Audi: Q7, SQ7 News
Upcoming Audi SUV to wear Q7 badge - - RALPH KISIEL | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek
Audi's first sport-utility will be called the Q7, an Audi AG executive said Thursday at the Paris Motor Show.
"The letter Q denotes a new type family within our company, alongside A, S and RS," says Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the Audi AG board of management. The 7 indicates that it is positioned between the A6 and A8, Winterkorn says.
Audi will launch the Q7 in early 2006. The production version will be based on the Pikes Peak quattro concept study that Audi had unveiled at the 2003 Detroit auto show.
The five-door, seven-seater Q7 will be built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne SUVs. It will be equipped with Audi's 4.2-liter V-8 engine and feature three rows of seating.
The introduction of the Q7 could lead to the end of the Audi allroad quattro vehicle, which is based on the Audi A6 wagon and is an attempt by the automaker to provide its customers with an SUV-like product.

Audi Q's Up Giant Off-roader To Sink X5 - - By Matt Joy - - Source: Autoexpress
Audi is heading to the front of the Q! The German manufacturer has confirmed that it is to launch an innovative off-roader - and this week's Auto Express magazine has the pictures. What's more, we can reveal the newcomer's name - it will be called the Q7.
Sources have admitted the car will be a 'crossover' SUV, rather than a hardcore mud-plugger. In keeping with Audi's image, it will be a luxury 4x4 aimed at the forthcoming Range Rover Sport and BMW's X5. Due to be introduced in 12 months' time, the Q7 will be the first in a range of off-roaders from the firm to wear the Q badge beyond 2006.
As the mag's pictures show, the car's styling mirrors that of the Pikes Peak concept, which debuted at 2003's Detroit Motor Show. The Q7 manages to successfully apply the new Audi look to a large SUV, and despite its size, it maintains a clean, unfussy appearance compared to some of its competitors.
The newcomer will share mechanical components with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne - that means it will get a sophisticated chassis and four-wheel drive to cope with reasonably demanding terrain, as well as provide excellent on-road handling. As the Q7 is aimed at the prestige end of the market, comfort is crucial, so the chassis will be biased towards on-road performance.
Inside, the cabin has been designed to carry passengers rather than grubby cargo. Three rows of two seats accommodate six adults with ease, while there is enough boot space for their luggage.
A wide engine range will be offered. The base petrol unit will be the 3.6-litre V6, with a 4.2-litre V8 FSI and an Audi-tuned version of the Lamborghini Gallardo's 5.0-litre V10 completing the line-up. For the Q7, the latter will be bored out to 5.2 litres and tweaked to deliver 420bhp - enough to take motorways and muddy tracks in its stride. There will also be V6, V8 and V10 diesels. Offering an alternative to the A8, the Q7 is tipped to cost from around £40,000.
Meanwhile, Audi has revealed prices for the revised A4 range - and they're up slightly on the outgoing model. The base 1.6-litre four-door costs £18,765, while the flagship 3.2 FSI multitronic is £27,575. Four diesels are available, with the smallest - the 1.9-litre TDI - weighing in at £20,090. Avant prices start at £19,915. Deliveries begin in January.

Nice looking, but I agree...it took them way too long. I mean even the VW Toureag was late to the game...and we've seen the Audi SUV in prototype guise a few years back (remember the Pike's Peak? (click)).

We ambushed the upcoming Audi crossover wagon on a secret late-night test drive earlier this week. Ignore the phony emblems: this is in fact the new Q7.
Based on the design features that we've seen on Audi's Pikes Peak concept, the Q7 will be riding on a modified Touareg/Cayenne platform, lengthened to accommodate seven passengers in three rows of seats.
The Q7 is expected to be launched as a 2006 model, and will be powered by a 4.2-liter V-8. A diesel option is expected for the 2007 model year.

It looks strange.. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but it's really long and squat.. I'd have to see a production model to see if I like it, but overall, I'd say no.

I think this is going to be the nicest redition of the platform. I already like the fact that it'll have a third row of seats. That huge grill will work much better here than on the cars. I look forward to seeing it completed.

It does look more like a tall wagon than an SUV.

Spied! - Audi Q7 - - PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA LEHMANN/HIDDEN IMAGE - - Source: CarandDriver.com
Ever since cell phones with cameras came on the market, it has become even more difficult for test-car drivers when it comes to secrecy. This prototype got caught on its way from Ingolstadt, Germany, up to cold-weather testing in Northern Finland. Audi’s upcoming SUV, codenamed Q7, is based on the VW Touareg and has the same wheelbase but a slightly longer rear end. It is expected to be powered by Audi’s 4.2-liter V-8. Look for the Q7 to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 2005.

Audi's Road Runner: Q7 sport ute spied; seven-seater set to debut late next year

Audi’s Q7 sport/utility vehicle, spied 10 months before its September 2005 Frankfurt motor show debut, aims for more adept on-road qualities than rugged ability in the rough stuff.
The Q7, which replaces Audi’s allroad in late 2005, is based on modified underpinnings from the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne. However, Audi will shed much of the Touareg’s hard-core four-wheel-drive bits, including its low-range gearing and locking differentials, to reduce weight and costs.
Q7’s appearance is reminiscent of the Pikes Peak concept shown in Detroit in 2003. A longer rear overhang should create enough space for a third row of seats to provide the Ingolstadt newcomer with space for seven.
Engines should include a 4.2-liter 330-hp V8, a 3.2-liter 240-hp V6, and possibly a turbodiesel. Also under consideration is a QS7 performance model, followed in 2007 with a smaller Q5 model riding on A4 underpinnings.

Gavril, the moderator here, is pretty good with new info. Chances are, if you found it elsewhere, he already has a thread for it here.

Audi says it will offer two SUVs for the U.S. market; Q7 to be followed by A4-based model - - By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek
In the next few years, Audi of America will offer two SUVs.
The seven-seat Q7 goes on sale in March 2006. About three years from now, the Q7 will be followed by a smaller SUV based on the A4, Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president of Audi of America, said Sunday.
Audi decided SUVs were a necessity in the U.S. market.
"You cannot be one of the leading players in this market if you do not have an SUV," de Nysschen said. "We probably waited a bit too long here at Audi."
The Q7 will be priced at about $40,000, he said. De Nysschen thinks Audi can sell up to 50,000 of the all-wheel-drive Q7s a year. But sales in 2006 likely will be between 15,000 and 20,000 units, he said.
"Based on the fact that we are completely unrepresented in that product segment and have no customer base, 50,000 is not attainable out of the box."
