Serious question here for the older folks, well those not in school.

What does it take to own a 70k car?

I hate when I get closer to real life, its like these dreams keep getting pushed farther and farther away. There's no way I'm going to own a 70k car without owning a house first.
Graduating at 23, with 60k in debt hopefully finding a job anywhere from 40-60k, which may be on the lower side but I dont like to be optimistic haha

Theres probably gonna be the next gen out before I even start looking at these

Patience and hard work are two things. That's kinda how things are. I've been lucky to have no student loans when I graduated (by keeping jobs and scholarships). So, I guess that's why I was ahead of the game and able to be selective with my car purchases.

Remember, whatever you do: get your home first. Calculate what you can afford and what is left on the table. A car, as great and fun as it is, is a depreciating hunk of bolts, rubber, and metal (unless you bought a Ferrari ). So, it is not worth it until you can truly afford it.

So, again...be patient and work hard. I think the newer generation (millenials) tend to forget that...not everything is now now now. Just not how the world works...

I dont back it at all, but given the circumstances, this won't stop me from buying one.
Oh for sure, it sounds amazing from the outside in that video!

But yea, that's pretty much my point, that BMW is shifting the direction of the M division so that its models will still be fine luxury cars. The older M3's were definitely more "raw." Tire noise? Wind noise? Those were part of the M package.

The F10 M5 with active sound has been out for over a year now and no one talks about it anymore. Even the current F10 M5 owners, mostly because its not as pronounced as one would think. I was also a hater before having a lot of seat time in an M5.

Go romp on one and see if you even notice it.

Read this one. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/f10...ive-sound.html
To be fair, there are newer threads that talk about this issue like the ones below:

As you can see, there are owners that think ASD is lame. Of course, that is not to say BMW has made the wrong decision since there are probably a lot of people who like this idea. It's just the way things are nowadays. Luckily, some people have found a way to disable the system. But perhaps BMW should consider having a button to toggle the ASD system.

Same here lol. I'm not as ambitious as you, as I'm "only" saving up for a NA2 NSX.

Definitely get a a place to live first. You don't want to be paying rent and make the landlord rich while making yourself poor. I don't know what the house pricing is like in your area, but if you really wanna drive a $70k car, then you probably need to buy a place that has a lower price tag.

I would then consider leasing the car. I don't know what the lease offer is like for the new M3, but using the X5 5.0 as an example as it is also a $70k car, monthly payment before tax/fees is $820/month for 36 months with $3.5k down payment. In other words, be prepared to pay $900/month for a $70k vehicle.

Here are some rough numbers per month for you to consider (based on where I live with your target income level):

Gross income: $5000
Net income: $3500
Mortgage payment: $1500 (assuming a $300k mortgage @~3% for 25 years
Property tax: $150
Home maintenance: $100
Phone bills: $50
Fuel: $200
Auto insurance: $200
Car Maintenance: $100
Utilities (power, water, heat, garbage, recycling): $150
Food: $350
Entertainment: $100

After deducting the above, you are left with around $600. That is not including things such as paying off your debt, having a girlfriend, gifts, booze, saving, emergency fund, saving for the next car down payment, etc

Good to have a dream and goals.

So, remember it and work towards it!

And yes, buy a Ferrari.

I'll be happy to end up with a lower-range Porsche when I hit my "mid-life" crisis sometime around my 50s. Until then, the FX will likely give way to something similar in cost in a few years...Definitely not going to go upwards in price-point.

I'm thinking a 535i or this lovely 4-Series?

Do it like how all the kids are doing it these days... live at home til you're 30+ and buy whatever car you can afford

Even if you don't get this generation M4, who knows, the next M4 might blow this one away in 7 or so years.

I'll figure it out. I'm good with math and I think I'll be good with money, I'm pretty ambitious.

Anyway enough of reality talk... I need my dose of M4! Should have worked towards becoming a part time car journalist while in college then I'd have BMW sending me this to test drive and write a review ahaha

I just saw these and I agree with the others comments. Patience and hard work over everything.

I always wanted an M3, but I realized that just because I could make the payments on one, didn't mean I could really afford one. Last year I decided I was in a good financial position to get a new car and was able to get my M3 before I turned 30. I waited until I was in a good place in my career, finished grad school, and paid off all my student loans.

I actually spotted the first one today. There was a white 428i at the work parking structure.

It looked pretty damn sexy to me. Looks very wide and long.

M4

We've just spied some latest M4 and M3 prototypes. The M4 Coupe is seen in Sakhir Orange while the M3 sedans spotted were in Alpine White and Silverstone. Both cars feature the optional M Carbon Ceramic Brakes.

The gauges can be seen in the M4 coupe and they look to be the same as the ones we previously showed you (see photos reposted below), with a redline starting around 7500 RPM (rev limiter to kick in a bit after that).

Both cars will have their world premieres at the 2014 Detroit auto show in mid-January. Expect a reveal next Thursday, December 12th. Deliveries of both cars will commence in early Summer of 2014.

Well ordering isnt available yet but its 1st spot on the waiting list for the M3 and 3rd spot for the M4. Both cars will be in that blue.

Agreed but MBZ and BMW have no right to produce a red car. Their red colors are hideous and don't belong on their saloons or coupes
