Black box conundrum

Automotive event data recorders should be regulated by federal law that guarantees data ownership to the vehicle owner and requires notification to owners of vehicles fitted with EDRs. So says the Alliance of Automotive Manufacturers, a trade group that represents BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen. The group has been working to reach common ground on the issue within the alliance, whose members diverge widely on EDR use.
