navi as computer monitor?

OK, since it looks like the navi would not be touch sreen compatible for a mouse, what about simply using it as the output for a PC? and use a touchpad for the mouse. and thoughts? thanks

I've been playing with that idea for a few weeks now... The navi uses an anlog RGBS signal, I've built "cables" that would connect my vga out to the navi screen and have even managed to stabalize the Vertical & Horizontal synch. However, I'm guessing the navi screen is using a 15Hz horizontal refresh and since the lowest put out by VGA is 31 or 37 you'd need something to divide the line, do work opposite of a line doubler. I've order a frequency converter the other day, so will see if simply changing the refresh frequencies would do the trick. I'll keep you posted.

If one is going to go through the trouble of connecting a pc to the screen, might as well try to connect it directly instead of using a PC 2 TV converter... + Using that TV input requires an AVCRGB1 which aren't exactly available

Yes I can hookup my laptop to my Navi since I have the RGB-1 and DVD player sh*t already in place. I have two aux inputs, one is connected to a camera and the other is currently free (can be hooked up to a computer).

Don't waste your time, doesn't look that good for laptop only. Only reason why I have it setup this way is if my DVD player dies, I can play DVDs off the laptop and still have movies on my Navi. The movies look good; IE and the desktop and Explorer and other W2K stuff doesn't look so good.

This can be done...you will need a converter that will go from the PC RGB to the Navi RGB...but it's not difficult to do. The AVC-RGB1 does something similar (composite-rgb) and uses a switch to change signals. You are discussing a similar process. Go look around at an electronics site for the converter.

The AVC-RGB1 has been discontinued, but you can try this:

Although discontinued...there are still some out there. But I wouldn't use it in this case b/c you'd go rgb->composite->rgb and lose quality.

Austin519 is right!

I tried hooking my pc up to a 7" widescreen lcd from my portable DVD player through the TV-out port and realized that you REALY want to try to go direct to RGBS. 1st of all, TV out formats the image to NTSC signal and the quality of that picture is pretty bad, especially on a small monitor. On top of that, if you use AVC-RGB1 or something along those lines, you'll have to convert that bad "image" to RGBS again, I'm sure w/ some loss of quality yet again. I still haven't tried using some "non-standard" resolutions like 320x240 or something in the 16:9 domain. Will let you know if that holds up...

Actually, I think it could be possible to use the touch screen as mouse input. I played with a Kenwood LCD some months ago. Almost all touchscreen LCDs use a 4 wire or 5 wire interface. If you put your scope on these wires and move your finger around the screen, you'll see that you could pretty easily figure out the X and Y location. I think the resolution would be OK, but you'll probably have to use a stylus to click on smaller icons.

Anyhow, you'd have to have a separate board with a couple of ADCs on it, and then have it stream the coordinate data via a serial port to the serial port on your PC.

Maybe SteveStMs knows which wires carry the touchscreen info? If so, I could probably be of help to you guys here. I'd also like to make my own version of the RGB1, but unfortunately, I have lots of research to do before I can successfully pull it off.
