Shallow Subs

Has anyone had any experience with shallow mount subs. Seems like they are popping up everywhere. I was looking at one from Almani, looks like good stuff.

Shallow mount subs are a lifesaver for people with trucks. I've installed plenty of the Pioneer "pancake" subs in trucks and cars that standard subs would not fit in. Kicker also makes a flat subwoofer. The Pioneer kicks ass!

Would it be at all possible to mount a pair of shallow subs in place of the 6x9s on the back shelf open air? obviously lots of modding and cutting but would it interfere with the structure of the car at all? Id run front components and loose the back speakers, but save trunk space...

That would be a waste of time. They need to be mounted in a sealed enclosure. You'd have to build a fiberglass enclosure that would hang down into the trunk. And it would sound horrible from your rear deck flexing everytime the bass hit. Not to mention all that cone noise.

So for someone like me with an 02 CL, will it be sufficient. I take quite a few trips in my car and the box I have now takes up too much space, but I also want to keep that thump because on long trips we usually watch DVD's and I want my wife to feel at home

Sounds like you need a fiberglass enclosure. Steer clear of the flat subwoofers. You don't have a truck. A standard type subwoofer will perform better for your application.

Those are pretty nice. If I wanted to go that way, could I just pull my Comp VR's out and drop them in?

A custom enclosure is made specifically for your car and your woofer. So... yes, your Comp VR should drop right in.

I currently do not have access to a 2nd gen CL and I don't have a mold for one. Do you have any local car audio shop that could do this work?

Ok lol, thanks for the words of wisdom. It was a theoretical question more than anything.
