Kenwood KAC-X810D and Alpine Type R 12
Hey all, I got another question. I know I've rappin them off in the last couple days but I'm not going to lie I don't know shit about audio and electronics. I ordered a Alpine Type-R SWR-1222D a couple days ago and I have a Kenwood KAC-X810D amp. The sub can handle 1500w peak and 500 RMS. The amp is a 1600w. I just want to make sure it isn't going to blow the sub. Like I said I don't know shit about this kind of stuff, all I know is I love my music bumpin when I'm drivin my baby and I would hate to f my sub up because I did something retarded. Thanks again, you guys have helped me out far more than any shop I've gone to with questions.

in my opinion that amp is too powerful for the subwoofer. from what i read the rms power at 2 ohms is 800watts.
if you wire the sub for 4 ohms then you'd be ok but it depends on which version of the alpine type r you have. i think they make dual 2 ohm and dual 4 ohm type r subwoofers, find out which one you have.

what is the rms rating on the amp? the 1600w I'm pretty sure is peak power
even if the amp is a few hundred watts (100-200) higher in the rms department, it shouldn't be a problem, so long as you set your gains low and properly with zero equalization using the correct method.

Yea the 1600w is peak. And the type R is the 2 ohm model. I guess my best bet would be to take it somewhere and have a pro set it up for me. Knowing my luck I'd fry the sub befor I even got to use it.

is it dual 2ohm voice coils or just a single 2 ohm voice coil model? If it's a dual 2 ohmer, that might even be to your best benefit since wiring up the coils in series will result in it having a 4ohm load, and thus your amp will be putting out half its rated power.
If it's just a single 2 ohm voice coil, then wiring it up to your amp will result in your amp putting out its maximum rms and peak ratings. Either way, shouldn't be a big deal.
Nothing really to worry about, just before you power up your amp, turn the 'gain' setting on the amp down all the way, as well as all bass boost features down to off. Make sure your headunit has all equalizer settings set at 0. Then raise the volume on your headunit to about 3/4 of the way up, and slowly raise the 'gain' setting on the amp until your subwoofer starts exhibiting distortion. At that point, tweak the gain back down just a notch. That should be your 'sweet' spot.
Some people do it other ways, like for me...I don't really listen to my music loud, so I just raised my headunit volume to halfway and then adjusted the sub gain accordingly.
Good luck
