Ohms of a DVC speaker

I understand how ohm loads work in normal speakers

2 four ohm speakers together make a 2 ohm load

how does it work for a dvc speaker?

if both coils are 4 ohms can you wire the speaker to 2 ohms using only the 2 voice coils?

ive got an amp in my gf's car

800w X 1 at 4 ohms or
300W X 2 at 2 ohms
its not 2 ohm stable when bridged

what kind of dvc speakers would work with this amp?

speakers with 2 four ohm coils? so i could wire each one in 2 ohms

thanks

Sounds like you are on the right track.

Assuming a parallel wiring configuration (postive to positive, negative to negative), if a DVC speaker has 4 ohm coils, it will become a 2 ohm speaker once it is wired.

So, if you're looking to run 2 subs, then you need to find dual 4 ohm voice coil speakers to acheive the 2 ohm load you would want for your amp to put out max stable power.

You would need either a dual 8 ohm coil speaker (wired in parallel) or a dual 2 ohm coil speaker (wired in series).

Both would acheive the 4 ohm load for the amp.

Does that help?

Yes thanks for the help !!!

I have a kicker 600.1
one chanel, 2 ohm stable

so i guess ill get 2 L7's with 2 four ohm voice coils
and another 600.1

that would make 1 amp per speaker at 2 ohms right ?

with my girls 800w 2ch amp and 1 dvc speaker

can i put one voice coil on the 1st chanel and the other on the 2nd ?

In my opinion, two Kicker 600.1s is going to be TOO much bass!

I mean, that is going to be loud as hell. Maybe that's what you are looking for?

My single 12'' with a 600w bridged amp going to it is a lot more bass than the stock system has treble. I can never turn it all the way up unless all I want to hear is thump.

If I was you, and I was looking to put 2 woofers in my car, I would just use that single Kicker 600.1 to power them both.

If you are looking to use dual voice coil speakers, and you want 2 speakers, then look for dual 4 ohm coils, wire them in parallel on each speaker (making a 2 ohm load) and then wire the 2 separate speakers in series (bringing the load back to 4 ohms). That will effectively put 300w to each speaker (which is a shitload!)

It isn't advisable to hook each voice coil on a dvc speaker to different channels on the same amp. If there is any difference in signal to either of the voice coils, it will harm the performance and sound quality of the speaker. You best bet on a dvc speaker is to wire the coils together (in parallel or series) before hooking them to an amp.

This tutorial on the JL Audio site is quite good... it starts by explaining what the voice coil does and then talks about the different wiring techniques if you hit the NEXT QUESTION button at the bottom of the page:

Yea my system is already loud with two 12" kicker xpl's and a kx600.1.

Im goin to wait till I blow up these to go to the squares =)

or mabey

Let me see if I understand now
If I got 2 kicker comp VR's that were 2 ohm dvc, wired them in series resulting in a 4 ohm load each, then wired them together to create a 2 ohm load. I could push them with my 600.1 right?
(600w rms mono amp 2ohm stable)

Thanks for your help!
