my recommendation is always to get a better quality sub rather than a bigger sub or more subs. so if your buddy wants to spend 300 bucks, get the best 12 for that price instead of 2 lesser quality 12's, or a lesser quality 15.

solobaric l5 dvc is on sale for 150 at crutchfield... pretty good deal if he has an amp to run it...

do you know how much he wants to spend?

smaller subs generally mean cleaner bass. I run two Infinity 10's off A bazzoka amp (kinda cheap) but it sounds great.

That depends on how loud you wanna go and how you amp is set up.

The bigger the sub, the deeper he bass.

i run 1 alpine 12" type S sub with type II Q logic box... runs off profile 600 msx amp. sound is very clean and since i have no dynamat for now i keep the amp at a low level.

the boom i get from just that one sub is more than enough IMO, the whole cars shakes and i think more subs would just be overkill IMO

all in all, its your ride if you want to go big on the bass its all you

bandpass is designed to fudge a little accuracy for more spl..

id go with 2 12's over 1 15...

2(pi*6^2) = 226.08

pi*7.5^2 = 176.625

more surface area and more accurate sound...

i would go with 3 10's over the 2 12's though which is what i was running in my first gen cl.

3(pi*5^2) = 235.5

2 12's over a 15 any day. A 15 will go lower but 2 12's are going to hit harder. One 15 is going to sound way muddier. Bandpass is BS, BTW and for the reasons listed above. Though this all requires you to set it up right. Research. Get the right size amp and make sure it is set up and wired correctly by whoever does your install. Most importantly, and soooooo many people fudge this and kill their systems, the box is CRUCIAL. It has to have the right air volume for your particular speakers, too small or too big and your sound is fucked.

2 12s is what he needs. 15s are old school and will produce a real deep boomy base. 12s are a bit more of an all around speaker.

I agree, you can even get 1 10 or 12 if you get a good one like JL W7, but my 2 12's are all I would ever want...and all my trunk wants!

Get 2 JL 12W0, build a good box and add some good power and you're good to go. Box design can make a big difference. Go to a JL authorized dealer and they will have a JL reference manual thats shows you what type of sound and performance to expect from certain type(ie ported, sealed) and size(ie. cubic ft) enclosure.
