It was called the 318ti and it was a flop in the US.

No one buys Accords and Camrys to be fun (unless they are idiots). People buy them cause they are the BEST family transportation and because of RELIABILITY. Not prestige.

A BMW 1 series will be too small. Hell a current 3 is way smaller than a Camry/Accord. No one will cross-shop.

They WILL cross-shop the TSX with the 1 series though.

IMO, bmw and benz do not know/are not capable of making hi- quality, reliable cheap cars i.e. under 30k...watch all the issues these new cheap german cars will have....only the japanese are capable of making great automobiles for under 30k IMO

how well does the C320 kompresser hatchback hold up in terms of preformance and reliability and bang for the buck?

aren't these 1 series going to have about 110hp?? and since they're prolly under-rated, it'll actually be around 130hp?? but for $20k+, that's just crazy

The 1 series will probably be too under powered to compete with the TSX. I think the only people who are cross shopping the 1 series and the TSX are those who have X dollars to spend and they aren't sure/don't care what kind of car to look for.

I think the 1 series will be better competition for the Jetta/GTI market and those who want small (Civic, Corolla, etc) but have a little more money to spend. Heck, I could see it be direct competition for the Mini...lol

For BMW to compete with the Accord and Camry, they would need a cheapened version of the 3 series offered in FWD. IMHO

He was very different on the MTV Award breaks. I was actually surprised. He is a lot more "idiotic" on Crank Yankers. Today at 9PM CST the new season starts (Comedy Channel). Dont miss it.

Is the 1-series going to be even smaller than the 3-series, and trying to compete against Accord V6 and Camry V6? If so, then BMW is too confident about its charm, expecting people who couldn't afford a 3-series or larger BMW vehicles to downgrade themselves to buy a BMW-branded Civic. If BMW is so jealous of the profits that Toyota and Honda and Nissan make from their mid-sized family sedans, it really should make the "1-series" good enough to attract those people.

This must be a dark time for those executive/members of bmw who wish to pursue such foolish ideas.
To think that the consumers are going to dive into an underpowered, over-rated, (possibly) highly decorated civic is just insane. As Kelly Bundy said it, "Doesn't it make your brain jiggle like jello." Thats how ridiculous this attempt is in trying to attract younger buyers. But the fact is that younger buyers want MOER POWER... and we can only wait to see what this 1 time prestigous name does

BMW ownership will become a whole lot cheaper next October when the eagerly awaited 1-series goes on sale in the UK as a three-or five-door hatchback. A four-door saloon arrives later.

Munich sources suggest a worldwide potential of at least 250,000 annual sales by the middle of the decade, with around 30,000 in the UK. To put that in perspective, that’s less than half last year’s global 3-series sales of 561,249.

The 1-series’ design adheres closely to BMW’s open-top CS1 concept car. Autocar’s scoop photographs confirm the new look, with BMW’s signature kidney grille and ‘Hofmeister kick’ at the base of the C-pillar, but also more radical convex and concave surfacing that should sit well with younger buyers.

What will make the 1-series stand out from every premium rival is its rear-drive layout – something BMW’s head of R&D, Burkhardt Goeschel, claims will provide razor-sharp handling. If he’s right, the One could set the new standard among hatchbacks.

However, this longitudinal engine layout and prop shaft gobble up valuable interior space, and rear accommodation in particular is said to be poor compared with front-drive competitors. This is compounded by a low-slung sporty stance – the car sits 80mm lower than a Golf. Boot space stretches to 300 litres.

Underneath, the new car shares more than 40 per cent of its componentry with the next 3-series, including its MacPherson strut (front) and trapezoidal link (rear) suspension, as well as its axle assemblies, braking system and wiring harness.

Power for BMW’s new entry-level model comes from two different versions of the familiar 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produced at the Hams Hall factory in the Midlands. It kicks out 105bhp in the 116i and 120bhp in the 118i.

Also planned from the outset for UK sale are two versions of the excellent 2.0-litre common-rail turbodiesel. Munich sources say it will produce 115bhp in the 118d and a strong 150bhp in the 120d. About a year after launch, a sporty 120i model running a 215bhp four-cylinder turbo will join the line-up.

BMW has already registered the names 125i and 130i,proving that six-cylinder Ones are on the drawing board.

All models get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the Sequential Manual Gearbox nudge-shift and a six-speed auto will be optional. Conspicuous by its D C absence is the iDrive multi-function controller; expect instead a back-to-basics interior like the Z4’s. With prices in Germany 10 per cent above the Golf’s, that suggests a starter price of around Ł15k.

Spin-off versions of the 1-series will be badged 2-series and the first models – a coupé and a cabriolet based around the CS1 concept shown overleaf on page 9 – will arrive at the end of 2006 and 2007.

The move is part of a plan that will see all of BMW’s two-door models adopt even-number designations, with the more conventional four-door offerings continuing with odd numbers.
The highlight of the new line-up will be the M2 performance coupé.

Described by BMW sources as the spiritual successor to the original M3, it will be powered by a highly-strung 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine delivering up to 240bhp.

Wow.... I really don't like that car in the pictures at all. Doesn't seem like a BMW to me. BMW and hatchback shouldn't go together IMO

Reminding you that the 318ti was also a hatchback which was sold in the USA. And it failed and discontinued from the USA market. Hatchbacks are hot in Europe as we all know and it continued selling there but never sold like hot cakes.

Seems like the 1 series is aimed more at the Civic Si, Golf, or Focus SVT rather than the big V6 Accord/Camry/Altimas. Seems like BMW is cheapening their brand more and more. And for what?

i dont know about cheapening, they still make 100k dollar cars. I think they are looking to expand their brand loyalty. Its smart to set a price that the mid 20's fresh out of school can afford. Then down the road bmw would like them to upgrade to the bigger, and presumably more profitable models.

The Compact was a POS based on the E30 chassis IIRC (when the E36 was current).

Oh I know about the 318ti. My best friend had one in Highschool. It really was a POS and that's why I still feel strongly that BMW's should not make hatchbacks in the US

Spied: BMW 1-Series

From AutoWeek

ALL PHOTOS © 2004 BY JOHN JOHNSON

BMW was set to reveal to the world its 1 Series at the Geneva Motor Show in early March, but we hear that debut has been pushed back to the Paris show in October. Regardless of its official unveiling, we have the first-ever on-road look at the little Bimmer, courtesy of our intrepid spy shooter who spotted this 1 Series undergoing winter tests in Sweden.

The car is slated for launch late this year with the five-door, shown here, first out of the blocks. A three-door will follow six months after that. An interesting feature seen in these pictures is the small rear hatch, making it look sportier than the Volkswagen Golf, one of its main competitors.

Power in Europe includes a variety of gas and diesel engines; there are no announcements yet on U.S. specs. Expect prices to be about 20 percent less than a 3 Series, putting it in the $25,000 neighborhood. Can a 2 Series be far behind?
Fugly IMO. Although I'm sure they'll be a sedan and coupe to follow.
