While I dont see the R8 being the best thing on the track, I still think it will sell.

I mean when was the last time you saw a GT3 in a rap video.

Slightly off topic. I will never understand auto manufacturers. VW owns Audi and Lamborghini. They put Audi into Le Mans get them a bunch of victories for what to me has always been an entry level luxury vehicle. Then they start shoving all sorts of go fast goodies to compete with M and AMG, via the S4, then RS4, etc, etc. and now the R8.

What I don't understand is why they wouldn't do something about Lamborghini. Maybe they're just happy they sell, idk. But with Ferrari so distracted by F1, why not put Lambo into the LeMans...not that they've ever won anything, but it would still be neat to see them racing. I find it pathetic that they have "Le Mans" Diablo and Murcielago and I can't even google and information on the last time they raced any Le Mans. Maybe my memory is fuzzy but where is Lamborghini's racing history... WTF is VW doing?
in the (unlikely) event you don't know - it's not exactly a "history" but Lamborghini has had a presence in FIA / ALMS with the Murcielago R-GT, since 2003. This is as a result of Reiter Engineering and not Audi, but still, they do have some kind of presence.

They make exotics, that arent seriously flashy, seriously fast, seriously fun to drive, but always get owned by their more focused rivals. Lamborghini has always been marked by this. Clarkson talked about it during either the LP640 review or the Gallardo review about how it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, just not something that makes it the right car for someone trying to win at a track. Audi has been in the racing game for over a decade... and winning at that.
And also, as alluded to earlier, Audi has been in the racing game for much much longer than a decade.. try about 70 years. And incidentally, Audi is unveiling a new R8 commercial on April 6th 07 that is going to play like a movie trailer.. covering the company's 70 years of racing history. More info here:

http://thegarageblog.com/garage/audi...in-60-seconds/

Looks like its gonna be a wicked commercial.

oops and uhh.. this was the result of Audi AG and Reiter...

from the link above:

Since the introduction of the Murcielago in September 2001, there has been an increasing demand for a high performance model based on the Lamborghini flagship, therefore Audi AG, current owner of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, decided the time was right to built such an extreme car.

Developed by Automobili Lamborghini SpA, with the help of Audi Sports Division and well known German based Reiter Engineering, the Murcielago R-GT will be built to FIA and ALMS specifications.

Post Audi R8 Spider news...

From CAR Online...

Audi is lopping the top off its R8 supercar - and CAR Online has the exclusive proof. This official design sketch leaked from the company's Ingolstadt design studios shows exactly how the open-air R8 will look when it goes on sale in 2009. It follows our scoop on the Audi A1 yesterday, and we have more Audi news to come tomorrow.

This drawing reveals the R8 targa for the first time, with twin speedster humps incorporating breathing vents for the mid-engined V8 behind the two-seater cockpit. The doors are deeply scalloped, as on the coupe, but this time there's a shortened, stumpier aluminium-look blade just ahead of the rear wheels. Tone down the cartoony feel of this sketch (just look at the liquorice-wrapped, deeply dished alloys) and this is the final production car.

This picture confirms CAR Magazine's scoop (October 2006) that the R8 will have removable targa panels, rather than a space-gobbling removable fabric roof or folding hard-top. Fact is, most buyers of this £85k roadster will live in hotter climes like Florida, where a fiddly targa top won't be a problem.

Powering the R8 Spider will be the same 4.2-litre V8 that you'll find in the RS4 and R8 tin-top. It's a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 mustering 414bhp - easily enough to make the lightweight, alumnium R8 a very capable sports car indeed. And this targa version is aimed squarely at open-top versions of the 911.

There's more change in store for the R8. Audi is planning to drop in the V10 from its donor car, the Lamborghini Gallardo, which will give the R8 sufficient poke (500bhp+) that its four-wheel drive chassis has always cried out for.

It's all part of Audi's continuing plan to leapfrog BMW and Mercedes to become the world's biggest premium car maker by 2015. Niche-filling is the name of the game, as the company targets 1.5 million sales a year, so expect derivatives galore...

I've seen two of these in just 3 days here in Frankfurt - it looks good in person. Sure stands out of the crowd of Opels, WVs and other pedestrian cars.
