I would love to see the 1.5T with a 6MT in a Fit Si. I would definitely pick one up as a station car.

American Honda Reports Sales Increases for Both Honda and Acura Brands Despite Winter Chill

Feb 1, 2019
.
  • American Honda posts 1.5% sales increase despite late January "polar vortex." Trucks set new Jan. record
  • Honda brand gains 0.8% as CR-V gains nearly 20% and Accord continues to set pace in midsize segment
  • Honda trucks set new January sales record, rising 2.4%
  • Acura brand starts 2019 with strong 9.6% January climb, with trucks gaining 18%
  • Acura RDX jumps 41% to set another new monthly sales record
.
"Our Honda and Acura dealers delivered a strong January and have put us on course for a fast start in 2019, despite extreme weather conditions throughout much of the country during the last week of the month," said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of the American Honda Automobile Division. "While solid sales of our light-truck offerings continue, our balanced results across other segments of our business further showcase real consumer demand beyond trucks and SUVs."

Honda

Sales Highlights

Continuing sales momentum from late 2018 led the Honda brand to a new January truck sales record—a strong start for 2019 despite severe winter weather that suppressed car shopping in the last week of January. CR-V was the biggest gainer, and Accord had a strong month as well.
  • Fresh from an all-time sales record month in December, CR-V gained a robust 19.8% on sales of 29,152.
  • Accord finished January up 6.3% continuing momentum that saw it lead the mid-size segment in retail sales over the entire second half of 2018.
  • Civic topped 21,000 units in sales to continue its dominant performance, as America’s best retail-selling sedan in 2018 begins its quest to lead the compact segment in retail sales for a 10th straight year.

Model Notes

Production of the new Insight in Indiana and Accord Hybrid in Ohio helped the Honda brand to all-time record production and sales of electrified vehicles in 2018.

Civic finished 2018 as America's top retail-selling car and is the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. millennial, multicultural and first-time new vehicle buyers.

Acura

Sales Highlights

Acura brand sales withstood the polar vortex in late January to post a 9.6% gain for the month, with RDX leading the brand with a 41% increase.
  • RDX continued its record sales march unabated, setting a new January benchmark with 4,172 vehicles sold for a gain of 40.9%. It was the 8th straight record sales month for RDX.
  • Acura light trucks just missed an all-time January record on sales of more than 7,100 units.
  • ILX sales were up 22.7%, just ahead of the start of the marketing campaign for Acura’s redesigned gateway model, refreshed for 2019.

Model Notes

Acura was the only top-5 luxury brand with positive retail gains in 2018 and carries this momentum into 2019 thanks to a strong month from RDX and ILX.

The Acura brand was born in the U.S. and with 5 out of Acura's 6 models built in Ohio, about 99% of all Acura sales are made in America.

Honda plans to front-load UK production ahead of Brexit

January 31, 2019

TOKYO (Reuters) - Braced for a possible logistical nightmare when Britain leaves the European Union in March, Honda Motor Co Ltd said on Friday it was preparing to front-load some production at its plant in the country to ship overseas or build up inventories.

The Japanese automaker, which produces the Civic hatchback model at its factory in Swindon, southwest England, may face possible supply chain, production and distribution issues if Britain’s borders are disrupted from March 29, when the country is due to leave the EU.

“To avoid any possible disruptions at the end of March ... we’re making a number of preparations including front-loading some production to ship or step up inventories,” Honda Chief Operating Officer Seiji Kuraishi told reporters in Tokyo.

Carmakers in Britain have warned that their factories, which rely on the constant delivery of parts to enter production cycles, would be severely impaired if Britain leaves without a trade deal, forcing the need for customs checks at borders.

Q3 PROFIT KNOCKED BY DISCOUNTING

Announcing its third-quarter results on Friday, Japan’s third-biggest automaker said increased discounting on its popular CR-V SUV crossover pushed operating profit down 40 percent in October-December, while quality-related costs and currency volatility also stung its bottom line.

Honda posted profit of 170.1 billion yen ($1.56 billion) for the quarter, tumbling from 284.5 billion yen a year ago and undermining a median estimate for 208.8 billion yen from 10 analysts polled by Refinitiv.

Kuraishi said the company had increased discounts on 2018 model CR-Vs sold in North America, where inventories had built up towards the end of the year, to make room for the current year model.

Such discounting helped boost sales in North America to 498,000 units during the period, up from 491,000 a year earlier. While it managed to buck the trend of slowing demand in the United States, higher incentives slashed profitability in the region.

Honda’s global automobile sales came in at 1.41 million vehicles in October-December, versus 1.34 million a year earlier, boosted by rising sales at home and in Asia.

In China, another key market where sales have also cooled after years of growth, Honda sold around 1.43 million vehicles in 2018, down slightly on the previous year. While sales in the past few months have held up against an overall market slowdown, Honda was stung earlier in the year by a quality issue with its Civic sedan, the CR-V SUV crossover and other popular models.

Kuraishi said that he hoped to keep increasing sales in China this year, even as automakers in the world’s largest auto market brace for a tough 2019. Demand in China has cooled following years of strong growth as the country’s growing middle class snapped up new cars.

And that pretty much has to do w/ China where Hyundai is operating at 50% capacity (stated at the time that it was foolish to cave in to Beijing's demand to build a 2nd new plant in order to get the original one approved).

Also, US Genesis sales having been artificially depressed due to the licensing issue hasn't helped, but sales are on the upswing as more states and dealerships come online.

Meanwhile, over in Europe, H/K continue to increase their lead over the other Asian automakers where Honda continues to flounder.

And the G70 does a clean sweep of the major auto awards - NAIAS NACOTY, MOT COT and C/D 10Best.

W/ the Kona also getting NAIAS NAUOTY and Hyundai being awarded Top Gear's Manufacturer of the Year.

Haven't gone anywhere - still around to correct your factual mistakes and put things into the proper context.

i dont know where to start. atleast you admit hyundai mistake in China.
Europe has fleet sales and bargain basement small cars. Honda is not that much interested in that kind of market. honda only reexport from Swindon Plant in UK.
Genesis sales at upswing. your lies are caught so soon that its not funny anymore. you refusing to admit Hyundai despite all those investments in V8, RWD and Germanic designers is still a loser.
it is pathetic how many stand alone Gensis started?

https://autoweek.com/article/car-new...ers-and-losers
Among other luxury brands, volume dropped 14 percent at Mercedes-Benz, 4.8 percent at BMW, 1.8 percent at Audi and 24 percent at Genesis but jumped 13 percent at Porsche, 5.2 percent at Volvo, 18 percent at Jaguar and 15 percent at Land Rover.

only with two cars they have confidence of expanding dealership network. this Genesis is joke.

1986 – Acura sales total 52,869 units in "year one", with 150 dealerships serving the top 50 metropolitan markets within 36 states
August 1987 – Acura places first in the annual J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Survey, an unprecedented finish for a nameplate in its first year. The Acura dealer service score was the highest ever recorded in the history of the survey.

Admit what?

Stated it at the time that it was a mistake to expand and hence, be overly reliant on the China market - so I've been saying that at the very start.

Europe has fleet sales and bargain basement small cars. Honda is not that much interested in that kind of market. honda only reexport from Swindon Plant in UK
And what? Honda doesn't sell small cars like the Fit/Jazz, HR-V, Civic and CR-V?

One of H/K biggest sellers in Europe are the Tucson and Sportage CUVs, along w/ the i30 and Ceed.

Actually, H/K don't do much of fleet/rental sales in Europe - they're actually looking to grow their corporate/business sales, but need to add hybrids to lower the CO2 tax rate.

For example, in France.

Kia's privates sales % is 68%.

Which is actually better than Toyota's (67%) and one of the highest overall.

P+B (private + business) - Kia is at 76%.

Hyundai is at 71% for P+B.

For comparison's sake - Lexus is at 74% (of which only 44% is private; 30% being business).

As for Honda - 49% P and 3% B for a total of 52% for P+B.

So not only does Honda sell far less than H/K in France (and the rest of Europe), their proportion of P+B sales is also (significantly) lower.

Last year, H/K sold 1,038,154 vehicles in the EU countries.

Honda sold 135,584.

Genesis sales at upswing. your lies are caught so soon that its not funny anymore. you refusing to admit Hyundai despite all those investments in V8, RWD and Germanic designers is still a loser.

Genesis sales:

Nov. - 417
Dec.- 614
Jan.- 1,224

If this isn't an upswing, don't know what would constitute as one.

Genesis dealerships started to get licensing approval in Nov.

As of end of Jan. only about a 3rd are operational w/ major markets like CA, TX and PA still waiting.

Even despite the hampered retail situation, the G80 pretty handily outsold the Japanese competition.

G80 - 473
GS - 298
Q70 - 235
RLX - 119

Once the retail network is worked out, sales of the G80 should go back over the 1k mark and go higher when the new model launches.

And as I have already stated, the Korean market is a major driver.

Monthly - sells about 3k G80s and 2k of the G90/K9.

For the next gen models, the platform and powertrains will also be shared w/ the GV80 CUV and likely a Kia lux CUV.

The powertrains are also shared w/ the G70, Stinger, the GV70 and likely a Kia variant of that.

Care to be wrong (and grossly misinformed/ignorant) about anything else?

"We're off to a good start in 2019 with notable gains for both cars and light trucks, bolstered by the arrival of our all-new Passport SUV," said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of the American Honda Automobile Division. "Our terrific product lineup is helping grow sales in all key segments of our business and we are achieving this success by maintaining a disciplined approach to supply and incentive spending."

BRAND REPORT
Sales HighlightsHonda maintained a strong sales pace in February, with core models Accord and CR-V posting gains and HR-V setting a record, while the brand-new Passport SUV had its first full month of sales.
  • Despite on-going sedan market headwinds, Accord gained 2.5% on sales of 20,254 units, continuing its retail sales leadership in the midsize segment.
  • HR-V sales rose 4.4% in February on sales of 7,093 units, a new February record and its best month since the full impact of a flood that stopped production for four months last year.
  • CR-V gained 1.7% in February, cresting 26,000 units for the month, while Pilot posted a strong month with sales of nearly 11,000 units.
  • Sales of electrified models (over 4,500 units) remained strong with Insight topping 1,500 units to lead industry sales for dedicated hybrid models.

Model Notes

Honda began 2019 as the retail #1 passenger car brand in America, with Accord the retail best-selling midsize sedan for the 4th straight month and Civic entering its 4th year as America's retail best-selling car.

CR-V continues as the retail #1 CUV in America, while approaching nearly a 20% share in segment.

BRAND REPORT
Sales HighlightsAcura continued to gain traction as sales climbed more than 11% for the month. Acura trucks, up 24%, set a new February record. Sedans remained strong as ILX and TLX continue to outperform their segments in retail sales.
  • RDX sales jumped 31.8% in February on sales of 4,965 units, a February record and the 9th consecutive month of record sales.
  • MDX had a robust month, gaining 14.9% on sales of 3,833 units.
  • ILX sales were up 15.8%, despite inventory issues related to the ramp-up of the refreshed 2019 model.

Model Notes

Coming off its best year ever, the new RDX has continued as the #1 retail-seller in segment, the #2 retail-selling luxury SUV and the #3 model in all of luxury.

Acura began 2019 with retail sales up 10% while key competitors experienced declines.

Acura just needs to become an SUV & crossover brand, and dump the rest. Keep the NSX as the supercar for namesake and tech trickle, and then develop an all-electric sedan to compete in that emerging market. The rest is garbage and a waste.

The current sedans were developed under the "smart luxury" theme. Let's see what the 2020 TLX is like. If it's like the RDX inside and out and comes with an optional 3.0T V6, I think it will be very attractive.

Unhappy Sales Reports

https://www.freep.com/story/money/ca...ca/2980093002/

Monthly auto sales reports likely to fade away

Jamie L. LaReau, Detroit Free Press Published 11:35 a.m. ET March 1, 2019 | Updated 4:44 p.m. ET March 1, 2019In the summer of 2017, General Motors executives started questioning a decades-old industry norm: reporting vehicle sales every month. They ditched the practice in April 2018, choosing to report sales only on a quarterly basis."We knew that a lot of our competitors would watch to see what our experience would be and if we’d stick to our guns," said GM spokesman Jim Cain. "We always expected they’d follow."In fact, Ford last month switched to quarterly reports.Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the foreign automakers continue to report each month. On Friday, they reported retail new vehicles sales for February, with FCA sales down 2 percent from a year before. Subaru and Kia/Hyundai showed gains; Toyota, Volkswagen, Nissan and Honda showed losses from a year before.

Every 10 days?

GM says quarterly reports more accurately reflect market trends than shorter-term snapshots.“The media and economists are trying to get a view on exactly how the market is functioning the day of sales reporting, and we don’t have enough data to conclude everything,” said Jonathan Smoke, chief economists for Cox Automotive. “We won’t know how much of those results are due to fleet sale. Or how much of that was incentivized. In the future, I foresee everyone moving away from monthly reports." Quarterly reports will allow analysts to dig in to spot real market trends, said Smoke. But if more carmakers switch to quarterly sales, “You have to rely on third-party and government data. So we’ll have more uncertainty and the automakers will lose some control over the dialogue of how their business is performing.”

High interest in numbers

The idea of reporting car sales every month versus every three months still has value, other analysts say.“There is a lot of interest in these (monthly) numbers,” said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of industry analysis for Edmunds. “We live in a world where there is so much information that people want more information versus less.”In an ironic twist, it was GM that initially provoked short-term car-sales reporting in the 1920s. Then, longtime GM Chairman Alfred Sloan devised the idea of compiling dealers' sales every 10 days and reporting it to the public.
From the 1920s through the 1980s automakers reported car sales every 10 days. Here new cars fill the top deck of M/V HIGHWAY 16, formerly USS LST 393 circa 1970. (Photo: Sand Products Corporation)
"How would anyone take on a task that massive when people were still using adding machines and slide rulers?" marveled GM's Cain. But it served a purpose at that time. GM nearly collapsed then because of a lack of information about sales and inventory, so it needed the reports. Soon, other carmakers followed, and the 10-day sales report became the norm for nearly 60 years. Then on Dec. 1, 1990, Chrysler cited cost and the hassle of tabulating the numbers every two weeks as one reason to switch to a 30-day schedule. It also said the short 10-day reporting periods exaggerated Asian automakers' gains in the U.S. market.Soon, others followed and 30-day sales reports became the norm.

GM tunes out noise

By 2017, GM considered the massive time it took to compile its sales stats each month and recognized that the results did not significantly move the stock to provide long-term shareholder value, said Cain. GM looked at the airline and retail industries, too, as examples of moving to quarterly reports years ago. Walmart changed its sales reporting in 2009, for example."We found in the first hour of trading, you’d see much larger price changes which would smooth themselves out over the course of the day, so we were creating that short-term volatility simply by the way the industry was releasing the sales," said Cain. Also, the auto industry is highly competitive and volatile. Numerous factors can drive sales in either direction in any given month. For example, a severe storm could wipe out dealer inventory, eroding sales that month. Cain said 30-day sales reports make it "difficult to see through all the noise and see of what the real trends are."But on a quarterly basis, those short-term fluctuations that influence sales tend to smooth themselves out, Cain said.

Ford's move

For example, new car sales are typically slow in January and February, but tend to spike in March, making the first-quarter report more complete. For that reason, other automakers might follow GM's lead, but others, especially smaller ones such as Subaru, might not because a monthly sales report allows them to, "get into the news cycle more frequently,” said Caldwell.Ford made its decision to move to quarterly sales calls in January, saying the move was what was "best for our business," said Said Deep, Ford spokesman.Ford still provides its monthly sales numbers to some of the data houses, but will only host an analyst and media sales call once a quarter, said Deep. The decision "was a result of trying to smooth out our sales data. Monthly sales can be more volatile," Deep said. "The information is still out there for those who need it on a monthly basis, we're just having our calls on a quarterly basis."Ford's decision made sense, said Thomas King, senior vice president at JD Power’s Data and Analytics Division. King said he wasn’t surprised that Ford followed GM.“Typically, if one makes the shift, it makes it much easier for others to follow," said King. "There’s a lot of media coverage on the stock prices of those companies, so their focus was on how the monthly sales reports impacted the stock prices. The open question is will others follow?”

Icy February sales

Stephanie Brinley, IHS Markit principal analyst, said in considering a switch to quarterly sales reporting, each automaker has to decide what works best for its metrics and “the stories they want to tell.” But she's in favor of the quarterly reports, saying the bigger picture prevents misreading market trends and not getting monthly numbers doesn't negatively impact her analysis.“I don’t think we’re hurt by some of them going to quarterly,” said Brinley. “For the year that GM has done it, I don’t think we understand the company less well by going to quarterly.”Meanwhile, February new-vehicle sales for those that did report came in cooled from 2016's record level of 17.5 million vehicles as Americans buy lightly used vehicles coming off leases. Other consumers are keeping their vehicles longer because quality and durability have improved.More: Toyota, Nissan sales fall, but Fiat Chrysler, Honda post gains despite polar vortex

More: Why optimism is up in the auto industry despite lower January salesSmoke said February sales results might have been helped by consumer fear that new car prices will rise later this year if President Donald Trump enacts tariffs on imported vehicles.“February could be one of the last really strong months of the year because there are other headwinds facing us,” said Smoke. The month's results are a good barometer of, "the gradual sales decline we expect through 2019," said Jeremy Acevedo, Edmunds' manager of industry analysis. "We're really starting to see a slump in retail demand that stems from the growing costs of new car purchases."Here are the February results compared with February 2018.

Cool #SuperHandling Challenge

https://www.mediapost.com/publicatio...challenge.html

Acura Launches #SuperHandling Challenge

Just in time for March Madness, Acura is launching a social campaign that targets basketball fans.

Acura is tapping some influential basketball personalities, including ESPN analyst and commentator Jay Williams and social basketball commentator Filayyyy, to host the challenge, which was created by Mullen.

Throughout March’s NCAA Tournament, they will ask fans to bring their “super handling” dribbling skills into unexpected everyday situations (posting their videos and content on social with the hashtag #SuperHandling).

The campaign is a play on Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive technology. Throughout the tournament, Williams and Acura will repost the best #SuperHandling videos to Instagram stories, providing technical analysis of fans’ top moves.

Acura is teaming up with a select group of influencers from across the basketball and sports communities to amplify the challenge. Influencers will include Harlem Globetrotter Briana “Hoops” Green (@brianagreen11), Spider Man-clad YouTube basketball sensation Grayson “The Professor” Boucher (@theprofessor), and sports comedy commentator Carlos “Famous Los” Sanford (@famouslos32).

In addition to social media, Acura’s #SuperHandling Challenge campaign will be featured across ESPN and CBS Sports digital platforms, along with ads and homepage takeovers running from March 15 through April 8.

During the March college tournament, Acura will also run additional campaign creative, themed around the tagline “Prove your #SuperHandling,” featuring the Acura RDX exclusively on ESPN and CBS Sports. Acura’s March basketball campaign will also be featured on "The Bleacher Report," NCAA’s homepage, and NCAA’s FireTV sponsorship.

Acura’s Super-Handling All-wheel drive technology will reach its 15-year milestone and 1-million mark in global sales of SH-AWD-equipped vehicles later this year. Acura now offers the technology in either mechanical or electrified form on 5 of 6 Acura models.

The facelift helped....it actually looks pretty sharp for what it is and the price cut (lowered MSRP) helped too.

If i didnt know what is underneath all that, i would actually recommend it to others...

my gf actually said "that car is pretty cute" when she saw one on the road... i said .. it is just as old as your Civic and she looked confused.

NSX sales up 100%

Despite the slow decline of minivans, the Ody still sells ~10k/month about the same as it did in 1999 a decade and two decades ago.

as much as people hate Minivans, when you have more kids, the practicality eventually will win over any man or woman's pride...

No SUV can duplicate the accessibility of big dual sliding doors with roomy 3rd row seats.

As one who has a 17 MDX and just came back from a road trip, I totally agree. I would have much preferred to have taken this road trip in an Odyssey. Not to mention being able to make Home Depot/Lowe’s runs for large items when needed.

You'll get no argument from me on that point. Though I'm ignorant to whether or not the Civic 1.5T/2.0T can be adapted to the ILX's 9G Civic based chassis, the powertrain does appear to be tempting low hanging fruit off the corporate Honda tree. I personally think that a 250hp-270hp Type S with a 6MT would increase enthusiast traffic at Acura stores.

I was talking about the new civic platform, i thought they already have both 1.5T and the 2.0T (Sport/CTR).

6mt would be great but highly unlikely. The days of 6mt is gone unless we are talking about the niche market.
