Some dude
I think the hatch/trunk combo its the dumbest thing about this car. What exactly is the point of a trunk door when there is already a hatch that you can use to put stuff into the trunk? Is it for the people too lazy the lift the whole hatch when putting shopping bags into that pig? Or did BMW realize how ugly this thing is and wanted people to talk about something else?

I'm the Firestarter
My guess BMW had to come up with something to compete with the Panamera, to go after all these buyers who want an expensive yet ugly car.

We get it, you think the X6 is ugly.
But thats different, people either hate the X6 or LOVE it. I havent heard many saying they love the 5GT.

Well, I think maybe the 5GT gives those guys who like the 5er a "wagon" choice without going into an SUV/CUV-ish vehicle...?
I'm sure an M-badged version is coming soon.
And honestly, I think this car will do alright. My point was, if a polarizing vehicle like the X6 would sell...this will too.

M Variant...
From Autoblog: http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/22/b...sport-package/
You may think that adding an M Sport pack to the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig, but let's be honest: BMW has to do something to broaden the 5GT's appeal and try to boost sales. BMW had projected that it would sell between 4,000 and 8,000 of its Gran Turismo range annually in the United States. Yet in 2010, the company only managed to move 2,848. Ouch.
Our spy photographers caught this prototype of a 5 Series GT out in Germany, dressed up in what appears to be traditional M Sport kit. Notice the revised front fascia, larger M-style wheels, revised side skirts and ever-so-slightly touched-up rear bumper. Like all other M Sport models, don't expect a boost in power output, and that's just fine – one thing we've always enjoyed about the 550i model is its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8.

He loves his And it has a lot more utility than the X6...even though I like the X6 more.
I drove it last year when I was visiting, its really nice.
Its definitely a failure in the states. Its not the most attractive design. And its biggest foe is its own price.
If this car was 10-15k less, it would sell better.

I gotta admit.... in that pic, focusing on the fender towards the rear, that shape appeals to me. The rear is still horribly awkward though.
In any case, I still prefer the A7. The only part where Audi fugged up on that A7 is the rear, at least design-wise.

BMW's midsize sedan is about to get a four-banger -- two less cylinders than it has now -- to save gas.
In a surprise move, BMW says its recently introduced 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine will make its way to the 2012 5-Series. The new engine will appear on the 528i and replace the naturally aspirated 3-liter six-cylinder, but returns the same horsepower.
Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and start/stop technology, the new powertrain promises to return up to 15% better fuel efficiency than the 2011 528i, which got an impressive 22/32 miles per gallon city/highway. On top of that, the new powertrain will offer zero to 60 mph acceleration times of 6.2 seconds. That's 0.4 seconds faster than the old six-cylinder.
There's also a new intelligent all-wheel-drive option for the 528i. The car goes on sale this fall.

Not quite sure why this is surprising since the 328 is getting the same treatment. 6.2s to 60 from the same HP for a fairly heavy car is very good along with about 34MPG hwy. It's not about the number of cyclinders folks.

Fahrvergnügen'd
I have crawled around a 5er GT at a car show and even if the designs are terrible (to some) the cars are exceptionally well built. You can see curves in the sheet metal that are just not there in other competitors. Those curves aren't cheap to stamp out but you can see it in the panel gaps, the quality of the plastics on the light lenses, etc ...
I don't know that a 550i GT is worth $70k but I can see why some of these cars are so much more expensive than competitors.

That was 2009.....I must admit that over time, I now like the 5 GT.

I've driven a 5GT and I loved the interior. Too bad that feeling didn't make up for the exterior looks.
