XM Radio $77/year still works

Ok, the other thread closed but it helped me immensely. I just signed up for XM Radio after my 3 month trial had expired way back in September.

I called 1-800-528-5959 and pressed 0 to get to someone.

I spoke with the rep and told him I wanted to renew, and I gave him my radio code (found by going to channel 0). He asked me if I had any promotions. I said I had the "winback" promo for $77/yr. He said OK no problem. It took a while for him to get the info all in, but he said I am confirmed for that price for the year and my XM is now up and running.

I got it for baseball mostly this summer

I think the last one got locked due to the off-topic conversation.

XM for $6+ / month is a decent deal. Any higher and it isn't worth it to me.

And speaking of off-topic, GO YANKEES! (wow they are old/beat up).

I just got off of the phone with the XM rep and at first the he explained to me how XM could not honor the 77 promo because I did not recieve the specific mailing offering it to me (I had told him the salesman at Acura told me about it). I explained to him very calmly, "It is silly to require me to wait for a piece of paper in the mail when I am already on the phone with you now. Furthermore, I am only interested in having an XM account if I can do so for $77 a year, so if you cannot offer it to me today then I will not be pursuing any future relationship with your company." He put me on hold and in less than 30 seconds came back and took my credit card for $77. The account is active again.

Thanks for the heads up about this!

Ya know, XM's sound quality is shit (so is Sirius). But XM does suck slightly less...

But I do feel I'm getting my $$ out of it... So it IS worth $77 a year for the quality of service (sound) you get.

I only wish people would stop calling it CD or near CD sound quality. A 128kbit MP3 sounds so much better it makes XM radio sound like playing a cassette tape that was left outside since 1988. And a 128kbit MP3 isn't even near CD sound quality...

I'm being over dramatic using a cassette tape left outside for 20 years. But the sound of XM is about equal to a 64 to 96kbit MP3, this being on a good day with clear skies. If you have heavy overcast or any trees above you the sound is even worse.

With XM all of the high end and any dynamics in the music are totally gone. Cymbals sound like digital water. Same with snare drum and or acoustic guitar. On quiet segments or electronica music the XM compression can keep up quite well. But music with a lot of dynamic range sounds like complete ass.

If you can ever flip back and forth between a song on CD vs XM it's a night and day difference...

A punchy Dave Matthews song like "What Would You Say" would be a good example of something with a lot of dynamic range. It sounds like COMPLETE ass on XM. If you flipped back and forth between that on XM and CD you would be disgusted with XM's sonic qualities.

XM isn't even as good as FM in terms of dynamic range and sound quality. The compression is just too much. Even the "premium" channels on XM that carry the highest bitrates won't match FM in terms of quality.

The only advantages to XM over FM would be quantity, lack of commercials and national signal availability. Certainly not sound quality...

And in the end, I do think XM is worth $77 a year... even with it's sub par sound quality.

So... since the other thread was closed....

I'm almost at my renewal date (got the $77 last year), but has anyone (in the past few weeks, or since the new pricing started last month) been able to still get the $77/year promo rate?? Just want to make sure before I call and explain the situation...

I just tried the 800 # and followed the instructions from the earlier post to get the XM radio for $77 for the year. Could not have been easier. Do exactly as the post describes and it will work 11/11/2008.

Has any of you discover that The System Ch.82 is available Online ONLY?

Does anyone know why. Are they taking it down?

JUST got off the phone with XM. I had to bitch HARD, but I was able to get transferred to another agent who was willing to renew the $77 per year offer. I'm set until November 2009.

I've gotten XM for $15/3 months. Initially I let the free trail lapse for about 4 months, but then got a card in the mail for the offer. 3 months later I called to cancel and they said they would give it to me again.

I plan to do the same next month, if they give it to me fine, if not then I'll cancel. Their stock is doing so bad, they need to keep customers at whatever the price. I don't like the new changes, so I won't pay more than $5/month. And I'll tell them that on the phone as well.

So at least with me, I appear to be on a $60/year rate

$77.00/year promo still works 9/12/09

The $77.00/year "winback" promo still works. I called this morning 9/12/09 @ (800) 547-8118 and had no problem. Total actual cost with tax & fees = $88.78. It is only good for one year, however come renewal time next year, if I can't get that rate again, I probobly cancel. Thanks for the info playdoh.

My $77/yr deal had expired and I was paying full price for some months. I had lost track and just simply forgot to call them. Finally some months ago (6?) I called them and said I want to cancel the service. They said they had to transfer me to do that.

The next person I spoke with asked me why I was canceling and I said "the price is too high and since the merger I am unhappy with the new channel lineup also". They offered me the discount again for $77/yr. I told them I would take that deal -- and again they said it is only for one year. I said fine.

Well this is year 4 that I have this "deal" now Just have to remember to call. But truthfully, I am getting a little tired of the selection and like the other poster pointed out the QUALITY does suck. It truly is 64-96kbit, at BEST. I crank my volume up to 40 and the highs and lows are still weak and muddled. Pop in a CD or even a 192kbit mp3 and it makes me want to ditch the XM. They are lucky I listen to baseball and like the 80s and 90s stations. I do miss ETHEL though.

I would NOT pay more than $77/mo and even this seems high for what I use it for.

No question the quality is not there. I like the sports talk and the music is just another option. I'm with you, if I can't get $77.00, I will like not re-subscribe.

Does this $77 rate include Best of Sirius (e.g., Howard Stern, Playboy, etc.)?

From the XM website:
Premium XM Radio Online upgrade for an additional $2.99/month

They ran a special a few months ago for $1.99 but looks like it expired.

just want to share my experience here...

i sold my tl-s a few months ago and leased an 09 altima. they gave me 3 free months of xm. it expires tomorrow, so the other day i called them and got a woman who refused to acknowledge the existence of a $77 a year promotion so i hung up. i called a few hours later and got a guy who told me there is no such promotion. i told him i had talked to a woman who transferred my call to him that said this promotion does exist, plus my dealership had told me this deal exists.

anyway he plays stupid puts me on hold for 5 minutes then comes back and says hes happy to tell me that the promotion does exist. so long story short i got the 77 a year deal on my altima, but i got charged the $11 for the copyright or something. whatever, i ate the $11 cost did not feel like arguing over it (it comes out to less than a dollar a month). just wanted to stay the $77 a year is still going strong, however it does not include best of sirius. (i only listen for opie and anthony/ron and fez anyway)
