Automakers' November 2003 Sales: Nissan up, Ford down, GM up...
Nissan sales sizzle in Nov.
Reuters / December 02, 2003
DETROIT -- Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said on Tuesday that its U.S. vehicle sales rose 15.6 percent in November to 63,930 cars and trucks.
"It looks like it might be our best November ever," said Jed Connelly, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Nissan North America. "Everything we read indicates that things are firming up for next year, and that's a good sign for everybody."
Connelly said that sales were boosted by the Altima mid-sized sedan, and the new Pathfinder Armada full-sized SUV. Sales results were adjusted for an extra selling day in November last year.

Ford sales slip 2%

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. said on Tuesday that its U.S. new car and truck sales fell 2 percent to 255,533 vehicles in November.
Ford said it sold 79,613 cars in November, down 9.7 percent from November last year. Total truck sales rose 1.4 percent to 175,920 units.
The results include Ford's overseas brands Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo and some medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Ford's results are not adjusted for industry selling days.
Ford cut its fourth-quarter North American production plan by 20,000 cars to 900,000, saying it planned to sell fewer Ford Taurus sedans to rental companies. It estimated first-quarter 2004 North American production at 1.03 million vehicles, the same level as the first quarter of this year.

Japan sales fall in Nov.
Reuters / December 01, 2003
TOKYO -- Japanese new-vehicle sales slipped in November for the first time in three months but analysts said the trend was broadly flat and that was likely to remain the case.
Industrywide sales of new cars fell 4.8 percent in November from a year earlier to 457,701 vehicles, data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Mini Vehicle Association showed on Monday.
"This was weaker than we had expected," said Christopher Richter, an auto analyst at HSBC Securities.
"But this has been a flat market for the last five years and I would expect the numbers to keep bouncing up and down for the next few months," said Richter, who forecasts overall sales would rebound with a 5 percent rise in December.
For the year to date, total sales are up 0.6 percent at 5,396,348 units.
Total sales were down at second-ranked Honda Motor Co. Ltd. despite the launch of a new version of its Odyssey minivan in late October, slumping 40.3 percent compared with November last year when the company had lured buyers with incentives.
A spokeswoman for the company said that sales of the Odyssey had been strong and the fall could mainly be explained by a drop in sales of small cars like the Fit subcompact, which were surging a year earlier.
Sales at top auto maker Toyota Motor Corp., edged down 2.6 percent, while Mitsubishi Motors Corp. posted a gain of 24 percent.
Mitsubishi's domestic sales have been recovering this year thanks to the launch of its Colt sub-compact and Grandis minivan.
