mounting the amp?
yo. anybody know if its cool to mount the amp directly to the box? I got a 15 in a sealed box, and was thinking i could save hella space by just drilling the amp down to the box itself. anyone know? advice?

actually its not damaging to it at all.
The majority of car installation places will ask you where you want it mounted.
If you don't have a preference they will mount it to the box.

Almost all amps these days are solid state and are not affected by vibration from boxes. However, if you decide to mount on the box, make sure your screws aren't long enough to penetrate through to the inside of the box. Most boxes are constructed of 3/4" wood, so plan accordingly.

Because my amp was too big to mount to the sub box, it cost a small fortune in install.
If the amp can go on the box, that is the way to go. IMO

right on for the feedback. i did mount it to the box, and it looks a hell of a lot cleaner...a nice package dealy now. i just hope a hard bump or to much vibration will not damage the box where the screws were put in.

Ron (StreetEffectz) did the install. Here's some more pics of the install, including all the Cascade damping he did.
The rest of the pics are HERE

The issue isn't really the screws...or vibration, or anything like that. Most of the time you hear concern about mounting it to the box for heat dissipation reasons. If you mount the amp horizontally it usually doesn't get enough air current to cool. Mounting the amp vertically is better...but again depending on the load you drive it into, the size etc...it could be a problem. Mounting it to the box directly means there's no space between the box and the bottom of the amp...which depending on the amp could be bad because it retains heat in that interface and reflects it back into the amp...not a good thing. That's why you hear about the use of amp racks with push/pull fans to cool them. And again, depending upon the amp...it may be a good idea, if you mount the amp to the box...to maybe use a few rubber washers to give a small amount of breathing room between the box and amp. And definitely mount the amp vertically for the same reason you would otherwise, hot air rises and will create a (small) air current upward...while mounting it horizontally it has a much lesser effect.
Also, as was mentioned...definitely don't drill through and into the box...if you make a hole all the way through you could be looking at some air leaks later as those screws rattle around a little in the holes, and the box expands and contracts...
