Woodcliff Lake, NJ, July 10, 2003 -- With the introduction of the all-new 6 Series Coupe, an icon is reborn. BMW is not just continuing the heritage of the legendary original 6 Series (1977-1989), it is launching the modern expression of an icon, while paying homage to the company's long tradition of luxury coupes.

Much like the original, the new 6 Series Coupe will be noticed first for its looks. The styling is bold, purposeful, dynamic and elegant all at once. Its unique design with sleek and flowing lines, all supplemented by the harmony of elegant surfaces, gives the new 6 Series its unique character. With its smooth and powerful engine, its outstanding agility and abundant interior space, the new BMW 645Ci will set new standards in the luxury sports coupe market on many fronts.

The power and the glory

The 4.4-liter V8 engine already well known from the BMW 745i ensures optimal power and torque over the entire engine speed range. Featuring fully variable VALVETRONIC valve control, the engine develops 325-horsepower and 330 lb-ft of powerful torque at 3,600 rpm. This enables the new 6 Series Coupe to effortlessly reach its top speed of 149 mph (electronically limited). Acceleration is equally good, with the BMW 645Ci covering the sprint from 0-60 mph in well under six seconds.

Rear wheel drive

Complementing the powerful engine is a choice of three different six-speed gearboxes, which transmit power to the rear wheels in traditional BMW style. As well as a manual six-speed transmission, the new BMW 645Ci comes with an optional six-speed automatic with Steptronic. For those with a taste for Formula 1 shifting, there is also a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with steering wheel paddles and gearshift lever.

Driving Dynamics Control (DDC) is similar to the sport function on BMW M3 and M5 models. Operated by a 'Sport' button on the centre console, DDC sharpens up throttle reaction for more responsive acceleration, as well as producing a more direct feel from the speed-related, power-assisted steering. When fitted with SMG or the Steptronic automatic, DDC also shifts gears at higher revs, changing ratios in a lightning 150 milliseconds.

Lightweight materials, heavyweight thinking

Consistent use of intelligent lightweight technologies makes a significant contribution to the outstanding driving comfort and high level of agility for which the new 6 Series Coupe will become well known. This class-leading agility is the result of the innovative combination of aluminum, steel and synthetic materials throughout the body.

The front section of the car is significantly lighter than steel thanks to lightweight construction. The targeted weight reduction continues throughout - the trunk lid is composite, the hood and doors are aluminum and the front fenders are thermoplastic. All this contributes to a base weight in European trim of 3528 lb with, of course, weight distribution close to the perfect ratio of 50:50. This consistent reduction of weight ensures not only performance befitting a sports car and exceptional agility, but it also contributes to an outstanding level of fuel economy.

Handling and Responsiveness

The lightweight all-aluminum suspension of the new 6 Series Coupe keeps unsprung weight to a minimum. Also working to the driver's advantage are myriad control systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including Dynamic Traction Control (DTC).

All 6 Series Coupes feature BMW's Active Roll Stabilization, which almost completely eliminates body roll. Part of the Sport Package in the U.S. will be BMW's unique Active Steering, which electronically varies the degree to which the front wheels turn in relation to steering input from the driver. Under normal driving conditions at low and medium speeds, the steering ratio becomes more direct, which causes the front wheels to turn more in relation to the steer wheel. This enhances the car's performance in city traffic, when parking or in curves. At higher speeds, the steering ratio becomes more indirect, which causes the front wheels to turn relatively less in relation to the steering wheel, offering greater directional stability.

Active Steering works hand in hand with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) by monitoring the yaw rate and changing the steering angle accordingly. This reduces the number of DSC interventions and thus offers optimum control comfort for the driver and passengers.

In addition to all the safety features characteristic of a BMW, the new 6 Series Coupe utilizes run-flat tires, allowing the driver to continue for a certain distance even when a tire is completely flat. Adaptive Headlights, which enhance visibility, illumination, and improve the driver's field of nighttime vision, are also available as an option.

Crafted in Dingolfing, Germany, this spectacular new 6 Series will be available for sale in the U.S. market in Spring 2004, after making its debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show in September of 2003.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupe will be followed, for the first time, by a second body style: a 2+2 convertible model.

The old 8 series still looks waaaaay better. The new 6 looks too much like the Z4 which itself is no beauty. I think they are trying too hard to be different. The reason that BMW has had so much sucess recently is because their cars look classy even 10 years after they come out. I doubt their new design theme will age anywhere like they think it will.

I'll take this anyday over the new 6:

interior seems like they copied it directly from the z4. not like im complaining because i like the interior but a slight change would have been nice

still not fond of that rear and they could have made the front a little more like the z4 than round the way it is

The fron end, rear end, rims and interior are all sub-par if you ask me. Especially the trunk. When I saw the first drawing of this car I thought the M6 would be the car for me in a year or two. Now that I've seen it, I'll be saving the money.

Horrible rear, just horrible!

I just got done reading and article about how the horrendous styling of the new 7 series has pushed the priceof the previous model through the roof because nobody wants the new one.

I love it and I could EASILY see one of those sitting in my garage in a few years. Along with a small SUV to get me around in the winter time.

Shawn S

PS…. Autoweek has a nice write-up with more photos:

BMW 6-Series

The rear-drive 6 Series starts with one engine: the 4.4-liter V8 from the 745i. Equipped with Valvetronic technology it delivers 333 hp at 6100 rpm along with 325 lb-ft of torque at 3700 rpm—good enough to push manual versions from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

In the second quarter of ‘04, BMW will include a mid-range 635Ci powered by a 272-hp 3.5-liter V8 as well as a budget-minded 630Ci running the familiar 231-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. An M6 is due in early 2005 and comes with a 500- to 550-hp V10.

your crazy... have you driven the new 7 or the new Z? their super comfortable driving positions.

its ironic that you throw the G35 into this comparison because the G35 easily has the worst seating position of any car in the league.

Has anyone seen any info on how much one of these BAD BOYS is gonna cost ???
Considering the base for an M3 is around 50K, I would guess the “Base” 333HP version will probably go for 60-65K… NO ???
The M6 will probably be 75-80K or more.

wouldnt it be priced about the same as the 5 series considering theyre equal cars like the 3 and 4 series? the 545i i dont believe will go for more than an M3, just my guess here, but its the same engine in the 545 and 645 so i'd imagine them being about the same.

wouldnt that be great if they brought back the 8 series?
4 series - A4 coupe - C Coupe
6 series - CLK
8 series? - CL?
im pretty sure this isnt a CL fighter so thats why i put the 6 with the CLK.

the 6 series is replacing the 8 series, because when the 8 series came out it replaced the then discontinued 6 series. make sense Same league of car/coupe different number series.

And the 850 used to cost somewhere between 90-100K, so you can bet what the M6 will cost you.

This may be the best yet of the Bungle designed bimmers (which isnt saying much) but like i said in my earlier post it doesnt hold a a candle to the classic sexiness and better design of the 8 series.

The reason to buy coupes is to look good and smoke sedans. This car does neither. I'll wait for the M.

Yea, 333HP and 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds won’t beat anything.

i just cant see this being an upscale niche car. the M6 will be costly but more than likely not over 90k and amenities wise and all this car is in no position to take on the SL/CL, period. so pricing it in that area wouldnt make sense. i dunno, im basing all my presumtions on Mercedes-Benz and their niche cars.

I guaruntee you the M6 will be over 90K. I'm willing to bet on it.

You'll probably see pricing for the first 6 to hit somewhere in the 60-70K base range.

This is no SL comptetitor, never was. The "premiere BMW sports coupe" has its own heritage where is more rich well known then the MB CL. It will way more amenities then you think and the way it will handle will make you piss yourself.

I have no doubt what they will do with this car mechanically and technologically, it will be AMAZING.

But aesthetically, bimmer has lost its way for the time being. And its that fact that saddens me. I was so looking forward to the return of the 6 for years since the demise of the 8 and here it is, an artistic shadow to the great design of the two coupes prior to it...

I think it mentoned an est 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.5 seconds, but that is on the conservative side, I will bet that car mags will get times of 5.3 secs or less for 0-60 mph.

BTW.. that is the time that Audi had estimated for its S4 as well a 0-62 mph time of 5.6 secs.

lol... usually your a fairly level headed guy and maintain a sufficient level of logic and intelligence.

however... lately... you have catapulted yourself to the `TOP 10 MOST RIDICULOUS COMMENTS ON ACURA-CL.COM` list for 2003.

...Too bad it isnt a category in the Webby awards cuz you could take one home...

*sighs* People will never be satisfied...just watch one day you get cars with 4000HP at the wheels and go from 0-60 in 1.1s and they're still b*tching about how it's too slow (DAMMIT, I want a car that goes from from 0-60 in ZERO seconds!!! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE *^@%#@**ing CAR COMPANIES?!? WHY DO THEY HAFTA MAKE SUCH SLOW CARS, HUH!?!??)...

5.6sec isn't very fast for a car of this price level, 30k cars-sure, not 60k.

I, going to agree with the front and the rims.

Those tear drops rims...not feelin them.

The headlights and grill, sorry they suck, if they were reworked to a bit more old school bmw design then the car would be fucking amazing. Hell, I can even live with the interior, ts growing on me.

I still want an 850 more right now, though

From what I've seen of the other recent Bimmer updates, this new 6 series is BMWs only chance!

I kinda like it.
