Subwoofer Options

Hey guys,

I currently have two 10s in a large ported box with an apline class d mrd-301m. This is in my 04TSX with Navi. Im considering a few options firstly because I think the box is too large and is far too boomy for what Im looking for. At first I was really impressed by the power and volume, but I think it is overkill. Im really looking for SQ more than the boominess Im getting. Should I switch to like two 8s in a sealed box? Of maybe just 1 10?. What about hooking the amp up to some new 6x9's in the rear for bass (probably would overpower). Just looking for some advice. I do like to turn the volume up and hear some bass, just not with all the rattling and vibrating.

Thanks.

put them in a sealed box, or go with just 1 10. I wouldnt go down the an 8 inch sub though. Mine is very loud, but also sounds real good - I would say because it is sealed. A ported box will make more bass, but you will sacrifice some SQ in most cases.

Before BM comes in and says it, I'll say it.

Size is not an absolute indicator of the kind of sound you'll get. Nowadays, you can get some very long-throw woofers that sound "bigger" than they really are. Also, you can have a ported box that sounds pretty good. Ported does not always equal boomy.

You have a lot of choices and options. I recommend that you decide the amount of space you're willing to use, the amount of power you'll have, and then decide your solution with those in mind.

Harder to find 8" subs than it used to be... you can get the kind of sound you want with various size woofers and sealed or ported boxes... it may just be that your woofers won't perform they way you want.

I'd buy or build a .75 or .85 cf sealed box and see how it sounds with one of your tens.

Since .75cf is usually about as small as you can go, you can buy a more suitable sub for it if you need to.

(My last sub was a 10" in a .75cf sealed box and I loved it. My current is a 12 in a .85cf sealed box and it sounds very good).
