Audi: Q3 News

Audi offroader? Get in the Q... - - Source: Autocar

Audi has registered a new series of badges which could give clues to the company’s upcoming SUVs. According to insiders, the German carmaker has recently registered the series Q3-Q8 and SQ3-SQ8. The Q is thought to stand for Quattro, and the S designates high performance.

Audi’s A6-based Pikes Peak SUV is in the final stages of development, and there are also plans for a smaller SUV derived from the long-wheelbase A3 Sportback. It’s thought the Q3 and Q7 badges could be reserved for the two planned SUVs.

However, there’s an outside chance that Audi is simply preparing to re-badge its road cars. This could mean A4 would designate a front-driver, Q4 the all-wheel-drive version and SQ4 the high-performance model.

Audi says it will offer two SUVs for the U.S. market; Q7 to be followed by A4-based model - - By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek

In the next few years, Audi of America will offer two SUVs.

The seven-seat Q7 goes on sale in March 2006. About three years from now, the Q7 will be followed by a smaller SUV based on the A4, Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president of Audi of America, said Sunday.

Audi decided SUVs were a necessity in the U.S. market.

"You cannot be one of the leading players in this market if you do not have an SUV," de Nysschen said. "We probably waited a bit too long here at Audi."

The Q7 will be priced at about $40,000, he said. De Nysschen thinks Audi can sell up to 50,000 of the all-wheel-drive Q7s a year. But sales in 2006 likely will be between 15,000 and 20,000 units, he said.

"Based on the fact that we are completely unrepresented in that product segment and have no customer base, 50,000 is not attainable out of the box."

Audi to build Q5 SUV, Q3 may be next - - By JASON STEIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek

PHOENIX, Arizona, USA – Audi will add a small premium SUV called the Q5 by 2008. The carmaker also is considering an entry-level SUV called the Q3.

...

Hackenberg said Audi is discussing the possibility of adding a Q3 SUV, but has not made a final decision.

If built, the Q3 would be similar in size to the Golf SUV planned for 2007 by Audi parent Volkswagen.

A Q3 would give Audi a three-SUV lineup.

One of the leading car mags is reporting that due to the lawsuit of Infiniti against Audi about the "Q" designation, it has been decided that AUdi can use the Q7 and Q5 designations but not the Q3 designation, had it decided to produce the Q3. In that case, Audi would have to choose a different name for the vehicle.

The very last time he showed up here in Acurazine was a couple years back. Then he was going through some family relationship difficulties, and that he hadn't been in touch with auto news and information like he used to.

It was a big lost to us all from losing Gavriil to this forum, as he always provided really high quality good stuffs.

Post 2012 Audi Q3 Vail

Press release...

• Compact SUV as a themed vehicle at the auto show in Detroit
• New, practical solutions and many individual design highlights
• 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 231 kW (314 hp) and 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft)

Audi is unveiling a themed vehicle of a special kind at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – the Audi Q3 Vail with an output of 231 kW (314 hp). The compact SUV, which is named after the famous winter sports venue in the United States, unites a powerful presence with a sporty lifestyle. The Q3 Vail is a highlight of the young model series that only launched in 2011.

The Audi Q3 Vail represents a new, potential variation on the SUV concept. The themed vehicle has been designed for young fans of winter sports who love skiing or snowboarding. The Audi Q3 Vail is a sporty and robust compact SUV offering many practical attributes, an elegant appearance and individual design highlights.

The themed vehicle is painted in the color developed specially for it – Energy Red. The red paint contains golden pearlescent particles. The add-on body parts are in matt gray quartz-based paint, and underline the vehicle’s robust and rugged appearance. The high-gloss package, a characteristic feature of the model line, enhances the area around the windows with eye-catching elements in aluminum and high-gloss black.

Vertical struts made from aluminum are integrated in the single-frame grille. They extend across the full height of the grille. In the area of the horizontal panel, which carries the license plate on series-built vehicles, they are pulled outwards to striking effect.

The struts exhibit the bicolor theme that the Audi designers developed for the Q3 Vail: their lateral edges are painted in matt quartz-based paint, and the slim front faces have a high-gloss finish.

In the headlights the zones in the lower area of the light-guide elements, which generate the daytime running lights, are painted anthracite. The side air inlets further emphasize the themed vehicle’s powerful appearance; their top areas are covered by solid aluminum panels. The underbody guard beneath the front end is also made from aluminum.

Eyecatching features on the sides of the Q3 Vail are the flared wheel arches and running boards, which Audi is to incorporate into the extensive range of Q3 accessories. The restyled aluminum roof rails are specially designed for transporting skis and snowboards – these two items of sports equipment are made from carbon fiber.

The front roof-rail support integrates compact, energy-efficient, wide-angled LED lights that illuminate the area around the Audi Q3 Vail. They are controlled via buttons in the roof module.

The Audi Q3 Vail is fitted with five-arm wheels in 8.5 J x 20 format. Mirroring the single-frame grille, their visible edges have a high-gloss finish, while the inside areas feature the same matt quartz-based paint. The off-road tires are size 255/45. Track width has increased 40 millimeters (1.57 inches) at the front and rear compared to series-built models, and the body is 30 millimeters (1.18 inches) higher. The themed vehicle also features unique solutions at the back – the two tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are integrated in the diffuser and underbody guard area.

In the interior of the Audi Q3 Vail, three colors offer an ambience of sophistication and sporty elegance – black, gray and red. The headlining is made from titanium gray Alcantara; large parts of the interior, including the carpet, are black. The black, ribbed floor mats are edged with narrow strips of red velvet-finish leather.

An innovative leather/fabric material is used for the upholstery – thin strips of leather just a few tenths of a millimeter wide, are interwoven with yarn. The upholstery features piping with double seams; like the contrasting stitching, the piping is red. Small sections of the upholstery are made from red velvet-finish leather – a hardwearing material that looks similar to nubuck leather at first glance, but in fact has a finer structure. The segments integrated in the door trims are also in red velvet-finish leather, trimmed in steel gray Fine Nappa leather.

The entire instrument panel in the themed vehicle is trimmed in black Fine Nappa leather. Contrasting stitching in titanium gray is an elegant highlight. The leather across the hood of the instrument cluster is steel gray with red contrasting stitching. This color scheme is replicated on the door armrests at the front and rear. The front section of the center tunnel also has a leather trim.

The inlays around the S tronic selector level, at the front of the cockpit and in the doors comprise a three-dimensional stainless steel mesh that requires a complex manufacturing process. The selector lever features a high-gloss black ring and an aluminum badge with a milled “Q3 Vail” signature. The lever gaiter is enhanced by red stitching.

Aluminum takes center stage in the instrument cluster. The most striking elements are the metal dials around the speedometer and rev counter. They were made using a rotary-grinding process. Metal is also used on their rings and around the edges of the control lights. Horizontal bars and small fins give the dials and needle centers a sporty, three-dimensional look. The leather steering wheel features red contrasting stitching and an aluminum trim. Behind it are two large shift paddles for manually controlling the seven-speed S tronic. The footrest and the pedals have thin pads made from rubber. Slits offer a glimpse of the stainless steel beneath the pads.

In some parts of the interior the trims are in high-gloss black – the display and control elements on top of them appear to float. This applies to the area surrounding the driver information system, the zone around the air vents, the periphery of the MMI terminal and the row of switches on the center console. Aluminum inserts give the black switches an air of sophistication. Chrome trims adorn the controls of the air conditioning system; the air vents have black ribs and chrome-trimmed rotary knobs.

The soft keys for the MMI navigation plus system are made from aluminum, while the control terminal benefits visually from narrow strips of the same material. The monitor, which can be folded out manually, has a trim that matches the surface of the instrument panel. The system includes an animation showing the longitudinal and latitudinal tilt angle of the Audi Q3 Vail. In regions that are not included in the map data, the MMI navigation plus system logs the GPS coordinates of the route – for assistance during the return journey.

The interior of the Audi Q3 Vail includes two practical devices for winter sports fans. The side wall of the trunk houses a charging station. It can be used for storing flashlights and charging them inductively at the same time. The same technology is used for the Thermos bottle. It is located in the cup holder between the front seats and is able to chill or warm drinks. Both devices have LEDs that show the current charge level. One attractive extra is that, in addition to LED lighting, the flashlights incorporate an infra-red heating element that can be used for warming your hands or a pair of ski boots.

Another intelligent solution in the themed vehicle is the trunk mat, which has integrated heated seat cushions. The mat can be folded out and laid over the loading lip. This protects the trunk edge while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, and also provides a warm area to sit on when putting on or taking off your ski boots. Small LED spotlights on the inside of the tailgate provide light.

The Audi Q3 Vail features a 2.5-liter five-cylinder TFSI engine with direct injection and turbocharging that generates an output of 231 kW (314 hp) and 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft) of torque from a displacement of 2,480 cc.

The engine’s five cylinders are consecutively numbered; red wrinkled-finish paint has been applied to the cylinder head cover. A panel made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) partially covers the engine, and the air filter is also protected against dirt. There is a decorative trim made from plastic around the engine compartment. The acoustic mat on the inside of the engine hood has a “Q3 Vail” logo embroidered in dark gray.

The power of the turbocharged five-cylinder unit is transferred to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed S tronic transmission. The Audi Q3 Vail accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.5 seconds and continues to a top speed of 262 km/h (162.80 mph).

Post 2012 Audi RS Q3 Concept

Press release...

• Interpretation of a high-performance athlete with 265 kW (360 hp)
• Powerful 5-cylinder unit combines gasoline direct injection with turbocharging
• Acceleration to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.2 seconds and top speed of 265 km/h (164.66 mph)

At Auto China 2012 in Beijing, Audi is presenting a themed vehicle based on the Q3 – the RS Q3 concept. It interprets the character of the compact SUV in a very special way – systematically dynamic.

The blue painted Audi RS Q3 concept is a vehicle based on the theme of thrilling dynamic performance. Its engine, a 2.5 TFSI with 265 kW (360 hp) of power, and its body – lowered about 25 mm (0.98 inches) and widened with sharp visual details – explore the potential of the Q3 model series in a new way.

Brushed and polished aluminum trim frames the Audi RS Q3 concept’s single-frame radiator grille. Its black grille insert exhibits a new geometry – the honeycombs are slightly offset to one another deeper inside, creating a distinct three-dimensional effect. The lower area of the grille integrates another sculpted feature – a silver quattro signature. The headlights are slightly tinted; inside them, some chrome parts are dark or covered by panels of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP).

The bumper was redesigned; there are now powerful edges around the outer air intakes. They are subdivided into two segments – the inner sections have honeycomb screen inserts, while their outer sections, made of CFRP, have a smooth funnel shape. The front spoiler is also made of CFRP. Its lower section is matt black. The entire lower section of the bumper is coated with blue clearcoat paint.

The same combination of black and blue tinted areas is repeated on the sides of the Audi RS Q3 concept – on the trim strips of the doors and sills and on the add-on parts of the wheel housings. The door mirror housings consist of black CFRP, while matt aluminum trim frames the side windows. The roof spoiler runs a long way towards the rear; its middle section has been slightly shortened compared to its outer sections. It is painted in the body color Ordos Blue – a matt blue with a slight yellow tint.

At the rear, the lower bumper section has a sporty and angular style. The diffuser insert, which integrates the two large elliptical tailpipes in typical RS look, has been shifted far upward. Here too, Audi designers chose a combination of blue clearcoat and black CFRP. The rear lights and auxiliary lights in the bumper are tinted in anthracite and are made of clear glass.

Blue and black: the interior

In the interior of the Audi RS Q3 concept, which gets plenty of light through a glass sunroof, cool black is the dominant color – on the roofliner, floor carpet, floor mats, leather-upholstered instrument panel and on large areas of the seat upholstery, which consists of Fine Nappa leather. Dark blue Alcantara is used as a contrasting element on the seat covers.

The contrasting blue color is used in an inventive way in the CFRP decorative panels – the panel material was produced by weaving brilliant blue luminescent glass fibers into it. The steering wheel has large control stalks made of CFRP, which are framed by aluminum accents. Most of the wheel is covered with black Velvet leather – a leather that gives the hands a secure grip and repels dirt very well. In the door trim panels, there are surfaces in blue Alcantara.

The inside door handle has a perforated lightweight construction look as in every RS model. In the tachometer, Chinese characters replace the usual Arabic numerals. RS Q3 badges adorn the instrument cluster, the seatbacks, door sill plates and floor mats.

The styling of the engine compartment is also extremely sporty in appearance. A layered-carbon trim panel covers the area around the five-cylinder engine that sports a red valve cover, and two laterally arranged ventilation screens feed air to the engine. As is the practice in car racing, the cylinder numbers are marked on their spark plug covers. An aluminum housing holds the open sports air filter, and the filtered air tube is made of stainless steel.

Powerful: the drivetrain

The extremely powerful 2.5 TFSI in the RS Q3 concept combines two classic Audi technologies – gasoline direct injection and turbocharging. From 2,480 cc of engine displacement, it generates 265 kW (360 hp) of power. The car catapults itself from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.2 seconds, and its propulsive force takes it to a top speed of 265 km/h (164.66 mph).

A seven-speed S tronic transfers the forces of the sonorous 2.5 TFSI to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Generally, it directs these forces almost exclusively to the front wheels. When slip is detected there, it can redistribute forces to the rear axle via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch with electronic control – instantaneously and variably.

The alloy wheels of the Audi RS Q3 concept continue the dynamic RS Q styling and have the dimensions 8.5 J x 20. The front surfaces are high-gloss, while the sides are sandblasted. The tire size of 255/30 is not exactly typical for an SUV, but certainly for an RS model.

Post 2014 Audi RS Q3

Press release...

The Audi RS Q3 is the first RS model in the successful Q family. It combines high everyday practicality with dynamic performance. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) takes just 5.2 seconds, and top speed is 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

This impressive performance comes courtesy of an award-winning, high-performance engine. Beginning in 2010, an international panel of automotive journalists has named the 2.5 TFSI “International Engine of the Year” in its class four years in a row. The turbocharged unit with direct injection delivers 228 kW (310 hp) from a displacement of 2,480 cc; its maximum torque is 420 Nm (309.78 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 5,200 rpm. Both figures are unmatched in the RS Q3's class. A seven-speed S tronic and quattro all-wheel drive, which uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, transfers the power to the axles as needed.

The Audi RS Q3 offers impressively dynamic and stable handling. The RS sport suspension lowers the body of the compact, high-performance SUV by 25 milli-meters (0.98 in). The front brake discs feature a wave design, and 19-inch wheels are standard. Also standard is the Audi drive select dynamics system, which influences the valve control of the exhaust system as well as the characteristic of the accelerator and the electromechanical power steering.

Maybe i am too used to dual or quad with all the RS/AMG/M lines.

Single exhaust outlet just looks weak for those models.

Audi is using the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to introduce the North American market to its upcoming Q3 compact luxury crossover.

Scheduled to arrive in Audi showrooms in the fall of 2014 as a 2015 model, the Q3 will rival vehicles like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

"Coming off the recent A3 family announcement we are now for the first time entering into the premium compact class of SUVs with the introduction of the Audi Q3 into our line-up," said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. "Our growing SUV family will now offer three distinct products in the premium SUV category; and like the successful Q5 and Q7, the Q3 will continue with the established standards they started with regards to utility, technology, craftsmanship and performance."

The Q3 will come standard with a 200 horsepower, 207 lb-ft of torque version of Audi's TFSI 2.0L four-cylinder engine. Base models will come equipped with front-wheel drive, but Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system will be on the options list. Regardless of drive, the Q3 will shift via a six-speed Tiptronic transmission.

Other standard features will include a panoramic sunroof with power retractable sunshade, xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, leather upholstery and heated front seats.

No pricing information has been announced, but look for the 2015 Audi Q3 to carry a starting price near that of the $30,900 BMW X1.

Oh the confusion when Q3 buyers head over to the Infiniti lots to look at the Q3.....and find out all the Q's are there....just not the Q you were looking for.

The Q3 configurator is online. A loaded out Q3 2.0T Prestige is $40K.

But, I don't know what version of the 2.0T it's using ... It's rated at 200/207 which seems like the old 2.0T and not the one that's in the new A3 and GTI.

But, a loaded Q3 for $40K isn't a bad deal for a small SUV when all things are considered.

It looks like a little Q8

The Audi Q3 is very much due for a total redesign, and it looks like Audi has one ready to go. New spy shots reveal the car with no camouflage. It shows the compact luxury crossover SUV looks very much like a tiny version of the Q8 flagship SUV.

The strongest Q8 connection is in the front fascia. The new Q3 has a version of the big SUV's octagonal grille. It also has the vertical bars that intersect the horizontal slats. Both of these styling cues separate the SUVs from Audi's cars. An additional connection between both SUVs is the new Q3's little triangular extension downward on each headlight. They're smaller than those on the Q8, but confirm the family connection. They also look a bit like fangs.

Along the side, the Q3 has a similar window treatment to the Q8, specifically the small pieces of glass aft of the rear doors. Where the little Q3 starts to come into its own is in its more aggressive bodywork. There are tall creases with sharp downward angles over each wheel arch that make it look muscular and chiseled. It's less subtle and elegant than the big Q8.

At the back, the Q3 is actually pretty conservative. It doesn't get any fancy LED taillights like those on the Q8. Really, it looks like an evolution of the current model. The lights are a bit more slender with narrower angles. The exhaust is now integrated with the rear bumper with geometric outlets. But otherwise it looks like an updated version of the outgoing model.

We were expecting to see the production Q3 revealed this year, and based on this prototype, that still seems like a strong possibility. It would certainly seem likely to go on sale sometime next year at the very least.

I don't like the grille (assuming it's final), but the rest looks good. It's just a bit small.
