Owners of aftermarket head units please help...
Sorry for posting here but I'd probably get a quicker response. I'm putting in an Eclipse head unit and Alpine Nav. The installer is telling me I need a "Bose Converter" which is basically so my head unit can run on the Bose speakers. Is this something that is absolutely necessary or is he trying to jerk me??
Is this something all you guys with aftermarket heads had to use??
This place is highly recommended and I've seen tons of their work. I spoke with Streeteffectz for some work but he's on vacation and I can't do this any other week. Thanks for any help guys.

I swapped the rear ones with JBL GTO930 (cheap speakers but fit nicely) and the difference is awesome. Why would you change the head unit and wanna use the stock speakers? Even a $79 pair would show you the difference, at least, in my case.

Hmm..thanks for the advice. Never checked out our speakers. They're cheap paper?? So did you replace the ones in the door as well as the ones in the rear? He's charging 85 or so for the converter. What you're saying makes sense..mind as well go for a cheap pair of speakers. Do you know what size? Thanks a lot.

I think you will be happier if you allocate the $85 toward replacement of the Bose amps and speakers. They are the weakest link to the CL stereo. I'd get rid of them even before replacing the head unit for the biggest improvement for the bucks.

watch out for Bose....very overrated stuff.
they've done a good job marketing themselves as high end equipment to consumers who know nothing about car and home audio.

I replaced my head unit with a JVC Kameleon, but left the factory speakers. I think the Bose speakers sound fine; they're not great, but that's as good as I need my car audio to be.
The shop that I took it to had to use an ohm converter to account for the 2.3ohms (or something crazy like that) that the Bose speakers run at. However, they only charged me around $20-30 for it; I think that $80 is a total rip off.

You have to replace the speakers all together. There is absolutely NO comparison between aftermarket and stock....... check the link above to see what I have done to the stereo set-up. BTW the Alpine Type-R has now been replaced by a JL 12w6....... sounds kiler

Are you guys ripping out the existing amps for the bose speakers when replacing them as well? Or are you just replacing the speakers and running them off of the existing amps?

Actually, when I had my rear Blows speakers ripped out, I "semi-debadged" the Blowz speaker grilles by using some very fine steel wool to remove the "chrome" finish that made the word "BOSE" stand out. Now, when I look in my rear view mirror, that 4-letter word no longer reflects in my rear window!

Keerect!! When you get rid of the crappy Blowz speakers, you gotta lose the Blowz power amp. There's techie reasons for doing it, but trust the boyz on the board and get yerself a nice, new 4-channel power amp to drive the fronts and rears.

Yes, indeedy. It's gonna cost a few rubles more for the sub amp (like a JL Audio monoblock subwoofer amp or a 2-channel amp with the outputs "bridged" together to get twice the output). Another possible option would be to use a single 5-channel amp, whose 5th channel is dedicated to your subwoofer.
I went with the two "smaller," separate power amps because of space limitations in where I wanted the installation done, and the fact that the JL Audio 5-channel amp wasn't going be available until the fall.
