Cadillac: Project GTP Hypercar News

There has been a lot of buzz about the upcoming Hypercar racing regulations, and we are seeing multiple companies revealing either the intention to compete in this hybrid racing format or already show concepts of the cars they will be entering, lately even Lamborghini announced their entry into the 24h of LeMans in 2024 with a chassis developed in cooperation with Ligier, and today we see a third-generation prototype being unveiled by luxury brand Cadillac, the Project GTP Hypercar that shows us a glimpse at how the actual racecar for the 2023 season of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will look like.

“Cadillac will be competing again on the world racing stage, and we are all thrilled to return to Le Mans after 20 years,” said Global Cadillac Vice President Rory Harvey. “By competing in both the 2023 IMSA and WEC championships, Cadillac Racing has the opportunity to demonstrate its capability, craftsmanship, and technology.”

And there are some big names involved in the development of this new Cadillac Project GTP Hypercar, starting with the in-house Cadillac Design who were joined by the official Cadillac Racing department, but also world-renowned Dallara got involved, and despite being a LeMans race car, the Project GTP Hypercar shows some key brand design characteristics, like the vertical lighting and floating blades that can be found all around this prototype, this clearly is a view into the future of Cadillac.

“The Project GTP Hypercar is a unique convergence of form and function and showcases Cadillac’s future performance aesthetic,” said Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer, Cadillac. “We have plenty more to come, from the upcoming race car to amazing production vehicles.”

Cadillac surely isn’t new to racing, especially in American sports racing where they’ve been competing with the DPi-V.R since 2017 in the IMSA manufacturers championship, and with considerable success too, achieving multiple overall wins, podiums, and even the entire championship, still, the new Project GTP Hypercar will be different, for one the power will come from a brand new 5.5L DOHC V-8 coupled to the LMDh common hybrid system to comply with the new race regulations for the upcoming years.

“Competing for the overall win at Le Mans with an iconic American brand like Cadillac is an honor,” said Laura Wontrop Klauser, GM sports car racing program manager. “The entire team is excited to continue building Cadillac’s racing legacy by competing against the very best internationally and in the world’s toughest race.”

On track endurance testing of the Cadillac Project GTP Hypercar already starts in the summer of 2022 with a first official outing for the Rolex 24 to be held on the famous Daytona track in 2023 trying to continue the winning streak Cadillac managed at this important endurance race, Cadillac actually won the Rolex 24 at Daytona four times in a row between 2017 and 2020, and that’s an amazing feat, they did come in second in 2021 by the way with the same number of laps (807) as the winner in an Acura DPi with a gap of just 4.704! In this year’s race, the IMSA 2022 Daytona 24 Cadillac came in third behind two Acura DPi, again the same number of laps (761) and just 4.420 behind.
