built between June 2001 and Nov. 2004, the voltage regulator in the alternator is being checked and if necessary replaced, the automaker said.

On E-class and CLS-class models made from January 2002 to January 2005, new battery control software is to be installed. In addition the braking system on the current E-class, SL-class and CLS-class models made since June 2001 are also to be updated, it said.

You see, this is an opportune time for GM to strike; while the iron's hot. MB continues to falter, both here and abroad (BMW's sales have surpassed them in Europe). Vehicles like the ULS coupe would be great daggers in MB's heart. I hope they make it. GM could potentially steal even more sales if there so called other "luxury" divison (Buick) would get their act together with the right product and design.

Yep, my dad just got a call on his SL a few days ago that they were coming to pick it up.
They desperately need to fix this trend.

Wow, that sucks. Isn't great news when a company like this has quality problems.

Daimler warns car owners of fire risk, says it lacks the parts needed for a fix

Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz has informed owners of its luxury cars of a technical defect that could spark a fire, the company said on Tuesday, adding a recall was not possible because parts needed to fix the problem are not available.

The issue was traced to possible leakage in the coolant pump that could heat up components, Daimler said.

The news was first reported by the mass-selling Bild newspaper, which published a copy of a letter Daimler sent to some 800,000 Mercedes-Benz owners affected by the defect that said “the risk of a fire could not be ruled out.”

Daimler confirmed the letter was authentic.

It added in the letter that the parts needed to fix the problem were not immediately available so a recall was not possible at the moment, but would be launched as soon as the components became available.

In the meantime the affected vehicle should be driven in a particularly prudent manner and usage reduced to the bare minimum,” the letter said.

Daimler could not confirm Bild’s report that 800,000 vehicles were affected.

“The owner of a vehicle affected by a recall should always contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz service partner immediately,” the company said in a statement.

The affected models are certain GLE/GLS (167 platform), C-Class (205 platform), E-Class (213 platform), S-Class (222 platform), S-Class (223 platform), E-Class Coupe/Convertible (238 platform), GLC (253 platform), CLS (257 platform) and G-Class (463 platform), Daimler said.

Mercedes-Benz is now asking the owners of nearly 1 million vehicles worldwide to park their SUVs and minivans due to the potential for brake failure brought on by corrosion of brake booster components. Mercedes-Benz and NHTSA have issued "do not drive" notices for these models, instructing owners to park them until the issue can be resolved.

The manufacturer announced last month that the campaign covers nearly 300,000 examples of its popular 2006-2012 ML-Class and GL-Class SUVs, as well as the now-discontinued R-Class minivan. Worldwide, the recall population includes 993,407 individual vehicles built for the 2004-2015 model years, the Guardian reports.

According to Mercedes, these models shipped with brake boosters that can become corroded after prolonged exposure to moisture. Corrosion can cause degradation of internal components of the brake booster, forming fractures that can allow air into the baking system and reduce braking effectiveness. If enough physical stress is placed on the booster hardware, a catastrophic failure may occur, leading to a complete loss of braking power.

Mercedes says early signs of failure include a soft brake pedal or audible signs of air in the braking system (sucking, hissing or wheezing noises from the pedal are potential indicators of contaminated brake fluid). Mercedes says drivers should park these vehicles until they can be inspected by an authorized dealership. Notices were sent out to owners starting May 12.
