Replacing Halogen Brights

Has anyone replaced their Halogen Brights on their TSX yet with some Super White HID lights so that they match the HID Xenon Projector low beams better (and also put out more light)? I think this is one of the things I will want to do to my car...Need to read the manual to see what kind of bulbs they are.

the super white, while they say hid on them... are not true HID (xenon gas light)... they are glorified halogen lights.

the main reason why HID don't appear on high beams on most car is because there is a delay when turning on the lights... so if you go to high beam somebody (to signal something for example)... the solution to this problem is to have the HID high beam light always on, and use a shutter (like a camera) to open and close, allowing light to come thru or turned off.

you can believe what you want but an HID light requires more then just a bulb replacement.

Correct. HID lights require a high voltage (~400V) ballast (converter) to get the discharge going. You can't just stick a HID "bulb" into a halogen outlet and expect it to work. It'll just sit there and never turn on.

I'm also looking at their picture of the bulb. Basically it's a high wattage halogen with a blue filter on it. If the blue stuff is applied on (cheap) then it will eventually discolor and darken with use due to heat. If it is actually dyed glass, it may last longer, but I couldn't say when.

This is a real HID kit: http://www.supremepower.com/category...-xenonkit.html

i had a pair of bulbs very similar to these on my old infiniti for high beams. i never had a problem with them after use for over 2 years. sure they blue stuff may discolor BUT how many times are you going to use your high beams? not that much. it is rare when you keep the high beams on for a long period of time. if you have $ then id say go for the real thing. im just cheap :P

i would consider going for the hid kit for the fogs only

How hard is it to replace the high beam bulbs? I've heard others talking about getting moisture in the casing and wouldn't want that to happen, but would like to put the super white bulbs in place of the high beams.

I got a pair of eurolite xenon lights (halogen lights but more white than the stock) from Tucan industries. They look much nicer than the yellowish stock H1...

The only thing you have to do to change the bulbs is to manually unscrew the rubber cap behind the headlight. No need to remove anything else. It's a 2 minute job (not even). Just make sure the lights have been turned off for a while before removing them... They can be pretty hot...

Regards

Yeah, I don't want a Bi-Xenon light setup, I just wanted to replace the bright builbs with some that are actually white and not yellowish like the regular Halogen bulbs. So a bulb replacement would probably do it...I guess I just have to find some that emit the type of light I want.

I replaced the bulbs on my Grand Prix and was very happy with the results...of course that was low and high beams...I just want the high beams now.

Wiz, I use Philips Vision Plus bulbs. Bright white and 50% brighter
than stock. I got them at Powerbulbs.com. Great company, I highly recommend them. Bulbs were here in 9 days.

Cool...those sound pretty good, and the price is not too bad either. So we are all in agreeance that the TSX brights are H1 bulbs right?

Yes They are H1 and for a matter of fact I replaced mine with PIAA Xtreme White Plus H1 ( model # HE-307E ) and they really did not make that much of a change. I know what you mean by the contrast of the HID and the halogens which makes you wonder ... WHY ... the would do that ??? I am still looking for something to even out the look myself

From the '04 TSX Shop Manual, p. 22-164:

1. Disconnect the plug in connector (3P) from the headlight.

2. Remove the ruber ring cover.

3. Pull the retaining spring away from the bulb, then remove the bulb.

4. Install in reverse order making sure the notches in the bulb aligh with the tabs in the headlight.

High beams are 55 Watt, 12 Volt H1 type bulbs. (Specs, p. 2-18).

I replaced the headlights in my S-10 with the SYLVANIA SILVER STAR bulbs and it made a HUGE differance. They have them at autozone for like $24 or $25 a bulb. It really hurt doing my low and high beams...thank god I only have to do the high beams now.

Glad to see you made it over to the new site Jab. I think I'm going to order a pair of bulbs off of the web from the same place BamaTSX suggested...will do it when I get back from my trip this weekend.

FYI
Just a note before you spend money regardless of what "Super-white" bulb you put in...
If you have Daytime Running Lights like we do in Canada

it will still be yellowish not "super-white" because the DRL operation sends lower power.
If you turn on lights then use High-beams then and only then will the bulbs illuminate with full power and be the "super-white" light you are after.

Cheers,
Kaz

Just another confirmation that the bulbs are H1. I had to look at the bulb itself where it says H1 on the bottom.

I replaced mine with Nokya Arctic White Pro Halogen bulbs. Cost was $29.95. I have pictures in Daylight and Nighttime of both the stock and Nokya bulbs. To summarize the difference, there is no yellow tint with the Nokya bulb. At nighttime, the Nokya bulb just makes the TSX look better. As for driving on the road, the high beams seem brighter, but not that much brighter. Although I wish that I could drive all the time with the high beams on.

Where did you get your bulbs at ABTSX? Also, post the pics of the day and night shots if you can...I'd be interested to see them...

The side marker bulbs don't fit the side markers on the TSX. I used them to replace the front door lights.

Yes I have replaced my high beams with PIAA Extreme White bulbs. The temperature ( brightness) on the PIAA Extreme Whites are almost identical to the HID's we have. Both emmit the same bright clear white light, and my PIAA's are definitely brighter than the stock halogens. The only time that I can tell the difference is that the HID's got that cool purplish outline.

Here are some good prices

I bought the Eaglite ones for my motorcycle, and they are REALLY nice. VERY white, and brighter than stock as well.

The stuff is shipped out quick too...

My Phillips Ultra Blue bulbs came this week while I was gone. It took ten minutes to install them. No tools needed, but you might want a clean shop cloth to handle them with. Do not use bare fingers as the oil from your skin will shorten bulb life.
They look cool and match the HIDs. I think they are more powerful than the stock bulbs based on my cutting high beams on after one Ultra Blue installed .

Lightbulb

The Silver Star are indeed very white. I installed them on my Jetta and it made a huge difference. Much whiter than stock bulbs.

Based on what I heard here, and read around the Internet, I bought a pair of Phlips Vision Plus bulbs from powerbulbs.com. They got here in about three days, which is not bad, considering that they came from England. They threw in two wedge base Ultra Blue bulbs that I put in the doors - they look very nice there.

The bulbs are definitely whiter than the stock bulbs, matching the HIDs much better, but the brightness wasn't dramatically improved in terms of being able to see much farther. I think they were worth it for the better match, though, and street signs and other reflecting things seem to show up better with the whiter color than the old bulbs, just as if they were in the HID beams.

I shouldn't be too surprised by the less than spectacular brightness increase (although I was expecting deep down to be blown away by the new bulbs...sunglasses at night!) - the manufacturer claims "up to 50% brighter." That means anywhere from 0% at worst to 50% at best. If the 50% is only in a limited area, and the rest of the pattern is much less improved, I'm sure I wouldn't notice much, as I don't.

Thanks Doc,
I was wondering if I should have ordered the Vision Plus bulbs rather than the Blue Vision Ultra Blue bulbs. They sound just like the same performance I'm getting from my better color matched Blue Vision Ultras.
I think higher powered fog light bulbs are now the next change for me. I have seen some 80 watt bulbs that would be somewhat brighter.

If someone can find a close color match please post and let the rest of us know. Also on the Fog lights. Thank you!

I don't care if they are brighter as long as they match the HID's color.

friend has these lights. IMO, these are the best look-alike HID bulbs you can buy. The PIAA company is reptuable too, but these suckers are exepensive

I put in the Nokya Arctic Whites (or something like that) and they look great. I picked up a pair of bulbs like these for my g/f's Accord, although I haven't put them in yet. Her yellow headlights drive my insane, and they're so dull.
