Especially now with the new 2.0T putting out over 250 lb-ft of torque, who needs the 3.2.

The 2.0T in the '09 A4 however is producing 211hp, 258 lb-ft.
They are both listed as TFSI motors, my guess is they are keeping the power down in the A3 to prevent decreased sales of the A4 since it has more power.

The 2.0T in the '09 A3 is currently producing the same power as last year, approx 200hp, 207 lb-ft., and the same as what's in my '08 A4 Avant.

Completely agree on your last claim.

Funny that Audi is dropping the V6 for those cars and yet Acura is now going to offer a V6 on the TSX.
Either Audi is making a bad move or Acura is always one step behind on everything.
Granted TSX has no turbo..

Will Americans accept the idea that displacement doesn't determine a car's value?

The sizzle in the Steak
Sure they are apples and oranges....but the 2.0T direct injection engine that produces 211hp, 258 lb-ft.....with better mpg than the Acura V6...is the best of both worlds...power and efficient. Sure it may not have the top-end bhp...but the torque numbers far outweigh that deficiency.
Now if Honda would put a turbo 4 in one of their vehicles....

I can't tell you how many times I had to explain to people why I wanted to go from a v6 to the i4 in the Avant as well as buy an integra that also has an i4. They just didn't get it.
The media has brainwashed people into thinking v6/v8 good, high horsepower good. Now we're on the same downward brainwashing trend with econoboxes and hybrids.

I guess Audi is dropping the V6 from their A5 as well....

Report: Audi A3 hybrid coming in 2012
From Motor Authority...
http://www.motorauthority.com/report...g-in-2012.html
Hybrid versions of all sorts of cars - even sports cars like the Nissan 370Z - are in the works or on their way, and now Audi is adding to the list with reports of an A3 hybrid confirmed for production. The hybrid hatch is expected to use an Audi-adapted version of Volkswagen's TwinDrive hybrid powertrain.
The TwinDrive project will be at the heart of a future hybrid Golf, and is also being trialled in a Seat Leon plug-in as well. The TwinDrive system produces about 40hp (30kW) - half the power of the TwinDrive system in the concept Golf revealed last year, and meager by U.S. standards, but the system, once depleted, is backed up by either small petrol or diesel four-cylinders rated at a more typical 105hp (78kW) or more, according to Autocar. Top speed will reach about 105mph (168km/h).
Inside the TwinDrive system lies a 12kWh battery pack of lithium-ion batteries that should be enough to give the car a 30mi (48km) electric-only range. That's enough to rival the Volt plug-in hybrid, and at the Audi's higher market point, hints at a price closer to $50,000.
Efficiency for the combo will be very high, with estimates placing the car's combined electric and regular operating at more than 113mpg. The car is expected to reach commercial buyers in 2012 with retail sales sometime after that, though Audi hasn't yet confirmed any dates.

What Would Don Draper Do?
pardon my ignorance, but other than external features (like LEDs), what difference is there between the A3 and GTI? i love the GTI's interior, so even if the audi has a "better" looking interior or quality, i think it's a wash. but in terms of engine and/or performance....

The Audi probably has a nicer interior and quattro. Other than that, I'm not sure what the difference is ... Other than about $10k in MSRP when fully loaded. Unless I'm missing something, I'd have a hard time paying the premium for AWD no matter how much I hate FWD.
My Audi bias shows through, yet again.

Now if you're talking R32 vs. A3, I'd definitely go A3.

see, i love the interior of the GTI, so other than, maybe, quality of the parts in the audi, the interior is a wash between the two.
thanks. i was just curious as to what justifies the extra $ for the A3.

As some of you know, we almost purchased the A3, but moved on the A4 instead, mostly because you couldn't get quattro, and moving up to the A4 there's the boost in storage space.
Aside from those two factor's, if I had to choose, I think I still would have purchased an A3 simply compared to the GTI simply because I loved the exterior look of the A3 more than the GTI. But I certainly wouldn't complain if I owned a GTI 5 door.
Perhaps that could be the wifey's next car.

Audi announces diesel A3 TDI for U.S. market
Audi says it’s bringing another diesel-powered 50-state model to the United States later this year – this time it’s a 2.0-liter TDI-equipped A3 hatchback. Audi announced the new model earlier today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the automaker says that U.S. sales will begin early in 2010.
The A3 TDI is powered by a 2.0-liter clean diesel – the same motor under the hood of the VW Jetta TDI – hooked up to Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch transmission. It’ll only be available with front-wheel-drive. The 2.0 TDI puts out 140-horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque.
Audi says the A3 TDI’s 2.0-liter doesn’t require any after-treatment system and that it’ll be capable of over 40 mpg on the highway.
The A3 TDI will be well equipped – Sirius satellite radio, leather seats and 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard. Expect pricing to be a bit higher than a similarly-equipped A3 2.0T gas-engine model.

OH my ... and only a $1200 premium over the 2.0T FWD. It's up on Audi's site right now. Shows a 2.0TDi with FWD for $31,950 for a Premium Plus.
But if the quattro is like $34k and you get the sport, comfort, convenience, cold weather, and next think you know you have a $40k A3.
Bonkers.

I fucked that up
Yes, it's only FWD (which sucks). So a 2.0TDi with Titanium Sport, Nav, Cold, Comfort, Convenience is like $40k.
Would buy that instead of a Volt 10k over.

And yea, sucks it's only FWD. It's just like when lots of people asked for the 2.0T with quattro. So Audi delivered, but then took away the 6spd configuration on that trim.

an A3 sedan would be an awesome entry level vehicle for Audi. With the Jetta being offered at $17K base right now, a $24K base price for an A3 sedan would be perfect step up. And if it looks as good as the B8 (which has grown on me a lot now that I've seen more of them on the road), it'll sell. The A3 already sells damn well in the U.S. considering the U.S. isn't a big wagon market in the first place.

Downsizing is an element of Audi’s efficiency strategy to which it is absolutely committed. The A3 model line will soon introduce yet another turbocharged petrol engine featuring lower displacement. It unites maximum performance with minimum consumption.
Designed from scratch, the new 1.2 TFSI generates 105PS from a displacement of 1,197 cm3. And as is typical of Audi, turbocharging and direct petrol injection once again work in harmony to maximize efficiency. Thanks to an aluminum crankcase, this four-cylinder engine weighs just 89.5 kilograms; this remarkably low weight also boosts its efficiency.
The 1.2 TFSI has been optimized to minimize friction. Eight valves are actuated by a single camshaft. A common-rail system injects the fuel. An electric control valve operates the turbocharger’s wastegate valve; boost pressure builds up spontaneously and scavenging losses drop.
This compact engine generates 175 Nm (129.07 lb.-ft.) of torque between just 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. It propels the three-door A3 1.2 TFSI from 0 to 62mph in 11.1 seconds; the Sportback, in 11.3 seconds. Both versions reach a top speed of 118mph and can return up to 51.3mpg (combined cycle), while emitting just 127 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The new engine will initially be paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission

Audi RS3
The next generation Audi RS3 is coming, it's just a matter of when. But the bigger question is what's going to power Audi's hottest hatch when it arrives on European shores.
Considering that the A3 on which it's based shares the same platform (PQ35) as the TT RS, there's a good chance that Audi could swap the coupe's turbocharged 2.5-liter FSI inline-five into the engine bay. Unchanged, the five-pot would put out 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque to either a six-speed manual or S Tronic dual-clutch gearbox, and naturally, power will be delivered to all four wheels with a similar 40:60 front-to-rear torque split.
Our recent batch of spy shots show a slightly modified A3, complete with a RS-ified fascia, lower stance and massive brakes front and rear, although the single, twin-tipped exhaust (and grilled-mounted badge) could be mistaken for a standard S3. More interestingly is the rear wing, which remained fixed during part of the RS3's 'Ring run, but was canted upwards around another section. It could be some kind of adaptive air brake or it could've just come undone while whipping around the track.
Regardless, since Audi doesn't offer an S3 in the U.S., there's little chance of the RS3 making it to the States anytime soon

Why would they put out a new RS3 now when there's a brand new A3 coming out next year or so?
