No Sticky about OEM setup?
Hey guys. I was looking for some information about the OEM setup for my TSX and figured I had hit a goldmine when I stumbled onto this board. However, I was disapointed to see that there was no clear thread that answered my basic questions about the OEM setup. Maybe we can gather some of the data here, then compile it into an informative post that can be sticky'ed for all to benifit?
I'll begin with some of the data I was able to gather after reading through the board for the past few days, and maybe some others can answer some of my questions as well. If you have some input that you don't know is absolute fact, then indicate that with your info. Is there a difference in the audio systems between the nav and non-nav headunits? The HU has two sets of stereo pre-amp outs (front and rear) that run to an external amp. There has been discusion of a wiring diagram for the HU harness, though I haven't come across it yet. The HU has an aux input that can be used for an external source. Directions for using this input can be found here: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3148 The external amp, far all channels, is located under the factory HU? It is assumed that the signal from the HU to the amp is low-level, though I haven't seen any definate info on this. The amp has outputs for the front speakers, rear door speakers, and rear deck speakers. The front speakers receive a full range signal. Where are the X-overs located? Is there processing in the amp, or passive X-overs on the way to the front speakers? The front door speaker is a 6.5" Aftermarket speakers will require drilling holes for mounting as the OEM speakers are mounted with clips. A write-up on how to remove the door panels can be found here: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1989 The max mounting depth of the front woofers (measured from the surface of the metal door skin) is _____ . Is the window glass a factor when it's lowered? The max clearance from the metal door skin to the inside of the stock speaker grilles is ______ . If the stock grille for the dash tweeter is removed, the resulting hole is _____ inches in dia. The rear doors get a full range signal? I don't even know what these speakers look like. Coaxial? Size? Mounting depth? The rear deck 6x9 speakers are low-pass filtered (internal to the amp) and are for bass only. This X-over is fixed at ____ Hz? That's all I have for now. Feel free to add to this thread if you have some usefull information. Thanks. |
Is there a difference in the audio systems between the nav and non-nav headunits?
HU/NAVI = Alpine CD Player = Panasonic The external amp is located under the OEM CD player, behind the "not an ash tray". The signal from the HU to the amp is low-level. No one has measured the voltage level, yet. Where are the X-overs located? OEM amp Is there processing in the amp? Yes, lot's of it. The max mounting depth of the front woofers (measured from 1/2" away from the stock grill to the rear of the door, leaving 1/4" gap) is 2.85". Is the window glass a factor when it's lowered? Not if you cut the plastic liner behind the OEM grill. The max clearance from the metal door skin to the inside of the stock speaker grilles depends. One can cut the plastic tabs that extrude out of the door and increase the distance by as much as 1/2" inch, if not more. If the stock grille for the dash tweeter is removed, the resulting hole is ?? inches in dia. The rear doors get a full range signal? Yes. I don't even know what these speakers look like. Coaxial? Size? Mounting depth? Same as front. The rear deck 6x9 speakers are low-pass filtered (internal to the amp) and are for bass only. This X-over frequency varies by volume. |

Hope all that info is right. The web site is not letting me edit my post. :(

Wow, this is a great idea for a sticky thread...one stop shopping for anyone wanting to upgrade:) You get some rep points from me!!! Not that they amount to much:(

soopa, myself, and a few other members have been working on a FAQ for the TSX. We're just redoing some of the database stuff so that it is better organized but we should have it up shortly. We will have info on stock equipment as well as upgrade info.

This thread is a great idea.
slo007, you mentioned that the Nav system is made by Apline. However, does anyone have any information on the make/model or the LCD screen? Specifically, I am trying to find information regarding the wiring for the touch screen. Perhaps the Acura TSX manual has this information...? |

I don't see why the manual would have brand names, but perhaps it might have a figure on the wiring. Best way to find out is create a new thread with a request for a scan of a manual page in regards to the LCD wiring. However, last I checked the entire sound system is one unit, so I'm not sure it will have any info on the stuff inside. |

I had written up all of the pin outs, wire colors, etc. once... but it was other the other site that is down, and lost the document during a system crash. I was going to revive it, but kept waiting for the FAQ/How-to section to show up so I coulf up load all of the scans and documents... oh well :dunno: But if anyone has questions, I'd be glad to answer them! |
Wow... you really did tear everything apart...
Here is my question: Over the past week, I have figured out eveything I need in order to connect a media PC to the nav system, including both video and audio. However, I do not want to carry this out on my car unless I can find a way to use either the steering wheel controls or the touch screen input to control the PC (I'm not talking about controlling Windows, a start menu, etc., just a simple GUI for music and video playback). So, when you took apart your nav system and carried out your mods, were you able to locate any specific inputs for the steering wheel controls or touch screen? Also, is there any documentation regarding either connection in the user's manual? I hope this makes sense. Thanks a bunch. |

I believe that the steering wheel controls have internal resistors associated with each button, and you would need a voltage comparator circuit to determine which button was pressed. The aftermarket interfaces I've seen (PAC) imitate aftermarket IR remotes - don't know if they would interface with your media PC.

Here is the info for the audio buttons, perhaps you can make your own adapter: Resistance is measured between pins 3 and 4 on the back of the remote switch unit: Code:

Now were talkin!
Great info coming in guys. And thanks to e_lectro for all his input. I won't spend any time cleaning any of this up if there is an "officail" FAQ coming soon. We can just use this thread for reference til then. Any one know who manufactures the connectors for the harnesses for Honda? I have found Digi-Key to be a priceless resource for those types of parts. From connectors to flat ribbon cables, tact switches, you name it. |

Thanks for the great information, e_lectro. All of those charts will definitely come in handy.
Now that I look at the controls included on the steering wheel, as well as the resistance based input, I don't think I want to go that route. I don't think I will have enough control over the computer, plus I will need to be able to control those basic radio runctions when using the computer, anyway. However, I will continue to look into using the touch screen. Thanks again. |
