One rattle down, five billion to go!

I just thought I'd let you guys in on a discovery I made last night while I was replacing the 6x9's in my TSX. In my car, there used to be a hideous vibration/rattle coming from the back at certain harmonics. While replacing my speakers, I noticed that the oem speakers were sealed on the bottom with a liquid gasket kind of substance (nothing messy mind you) and the speakers were screwed down with 4 machine screws. Actually, they weren't typical machine screws, they were slightly tapered at the bottom. At any rate, being that they are machine threaded, I expected them to screw into a nut or something on that level. To my suprise, they were screwed directly into a hole in the sheet metal on the rear deck. I went ahead and used the oem screws to secure my new speakers (JBL GTO 926) and felt a little wary of how the screws didn't tighten down particularly well. Anyhow, I listened to some bass heavy music and, with these speakers, the bass is so much tighter that it drove that vibration/rattle nuts. I then went in the trunk and just tapped on the bottom of the speakers with my fingers. Normally, it should sound solid with a thunk, but it sounded a little loose. I grabbed the screws from the botom and wiggled. Sure enough, they were moving on top. To make a long story short, I replaced the oem screws with the sheet metal screws and metal clips that came with the speakers. This made for a nice secure set and no more vibration. I thought those of you with stock speakers might be interested to know that they may be a source of unwanted noise in your cabin.

Wow, that probably explains why my speaker buzz went away when I got my speakers upgraded.

I don't remember if I had that problem. But I completely removed my 6x9s when I mounted my sub box.

but I think I check the door speaker for that same problem.
