jl audio XR 6.5's - door install

has anyone tried to install JL Audio XR 6.5's in the doors of a 1stGen? The magnets on them are pretty burly, and I was just wondering if they were too deep for the doors, and if spacers were needed to get them to fit. Thanks.

I have 95 accord, we have basically the same car. you have to make O rings, takes about 10 more minutes if you know what your doing.

This isn't an apples to apples answer. I just did a replacement of the speakers on a 2nd gen. The factory fronts have a plastic spacer that would not work with the MB Quart 6.5's I was installing. SliverKnight advised using 3/4" MDF (meduim density fiberboard) to make new spacers (o-rings). It was 6 bucks at home depot for a sheet of MDF and a couple o' bucks for bolts and nuts etc. to secure the MDF spacers to the door panel. Also I had to drill new holes for the new hardware. Once mounted lower the window slowly to make sure it clears. It worked like a champ.

Again I do not know if this info is applicable to a 1st gen.

Thanks for the info. I actually decided to go with the VR 6" components, as they are supposed to be a better fit in japanese cars, than the 6.5's

i had jbl 6.5" components and they didnt fit. all i did was take out the plastic thing that u screw the speaker into and break off the back of it. then the magnet fits back in there and u can still use the original mounting bracket.

just took a hammer and broke the back right off
