Opinions on custom install...please.

I'm trying to decide on the components for my 05 TL. I'm thinnking about 2 10" Treo SSI, MTX 5601 & 5302 amps, and Audio Control EQX. I'm keeping the stock unit but plan on changing out the stock speakers in the near future. I'm new to car audio and just picked out these parts based on recommendations from the installer. Whta do you guys think of these components? Links are below if you want to read up on them. Thanks.

Stay away from those MTX amps. If I read correctly the S/N ratio is in the 70's? That's pure crap.

How much do you want or have to spend on equipment?

And yes stay away from those MTX amps. Treo is a sub, but mostly on the SPL side.

No MTX... and why an EQX? I'd go EQS, DQS, or a Clean Sweep.

Or use Zapco Digital Reference amps...w/onboard DSP EQ.

Thanks for the advice on MTX. I'll stay away from it. I think I'll be going with Zapco amp instead. They're a little more but it'll be OK. I've got a budget of $25000-$3000.

I was wrong with the EQX. It's supposed to be EQS. They also recommend the LC6 to improve the stock headunit. I want the EQS b/c I need a line driver to improve the sound on my dvd player. The sound is spliced into the XM line. I lose half the volume for DVD so I need a line driver to boost it.

As for subs, I'm not looking for anything that will rattle the car next to me. I just want something that will produce good quality sound from inside. So Treo won't be the way to go?

Again, I'm a total noob when it comes to car audio.

If you go with Zapco amps then you could use a bass volume control knob up front to set the amount of bass. In that case Treo would do fine or you could go with Image Dynamics IDQ 12's.

Im running 3 zapco amps, 2 competions and one reference. I love them and I know you would love the new digital line that Eld recommended.

Is that the 500.1? That was the one I was considering. For the sound that I wanted, I was told that 2 10" JL W3 adn the Zapco 500.1 wiould do fine. I'm old so I don't "thump." I just want something with crisp, clean lows.

huyster, if they are telling you you need an LC8, you shouldn't use this shop. I am an Audio Control dealer, and there is no need at all for an LC8.

Either that or tell them to call me at the store.

Wouldn't the LC6 make the the stock headunit sound a little better? Or it doesn't work as well as it's supposed to?

I wouldn't mind doing w/o it. I could use the $$ on other components.

The LC8 and 6 are intended to work with powerful OEM amplifier outputs, in cases where you can't get to the preamp signals going into the amp from the OEM HU. (fiber optic, fixed level, whatever).

When the deck has an amp in it that is not really high power, you can run speaker level in directly into the EQS, etc, in the Audio Control line. No need for the LC.

BUT YOUR TL HU HAS NO AMP IN IT! It sends preamp signals from the deck to the amp. They are balanced, they are not on RCA cables, but they are NOT spekaer level signals. You grab those signals. Have you read completely the info on your car posted in the 3gtl audio portion of this site? the VP of JL Audio, Manville Smith, has posted very detailed info on this car.

I only use the LC8 because, per Audio Control, the auto turnon circuitry in it is better than the LC6.

Look, if that's what your shop told you, you really either need a new shop or you need your shop to talk to someone more experienced in what you want (me, or others here, for instance). I own a shop and can explain wha they want.

The store phone number is on the web site.

The above should have read, "I use ONLY the LC8...", not "I only use the LC8...".

My apologies for the error.

I would be cautious to use this shop because they recommended MTX amps.

Those Treo subs aren't know for their sound quality but they can get very loud.

Thanks a lot for the help. This will save me plenty of hastle. The only reason why I'm going to this shop is a proximity to my house and the price. I just want to pick out the components myself and not have to rely on their opinions anymore. I've decided to go with 2 10" JL W3 and Zapco 500.1 amp. I'll do some more research on the Audio Control.

Don't do ANY more research on the Audio Control. Read here how to interface with your system. That will tell you what you need to know.
