hmmm...BMW 530i or a CTS-V??

who the fuck would take the BMW??? gimmie a break....the CTS-V doesnt have the best interior design in the world but for the love of christ almighty, a CTS-V will absolutely slaughter a 530i in ANY performance test in the entire universe, not to mention turn alot more heads....then you can take the extra 8k you wouldve spend on a slow ass 530i and get a bangin system and some tint, etc on that CTS-V

BMW continues to smoke alot of crack on their pricing, what a fucking joke.

With a nice discount from the Cadillac stealer I'll go for the CTS-V instead the 530i (not that I am going to buy a sedan any time soon…)
Details on the CTSV's options pricing are not out yet. We will know in a few weeks.

If you're talking Deville/Seville, then yes. If you're talking SRX, CTS, XLR, no way. In other words, the new Cadillac is very close to BMW/Mercedes/Lexus now. Especially when considering the price.

I completely disagree. The new Caddy's are moving WAY up in quality. I'd take a CTS-V over the 530 any day.. It's got M5 beating performance, interesting styling just like the 5 series (love it or hate it) Yes, the interior isn't great, but IMO the new 5 series interior design is just plain strange.

BMW really keeps shooting themselves in the foot lately

Well at least the previous gen M5. I just hope that they do something to the look of the new M5 so it doesn't look bangle-ish.

BMW defends higher price of next-generation 5 Series

By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. - Showing faith in the strength of its brand premium and the willingness of customers to pay for state-of-the art technology, BMW has increased the price of the next-generation 5 Series by up to 6 percent.

The increase, which flies in the face of downward pricing pressure in today's cutthroat market, is justified by the new generation's improved performance and handling, and use of cutting-edge technology, executives said here last week.

Prices start at $39,995, including $695 destination charge, for the 525i and rise to $58,295 for the 545i with a six-speed manual transmission and sport equipment package.

"We decided that we either were going to do the new 5 Series like the existing car, or advance the state of the art - and all of these advanced technologies cost money," said Richard Brekus, manager of product planning and strategy, at a media preview for the car.

Standard features on the 2004 model include an all-aluminum suspension, dynamic stability control, tire-pressure monitoring system and a simplified version of BMW's iDrive control and command system, which debuted with much criticism on the 7 Series.

The 5 Series' iDrive has only four menus, rather than seven, and a new button that recalls the main menu to the control knob.

But most of the gee-whiz, advanced technical features on the redesigned 5 are offered as options that cost the buyer extra. They include active steering; active cruise control, which measures distance to the vehicle ahead and adjusts speed accordingly; active roll stabilization; run-flat performance tires; and head-up instrument display.

Active cruise control costs $2,200; active steering comes only with a $3,300 sport package that includes active roll stabilization and a sport suspension; and the head-up display is priced at $1,000 but must be purchased with the $1,800 navigation system.

BMW says its active steering system, which does not use drive-by-wire technology, is the first system to vary steering ratio according to vehicle speed and other driving conditions.

"Whenever the car does something you didn't expect it to do, it induces countering steering - up to 2.5 degrees at the front axle," said Philip Koehn, head of BMW's active steering program.

The new 5 is bigger than its predecessor in most every dimension. Height has grown by 1.3 inches, wheelbase by 2.3 inches, length by 2.6 inches and width by 1.8 inches.

Despite the size increase, most models weigh less because 15 percent of the body and chassis structure are aluminum.

The car, entering its fifth generation, is critical for BMW. Although the 5 Series represents only one-sixth of BMW's U.S. volume, it generates about one-quarter of the company's worldwide profits.

Sales are expected to at least match the current generation's selling rate during the past three years of about 40,000 units annually, Brekus said.

Initially, three 5 Series sedans will be sold here. The 530i, powered by a 3.0-liter inline six, debuts Friday, Sept. 26. The other two models - the base 525i, equipped with a 2.5-liter inline six, and the range-topping 545i, powered by the 4.4-liter V-8 from the 7 series - go on sale about two weeks later.

Look at the interior of the new 5, it is ugly as hell. What makes BMW think they are so superior? 530i? BMW should offer at least a 3.5L I6 engine since all the other companies offer something bigger, even at lower price for lower class of sport sedans. Look at the new TL, come on, $34k almost fully loaded. Look at G35, most of the stuff you can find in that $58k 530i, you can find in a fully loaded G, for $20k less. Comparing comfort? This year Lexus ES330 costs only $38.5k fully loaded. For $44k base price, this bimmer is still missing leather seats, HIDs, and a decent CD changer. Oh my god.........many high tech items in that new bimmer are something people don't need and can't see or touch......Let's wait and see how many 5-series BMW could sell within the next few years.......

There. That's the key statement here:

"The car, entering its fifth generation, is critical for BMW. Although the 5 Series represents only one-sixth of BMW's U.S. volume, it generates about one-quarter of the company's worldwide profits."

Which means that the profit margins are HIGH! Higher than other cars they sell.

Profit margins= up
Cutomer rip off factor = up

A 3.5 liter, 275HP engine, is on the way. And it will probably be a V6, not an I6.

While the hp is nice, it is hardly what makes a car dominant. If the car is well balanced such that the braking, handling is also up to par, than it will be dominant. But for me, the current (i guess old gen) M5 is the dominant sports sedan without question. It looks very businesslike but athletic and handles and drives smaller than it is.

the M5 is one of the best handling cars even for its size and weight. I dont think this one is gonna be any different. The previous m5 went like 13.2 in the 1/4 mile and this one i think will be 13.0 or even be int he 12s......now that is crazy for a sedan!

They really have their heads up their ass at BMW. You have to be smoking crack to pay that much for a 530, especially considering that it ain't even that great looking. Imagine what the M5 will cost.

i'm sure some people with money are happy, the car is only becoming more exclusive. if i was making it, i would opt out for the 70k 540i with the massaging seats smg head ups etc, pretty sick car.
