BMW: Development and Technology News

From AutoExpress:

Engineers at BMW are developing a 3.5-litre performance version of the 1-Series, the firm's forthcoming small family car.

Although the newcomer won't wear M-badges, as other sports models do, it will rival the 3.2-litre Audi A3 and Volvo S40R, featured in last week's issue.

With a choice of manual and semi-auto SMG gearboxes, the hot model will arrive early in 2005. The entry-level 1-Series is due in the UK late next year, powered by a new 115bhp 1.6-litre valvetronic engine.

Reminder: The 3.2 liter V6 in the Audi/VW cars makes about 240HP-250HP.

I have posted elsewhere as a rumor that BMW's 3.5 liter engine is of uncertain configuration currently, although most clues lean towards a V6 design and it will make around 275HP when installed on a 3 series car.

Where did the rumors come from? I can almost gaurantee it will be an inline engine. BMW favors inlines for their smoothness and nice tq band.

And where does that guarantee come from?

As I said, they are rumors. It could be an I6. Personally, I am guessing it will be a V6. We'll see.

Actually, the chief designer must know what engines are available (or upcoming) so that he designs accordingly. The chief designer has to know of ALL hardware available to "him" for the design to be realistic. So, Bangle might not be calling the shots on the configuration of the engine, but he has to know what makes engineering and economic sense before hand.

BMW Registered Denotations **3.5L engine, V12 5-Series, V12 6-Series, 3.5L 1-Series**

Here is what Bayerische Motoren Werke AG has registered as far as vehicle denotations:

H 7 = Only for Germany

225, 230, 425, 430, 435, 650, 660 = Only for the USA!

125, 130 = Only for the USA

560 = EU and the USA

135 = Germany only

My guess:

H 7 = This sounds like a big vehicle not slated for the USA yet. Probably a van, or minivan.

225, 230 = 3 and 2.5 liter 2-Series cars. No big deal, pretty much expected.

425, 430 = same as above. So we now know the 2 and the 4 Series will carry on with the 3 liter engine. But I am guessing it will be a revised 3 liter engine. Possibly with direct injection.

435 = Now that's very revealing. Further proof of the rumored 3.5 liter V6?

650 = This is very surprising. Could this be the engine from the current M5 car with the 400HP?

660 = This is also very surprising. I am guessing this is the engine from the V12 7 series car.

125, 130 = No big deal here. Expected.

560 = So the V12 will be going into the new 5 series? Wow!

135 = This actually was rumored, by Autoexpress I believe. It is supposed to be the answer from BMW to the R32 and S3 from VW and Audi. But why registered in Germany only?!?

Lots of surpirses above....

So the 1 series will have the 225hp 3.0 from the 3 series? That's going to be one quick little car.

Good question. Maybe they're looking to add the V12 for variety purposes, maybe, this is a 6 liter V8 engine coming out many years from now. Who knows what's going on.

Maybe. Though I am hearing stronger and stronger rumors about direct injection applied on all their engines. Audi will do it before them so they are running to be competitive.

Yeah, but that's only for the S, CL, and SL classes. Not the E-class. That'd be wild to put the V12 in the 5-Series.

Wow. Hydrogen? That's an interesting fuel source. I like the fact that alot of the automakers are making real efforts to improve fuel efficiency or use an alternative source.

In the new Science Center of Montreal, the BMW Group showed the international delegates and Canadian guests its automobile concepts for the future: the BMW 745h as a prototype for the coming 7 Series with hydrogen engine, and the MINI Cooper Hydrogen Package Study.

I like the idea of BMW adding a 3.5L V6 to its 3- and 4-series lineups. And what's up with the 560i? So the new 5-series is going from 2.5L to 3.0L to 4.4L to 5.0L to 6.0L? It is covering too broad of engine sizes.

BMW engine failures **BMW admits some M3 engines prone to failure**

BMW recalls 4,000 vehicles due to engine problems - - Reuters / July 14, 2004

FRANKFURT -- BMW AG is recalling 4,000 vehicles worldwide due to defective engine control units, the company said on Wednesday.

"Due to a temporary production fault of a supplier, deficient parts were supplied and installed in new 5, 6 and 7-series and X5 models with V8 or V12 cylinder petrol engines," BMW said in a statement.

The defect may cause the engine to cut off after a relatively short running time, potentially leading to a failure of the power-steering assistance as well as the brake booster following repeated operation of the brake, it said.

"As a consequence, unexpected traffic situations including accidents may occur," BMW added.

The vehicles affected by the recall were built between May 12 and July 6 of this year.

"Due to the small number of cars affected, the costs of the recall will remain manageable," a spokesman for BMW said.

M3 engines fail - - Source: Autocar

Quote:
BMW M3 owners are being left stranded after several incidences of exploding engines in the £40k coupé. Owners have contacted Autocar claiming that their M3’s 3.4-litre engine has blown due to con-rod troubles. One M3 driver we have heard of is on his third engine.

BMW admits that there is a problem, but it says that rather than a issuing a recall all M3s will have ‘quality enhancement’ work, involving con-rod bearing replacement, carried out when unmodified cars visit a dealership.

However, with early M3s now out of warranty you could be left with a big bill if your engine fails, although a BMW spokesman said that owners having problems will be dealt with ‘sympathetically’.

I dont think they have a fix. The M3's are notorious for frame seperation, driveshaft seperation and engine failure. My cousin had a 2004 which suffered from all of the above multiple times. He finally sold it because it was going to kill him.

Thats bullshit from any company that wants to be referred to as luxury in the usa. If they can't develop a reliable 330+hp i6 maybe this should be the last time. Any future engine should be an m3 V8, probably why the the v8 is the damn rumor for the new m3, they can't solve the engine problems.
