Question for the installers, cutting dash?
I have a HU I'd like to put into my 87 Suburban I got. Problem is I have to cut the metal dash opening to fit a DIN unit. It's a shaft style now. The kit I have has the template for the metal dash as well as the plastic dash cover.
So my question is what would work best to cut this hole. It's rather large, & it's thick metal.
Thanks

I use an airsaw. There's a kit: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=265-670 You still have to cut but this makes it easier to line up exactly where the hole needs to be and makes for a cleaner finished product. I have done it with just a radio sleeve just scribing it and cutting it like that, which works but by the time you have the trim ring on the radio it's a pretty tight fit, if you don't get the hole cut just right the radio will hang off the edge of the dash slightly.
Airsaw with a bi-metal cutting blade is the way to go. You can cut the plastic and the metal simultaneously.

Did this today.
OMG This was a PITA! Used a skill saw for the plastic dash panel, & a sawzall for the metal dash. Went a little too far on one side & cut through the trim panel & plastic dash. Oh well, can't really notice it.
But now I have something that sounds a ton better
