More pictures of TL door deadening
Okay, I'm about to install my third set of speakers in about three months. (These will be DLS UR6 components).
This time I'm taking the time to soundproof the doors. I'm using Peel N Seal (PnS), a roofing product from Lowes. It's about 45 mils, rubberized asphault with aluminum on top. Costs about $1/square foot, and comes in 6" rolls at my local Lowe's.
I put two strips of PnS on the outer door skin (inside the door, of course!). Ironically, Acura has put a 4x8 inch piece of the exact same material there. Why they stopped with only such a small piece is a mystery to me--seems like if it was effective enough to do, they should have done it right.
I used a trowel to apply silicone rubber to the area behind the speaker. I'm hoping to cut down on the reflected waves back there. (I put this right on top of the PnS).
Then I started covering the inside of the door. The picture below was taken before it was finished, but I'll have more in the next few days.

I have that on all four doors of my TL and in the trunk and trunk lid. It does make a difference in road noise for me. And I like the way the doors thud now. At least I hope they still thud when I get it back in another week and a half. Man do I miss my TL.

I can't directly compare the two for sound quality, but I can tell you what this stuff is. It's 45 mils thick of rubberized ashphault, with aluminum foil on top. It's more than half the thickness of Dynamat Original--so two layers are thicker than D. Orig. It's also more pliable and shapeable than Dynamat. It costs about $1 per square foot--so if you double it up it's still less than one third the cost of Dyamat Extreme. I'm sure Dynamat is better, since it was designed specifically for this purpose--but who wants to spend hundreds of dollars to soundproof a car?
Also, I discovered that Acura actually puts a piece of this same stuff inside the door.

The sub fires forward toward the rear seat. The port comes out the side of the enclosure and does an S-shape up into the factory sub hole. I have pics at home. If you would like to see pics, send me an email. dconder@cox.net

I don't know about the weight of it though. I don't think its anything too heavy that will make your car noticably slower though.
