2010 Audi A8 caught moonlighting as a Mitsubishi [Spied again]
Posted By Drew Johnson On August11 @ 9:06 am
Audi wants you to think this prototype is the biggest, most expensive Mitsubishi you’ve ever seen! We know better, however, as our spy photographers caught this lightly camouflaged 2010 Audi A8 cruising the highways of Arizona.
The 2010 A8 will utilize Audi’s new, super-flexible “MLP” platform. This is the same chassis used for the A4, A5 and the upcoming A7. The A8 should see extended use of aluminum and magnesium in an effort to keep the large sedan’s weight down. While our photos show a “regular” wheelbase A8, you can expect Audi to continue making a longer “A8L” model as well.
The 4.2L FSI V8 motor will continue on under the hood of the A8 with a few revisions and modest power bump. Whether Audi might use the supercharged V6 currently found in the A6 and S5 remains to be seen.
The A8 will also feature the newest version of Quattro which features torque vectoring. This distributes drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability.
Production is slated to start in the 3rd quarter of 2010 at the Neckarsulm factory in Germany.

Audi to unveil 2011 A8 on Nov. 30
After pulling its flagship sedan from the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi will finally unveil the 2011 A8 at Design Miami on November 30. A few days after its official reveal, the 2011 Audi A8 will make its first public appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

With a redesigned BMW 7-Series and updated Mercedes S-Class now on the market, the timing for a new Audi A8 couldn’t be better. On display later this week at the LA Auto Show, the new A8 made its debut Monday evening at a special event in Miami, a few months after being pulled from the the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Note: We’re awaiting high-res photography. Please stand by.
The 2010 A8 utilizes Audi’s new, super-flexible “MLP” platform. This is the same chassis used for the A4, A5 and the upcoming A7. The A8 sees extended use of aluminum and magnesium in an effort to keep the large sedan’s weight down.
Audi has aimed the A8 sedan to be the sportiest in the segment, and boasts that its lower center of gravity, helped by the lowest roofline height of any German rival, helps to deliver just that. Audi manages to retain that claim despite growing the 2011 A8 just over two inches in length, width and wheelbase dimensions over the previous model, as well as roughly one inch in additional height.
The 4.2-liter FSI V8 motor will continue on under the hood of the A8 with a few revisions and modest power bump. The 372 horsepower unit also promises reduced fuel consumption by 15 percent. Coupled to the motor is a new eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission with manual mode. Manual gear selection is available via steering wheel rockers or by using the regular gear selection lever.
The A8 will also feature the newest version of Quattro, which features torque vectoring. This distributes drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability. An optional sport differential distributes power between the rear wheels for optimal performance under hard cornering.
The A8’s multimedia interface (MMI) combines the standard (in the U.S.) navigation system with a touchpad. MMI touch enables the driver to control many functions intuitively such as inputting the navigation destination by writing the letters on the pad with the touch of a finger.
The MMI system can recognize complex scenarios and make anticipatory decisions to assist the driver. The new technologies include a night vision assist with marking of detected pedestrians, the Audi pre-sense safety system, as well as a speed limit display.
Another high-end solution on board the new A8 is full LED headlights, which use light emitting diodes for all light functions. They give the luxury sedan an unmistakable appearance even in daylight and even more so after the fall of darkness.
Combining the high-tech MMI system and LED headlights, Audi’s navigation unit predicts the road ahead and adjusts the light pattern accordingly. This function will enable special output in highway settings, and even activate a cornering light for wider-angle illumination when entering an intersection.

+1 on the wheels but I like the rest of the car. I'm interested in seeing the interior changes from the previous generation.

its pretty efficient for such large size car.

The new A8 glides calmly, sleekly and quietly through the wind. The 4.2 FSI version has a drag coefficient of only 0.26, with the frontal area measuring 2.41 m2 (25.94 square ft). Low lift coefficients at the front and rear axles ensure confident stability at highway speeds. The luxury sedan also once again leads its class in wind noise comfort.

I don't think that this new design is going to help them catch up to S class, 7 series and LS sales . It's too plain and not very emotional. The LEDs are nice but not really enough to spice up an overall bland design.

I'm not impressed. It looks like a bigger, awkward A4 with massive LED DRLs. It looks like Audi might be going to route of making all of their sedans look exactly the same, excluding size.

Are those LEDs even production? I saw another pic with an LED strip and Xenon night lights, that makes more sense.

surprised that it has an integrated rear lip. IMO, that design aspect is way too playful to belong on a saloon. nor do you want the saloon being mistaken for the A4 from the rear...the integrated lip should really be designated for the smaller, sporty cars.
that said, the overall body evolution is great, but expected. although their two key elements of unique LEDs and rear valance lip may not be 100% successful in placing the car under the category of "sport sedan".

I agree...it does not seem as nice as the previous gens.
I'm a bit disappointed. However, that interior is still just gorgeous...

That's what happens when you make award winning designs that are applauded by the whole industry: you assume anything that you are going to make is going to be a success.

Wow they sure didnt put much thought into this did they.
I mean the interior isnt that much different than the old. Not that its a bad thing, guess I was just expecting them to out-do themselves.

So I guess the trick LEDs are the real thing, they're both high and low beams.
I'm not really excited by the rest of the car...

They cycle through the various LED modes in this video:

Also the LCD inside the instrument cluster is pretty cool, it's the one from the spy shot posted in the A4 thread. I guess they tested it on the A4.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
Weird lights. I think they should've differentiated the rear from the rest of the line a little more.
I think I like the A4 and A6 better, actually.
